  • Live hardware set from Sydney-local Simon Mann...

Simon Mann has been playing and making electronic music for close to 20 years. Originally focussing on hip-hop and hip-house sounds of the 80's and 90's, Simon eventually gravitated toward house and techno after finding the joys of DJ-ing to a club crowd in the mid 90's.

Sighting early influences such as local heroes HMC, GT, Pocket, Head Affect and the rest of the Thunk Records crew, as well as international techno luminaries like Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Claude Young, Simon's taste has always been in the darker more underground sounds rather that upfront club tunes.

After taking 'runner up' position in Sydney's Radio Dex Bedroom Bangers competition in the early 2000's, the DJ-ing opportunities opened up considerably for Simon and he found himself playing alongside some of Sydney's most respected jocks including Phil Smart, Simon Caldwell, Ben Korbel, Ken Cloud, Ajax and Mark Murphy.

Simon's interest in production had always been in the background and a small studio of electronic instruments was developed over time. Most production work was done as part of the band We'd up until mid-2000 when Simon started to focus on solo productions with earnest.

Simon's sound has evolved into an exploration of deep house, techno and dub techno elements. Currently Simon performs live electronic sets using a combination of hardware and software to create his unique compositions.

The podcast recorded for DHA is a hardware set recorded live in one take. To create his sound Simon currently uses an Elektron Analog 4, Yamaha Cs6x and Rm1x, Roland TR606 and TR8, Korg Volca Bass and Sample, Pioneer EFX500. Signal processing and effects are carried out through Ableton Live Suite.

Simon releases music on Etui Records (Germany), Lobe Limbique Musique, East Point Sounds, Lamb Shanks Digital, Highjack Recordings (Ukraine) and Pinksilver Digital.

  • Mark Craven is spot on with podcast #113. A deep, minimal and techy mix, Mark builds the intensity throughout the 60 minutes, until dropping some acid flavours with Josh Wink’s “Talking To You”.

Mark is an Irish lad who ended up in Sydney and has an extremely solid DJ bio – having won the IDJ Raw Talent comp and also selected by DJ Mag as the Top pick Mix. Mark is also part of the extended Snowbombing family, a festival held in Austria (yes, Austria) each year.

  • Local DJ, Zeus joins us for episode #112 of the podcast...

Zeus is a well-respected, Sydney-based DJ, with a knack for a classic house sound, digging into his record collection for this mix with a range of tracks from the past 20 years or so.
Zeus run a party called ‘Compound Sydney’ at Goodgod Small Club and has been DJing for nearly three years now.

We asked Zeus about his mix and this is what he had to say:
“I recorded this mix in my living room on 2 Technic SL-1200 MK2 turntables and a Pioneer DJM700.

I tried to record this podcast for 5 weeks in a row and after recording about five different mixes and plenty of swearing, I was unhappy with all of them. So I simply took a break for a few days and hit record after my mind and ears had settled.
The whole idea behind this podcast is to go through records which are of particular significance to me – some I’ve heard out and experienced, some I’ve found through other DJs, some I've found through discogs, some I found in $2 bins at record stores and some I got by complete accident.”

We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

  • Doppel ~ Bassic Records ~ Canberra, Australia

    ~Doppel Bio~
Before being exposed for the first time to the allure of the limitless creative possibilities in the world of electronic music, Doppel grew up playing rock, metal and the blues, creating an appreciation for hypnotic rhythm and twisting melodies combined with the finer details and the spaces in between.
Now influenced in equal parts by the spacious and psychedelic textures of life in the Australian east coast and the surging sunset to sunrise sounds of global house and techno, he then turned his focus onto the studio, resulting in the Doppel project, a blend of styles; intricate and psychedelic with a focus on deep grooves and luscious soundscapes. A member of the house and techno collective Lotown based in Canberra, he has also just released his debut EP "Blacklight" on Australian techno label, Bassic Records. Recently Doppel has performed live at festivals such as Dragon Dreaming, Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Soliton Drop and Just Chillin’ as well as supporting acts such as Shigeto, Nosaj Thing, Jamie Stevens and Cassian at clubs and outdoor parties around Canberra, Melbourne and the East Coast.

