Dr. Shane Simonsen is an author, plant breeder, bet-hedger, who left the academic world to start a zero-input agriculture farm that he writes about for his blog, zeroinputagriculture.wordpress.com. We talk peak oil, signs of impending collapse, the systems that will replace of globalism, breeding crops, how not everyone’s gonna be a farmer, and what it means to prepare for an uncertain future without falling prey to (too much) doomerism.

David de Hilster is the creator of the Dissident Science YT channel and president of the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society, and he's got a bone to pick with fundamental physics. Fields as the foundational organizing principle don't make any sense. In his view "push" is the only force that makes sense and is produced by four fundamental motions. We talk expanding earth, why Einstein was wrong, what makes great science, and what a new era of mechanistic physics might look like.

Bernardo Kastrup has a PhD in philosophy and another in computer science, and is interested in a theory of consciousness that by necessity emerges from quantum physics. Which, in short, suggests that reality isn't real. What we interact with is just a dashboard, a simulacrum of what's actually going on. We try to understand limits of what matters, try on alternative interpretations for quantum spookiness, and try to make sense of why the world looks and acts the way that it does.

Dr. Thomas Metzinger is a renowned philosopher and professor of theoretical philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. He also serves as a member of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence. Our eye-opening conversation with Dr. Metzinger explored a range of favorite topics all centered on the question: what does it mean to be a human in the post-modern landscape of for-profit healthscare, algorithmic decision-making, and endless war. We also discuss how the brightest future might result from the tiniest changes at the level of the individual, despite the self's inevitable recession into the increasingly totalitarian, yet inevitably unstable, global industrial-state machinery.

What happens when the FDA approves a drug that doesn't work? Say it gets accelerated approval from the regulatory body, but further clinical trials demonstrate a lack of efficacy. Normally, the agency requests that the company take their drug off the market, the company does so, and so the wheel turns. But when post-approval clinical trials showed that Genentech's blockbuster breast cancer drug Avastin was killing women, the company broke with more than a century of tradition, and declined to take their drug off the market. We talk with Miami University's Mikkael Sekeres about his experience sitting on the jury for the trial that denied Genentech's right to keep selling Avastin to breast cancer patients, regulatory capture, care for the dying, gamesmanship at the FDA and much, much more.

What happens when corrupt incentive structures and incorrect ecological assumptions crash into each other? A billion crabs vanish, and everyone blames it on the nebulous effects of a changing climate. Everyone, that is, except for Spencer Roberts - freelance journalist with bylines at the Intercept, Jacobin, Nautlius, and The New Republic. Roberts started looking into the hyperbolic headlines and discovered a predictable mess of corrupt incentive structures, questionable ecological practices, and a bottomless appetite for exploiting ever-deeper, colder waters. We talk greenwashing, corrupt incentives, government as corporation, nuclear power, and what to do about everything that's wrong.

Could the universe be shaped by consciousness, rather than the other way around? Most researchers working under the classical paradigm would say no - awareness is something that emerges from space time. But a new generation of cognitive neuroscientists, philosophers, and physicists has rebelled against the stalemate at the heart of consciousness research by asserting that clearly, obviously, inexorably... awareness must come first. This conversation with Dr. Jude Currivan, cosmological archaeologist with Masters in Physics from Oxford university, is our second attempt to understand how the physical world can spring from an abstraction. We talk about the mythmaking powers of science, the nature of reality, the holographic principle, and how it is not enough to consider things themselves - any robust theory of reality that attempts to understand awareness itself must explore the network itself.

Dr. David Carballo is back for another round with DemystifySci, this time all about the timeline of the peopling of the Americas. We talk about the timeline for human habitation of the Americas, where those people might have come from, and how it was that they came to organize themselves into villages, cities, and eventually empires. The first half of the conversation deals extensively with the early human history of the Americas, and the second half is all about the specifics of Teotihuacan - who built it, how did they do it, and how do we know?

Is it possible to view the future before it happens? A buttoned-up academy scientist would probably say no, but Julia Mossbridge, founding executive director of the Institute for Love and Time, would say yes. She comes from a line of scientists who have been willing to dive into the very edges of what can be studied with empirical science, and has come back from the front with stories to tell. We talk about the nature of science, the aggressive reactions in the establishment, how to train precognitive abilities, and much much more.

Is life inevitable? Or are we the unbelievable result of an against-all-odds game that has produced a pair of eyeballs capable of unravelling the mysteries of the universe? Nick Lane, Biochemist at the University College London, is torn. On the one hand, life seems like it has no choice but to occur. The biochemistry of metabolism is completely spontaneous, even in the absence of cells. But complexity? That's a whole different ballgame. We talk about why life on Earth is so strange, why a metabolic theory for life is so good, why Panspermia is so unsatisfying, and how some lab results imply our understanding of metabolism isn't as good as we think.

At the very bottom of all our attempts to explain nature there is a single question. Why is there anything at all? What are the forces that take an entire universe of undifferentiated matter and give it form? According to Ray Tomes of the Cycles Research Institute, the universe we occupy is shaped by the resonant pressure of cycles. The whole universe rings like a bell, with a fundamental frequency ringed by harmonic structures of decreasing intensity. In this model, the fundamental corresponds to the starting bell of the universe (big bang/big bounce/take your pick) and everything else - from galaxies to atoms - is the result of material being organized by the resultant harmonics. We get into the theory, explore implications for real life, and try to get some investment advice.

Fundamentally, this is a conversation about applied consciousness. We talk about the way that the "self" emerges from the resonant "structures" of the mind. These antennae decide the way that external stimuli are processed and integrated into experience, and so serve as the roots from which conscious experience springs. We talk about what happens when the antennae are tuned to a destructive resonance, the meditation industrial complex, the radical act of changing your mind, and much, much more.

These days, spring comes at strange times, winter barely arrives, and summer seems like it will never end. Conventional wisdom points to a single molecular cause - the rising tide of CO2 from increasing human activity. But that's an incomplete story, says Astrophysicist Nir Shaviv. It treats the Earth like it floats unmolested through the black night of the universe. But the full story is bigger, and weirder, and much more cosmic. We interview him about his cosmic ray theory of climate, cloud formation, and electricity.

Dr. Paul DeLespinasse is the innovator of a Periodic Table of Associations, which allows one to easily triage and understand the legitimacy of laws based on salient conserved features. His work was in part inspired by 20th century physicist Dewey Larson and our conversation centers around the new ways in which democracy can be more justly managed in an increasingly chaotic information landscape.

Dr. Karl Friston is the most widely-cited neuroscientist in the world, known for his development of parametric mapping, a method for comparing brain scans between different patients that basically enabled the whole field of functional neuroscience. To follow up his insights into the human brain, Dr. Friston has turned his mathematical mind to other questions of life and consciousness, such as the distinction between living and not-living, the simplest division imaginable between things, and the great challenge of encoding emotional states. We dig into what a soulful robot might look like, and the new class of myths that humans and robots are going to have to write together.

Science is the source of modern myths, and cosmology - the study of the cosmos and our place in them - is the foundation on which the house of science is built. But we know that these myths, about the location of the Earth in the universe, about the verdant surface of Mars, about the firmament above a flat earth studded with glowing orbs, about the formation of the solar system - all these myths can suddenly change. We sit down with Brian Keating to discuss the nature of mythmaking in science, the golden calf of prizes, the ego, the will to power, and the search for the fingerprints of inflation.

DemystifySci is a show of opposites, and in the court of Science it is vital that we present both sides of any debate. To balance our tendency to favor arguments that undermine consensus, we have a conversation with Dr. Ethan Siegel, blogger, professor, podcaster, and high priest of the big bang and inflation cosmology. This is a primer of the foundations of thought in mainstream physics, and so constitutes mandatory listening for those interested in finding a new way forward because, despite the ways in which we disagree, Siegel is right about one thing. New theories have an enormous burden of proof, and it's our responsibility to meet that bar.