    ~EP Description~
Blacklight EP - Released on Bassic Records - 18.11.2014
Free Download or Donation at Bassic Records Bandcamp
    bassicrecords.bandcamp.com/album/blacklight-ep

Doppel's debut EP, "Blacklight" displays an array of energy driven basslines, tech house percussion and organic soundscapes, together forming the Doppel sound. The seamless flow mirrors that of the movement of our natural surroundings, a dream state formed from angelic melody and swamping synthesizers. Uplifting atmosphere is felt all the way through, the murmuration of vocals keep the mind connected to the hinted nuance of endless connectivity.

Doppel's unique bush techno and house sound is represented perfectly in each original, the stripped back sound creating focus on the symbolized emotion of each note. Ken Zo's remix plugs in the progressive energy with an earth rumbling bassline and savvy technical groove. The EP finishes with Matt Dwellers take on Blacklight, the influence of Australian and French techno clear from his deep, emotive direction and limitless build ups with subtle synthetic tones.

Dave has been working hard over the past couple of years on a weekly night here in Sydney called La Famiglia, which has recently, as of about two weekends ago, rebranded itself as ‘Something Else’. Something Else celebrated its launch on 25th October with Red Rack’em at the helm, with support from local legends Simon Caldwell & Magda Bytnerowicz. Back to Dave… Along with running a weekly party and DJ-ing at that party, Dave has regularly travelled to Europe taking his unique brand of techno, dub techno and deep techno across the world. For more details, check out our event on Facebook:
    www.facebook.com/events/812919138739134/

As we did last year, we've just completed a DJ competition for one young DJ to open our room at Code!

The winning mix was by a young man who goes by the DJ name "Slüge", pronounced slug. His real name is Dylan Leicester!

Read a little more about Dylan below...

“Hey, my name is Dylan Leicester, I’m 21 years old and I’m originally from the Central Coast, north of Sydney, but I’m now based in Sydney. Some of my favourite favourite artists and labels include: Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Cajual Records, Local Talk Records, Kolour Recordings and Hot Creations. I first thought about being a DJ when my roommate entered a competition himself, and then bought a set of decks and showed me a few things he had learnt. This made me determined to be able to put together a mix of my favourite songs. I’ve been dj-ing for about a year now and have since played a couple of gigs at around Sydney such as The Burdekin Hotel, World Bar and Kit & Kaboodle. Check me out on Soundcloud – @dylan130992 and Facebook -www.facebook.com/Sluge1992

  • We head interstate for episode #103 of the DHA Podcast, and call on Brisbane’s Rikki Newton to show us the way. Known for his impeccable taste in house and techno, Rikki has been a stalwart of the Brisbane underground music scene for the better part of a decade.

Rikki is one half of Subtrakt Events alongside good friend Adam Swain, which was established in 2007, and has been host to international talents Dixon, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Steve Bug, Prosumer, Smallpeople, Moomin, Oskar Offermann, Jus-Ed, Tornado Wallace, Move D and Fred P.

With an edgy music policy and creativity first approach, it will be a breath of fresh air to audiences looking to break from run of the mill festival line-ups.

If you were wondering what the definition of deep house is, simply have a listen to this mix. It is one of the most perfect selections of deep house we have heard in quite some time. With a distinct NYC feel to it, Rikki features tracks from some of the great producers and labels for house and techno, including Fred P, Patrice Scott, Amir Alexander & Steven Tang. We were also extremely excited to hear the inclusion of Naoki Shinohara – Dimension, released on Soul People Music in May 2014.

  • James Petrou, Sydney-local and head of Trojan House Records, is a self-taught DJ and producer. James has been a regular on the local-scene for some time now, most notably receiving the respectful honour of becoming a resident DJ at La Famiglia at our beloved Burdekin Hotel recently.

James is also well known for being one half of ‘Jaded & James’, production and DJ duo, who shot to fame with their release in 2012, ‘Toni's Pain EP’ released on Beef Records.

It was in 2013, that James took his love for music to the next level, by establishing Trojan House Records. Not only is it an outlet for his own production skills, but to showcase other up and coming Aussie talent. Artists such as Dan Baartz & Cameron Cooper have been supported by the likes of international superstars such as Richie Hawtin, Maya Jane Coles & Joyce Muniz.

James takes this mix pretty deep with some seriously chugging bass lines. Overall a beautiful deep tech flavour, perfect for his new home at The Burdekin Hotel.

  • Rachel May (bit.ly/RachelMay-FB) is the deep and techy alter ego of Minx: bit.ly/Minx-SC, who is a well Sydney DJ/producer signed to EMI Records. Needless to say, this young lady has been on a whirlwind tour of the world over the past few years since signing to EMI. She's travelled to Ibiza, where she has played at a little club called Pacha, London, and Los Angeles, where she played at the Grammy Awards after party.

Minx has also turned her hand to production, with her latest single 'Heaven' released on EMI Records: bit.ly/Heaven-iTunes, featuring Chris Arnott on vocals and a remix from Motez.

But Minx's big room sounds are miles apart from what you'll here from Rachel May today. Rachel keeps this mix pretty tight, with nice deep rolling basslines, a hint of acid, a slice of tech... but mostly house, with a side of classic vocals, just how we like it.

    Have a listen...

  • We're excited to be celebrating our 100th podcast today, with the one and only Magda Bytnerowicz!

Magda is, without a doubt, one of Sydney's finest DJs. She runs an extremely successful event series, 4our (pronounced "four") alongside musical partner Trinity, which showcases local and international talent in intimate warehouse spaces. Over the past couple of years 4our have delivered the likes of Steffi, Eric Cloutier, Eli Verveine, XDB & Mareena, to Sydney-siders.

The quote from Magda's official bio reads: "Expect a diverse selection of old house and new techno (and vice versa) as well as a smattering of disco in her DJ sets, keeping you locked to the dance floor".... and she has not let us down with this mix.

Magda kicks things off with some beautiful deep house sounds, including one of our all time favourite OB Ignitt tracks. The mix slowly builds without notice, until you find yourself on a virtual dancefloor appreciating the subtle acid and techno flavours. Before she's done though, Magda closes out with with some disco, as piano keys and guitar licks sweep over you like a rush of emotion. A true musical journey, in every sense of the word.

We urge you to stick your headphones on and find a quiet space in a darkened room to appreciate Magda Bytnerowicz...

  • For the first time on the radio show, our three trusty residents, Venda, DJ Jim Poe, and Swampy were responsible for the music programming this fine Sydney evening. On Tuesday 8th July, 2014, the DHA crew gathered in the Bondi Beach Radio studios and made magic happen.

Venda played an all vinyl set, and it was the perfect lead-into Jim Poe and Swampy. Venda's was deep, a little stripped back and very raw house. Jim threw down what we've all come to know as his brand of NYC or Chicago-feeling deep house, to somewhat tech house at times, but that's a conversation for another time! Swampy finished off the last 40 minutes with what some might call techno, others, well they might call it tech house. We won't dwell on genre's here... Just enjoy the #*&^ing music.

    0:00-0:40 Venda
    0:40-1:20 DJ Jim Poe
    1:20-2:00 Swampy

  • Sydney duo Set Mo have been working the local scene as DJs until turning their hand at production. After a couple of teaser releases in 2013, Sydney-based etcetc Music have snapped up the pair and signed them to their label, with plans for their debut EP to drop next month, August 2014.

When we asked them about their mix for the DHA Podcast, this is what they had to say:
"This time of year is awesome for all DJs regardless of musical taste. All the dance labels and artists are putting out their biggest tunes for the northern hemisphere's summer season. There's so much great music coming out at the moment we felt compelled to put together a mix of the stuff we're digging. The mix starts off quite funky with some disco, grooving house and even a brazilian joint. Around the halfway marks it steps up a notch and moves into some more clubby stuff. This mix is a good representation of the style we play out. There's also a couple of our most recent remixes in there to give you an idea of the music we produce."

Set Mo also have a fortnightly radio show on Bondi Beach Radio, Tuesdays 10pm Sydney-time.

    Enjoy the music...

  • Our next guest is fellow Bondi Beach Radio presenter Seher (@seher).

When we spoke to Seher and asked her what the inspiration for her mix was, this is what she had to say:

"I’m a big fan of OFF Recordings and you will notice many tracks and remixes by Andre Crom in this mix, along with some remixes by Nice7, Sonny Fodera and Larse. This mix is more on the upbeat and bouncy side of deep house. The last two tracks, ‘So Long’ and ‘Time to Get Physical’ were treasures when they came out, so when I heard the recent remixes I knew I wanted to include them because their ass-shaking effect. "

We think she should have her own brand of house music named after her - Seher House! We love the bassy, upvibe, vocal and dancy tunes she's selected for us. It gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling!

Check it out and let us know what you think in the comments...
