  • Parenting after loss is a journey. It's important to make space for conflicting emotions. Don't put pressure on yourself to feel that having another baby will resolve or put an end to the pain of a previous loss. It's okay to feel happiness and sadness at the same time. Life may be moving on, but this doesn't mean you have to let go of a previous loss.

In today's episode Helena Morais shares her stillbirth story and pregnancy after loss journey and inspiration for Malia's present. She lost her daughter Malia due to preclamsia leading to a placenta abruption. She grieved and tried again and was blessed with her son Arinze. She shares her journey to healing through her sprituality and developing gifts in honor of her daughter Malia.

  • Below are some coping tips that worked for me on how to Handle the Anxiety, Fear and Stress that comes with Pregnancy After Loss.

Focus on one day at a time. Easier said than done, right? But I always keep my favorite verse with me that "All things work together for the good of those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 If God has called you to be a mother especially for you to have another child it will happen, it is his purpose for your life. I learned to take my pregnancy one day at a time because I celebrated what was good, different, and better about my new pregnancy. I paid attention to what's going well each day and how I was feeling and how the baby was moving and healthy. Remember each pregnancy is different, and the fact that you miscarried, had an infant loss or stillbirth does not mean this pregnancy will end that way.

Don't always expect to be happy and joyful all the time - We all have good and bad days when we are not pregnant so don't expect it to be joyful and happy all the time. Remind yourself that being pregnant again can be a scary experience.

    Pray

    Journal

    Celebrate Milestones

    Take Care of Yourself

Seek a Therapist, Coach, or Grief Counselor

  • Are you ready to try to conceive?

Today's episode is a solo episode by Founder Erica Michelle on Trying Again and Making the Decision to try to conceive.

Making the decision to try again is not an easy one. This decision may trigger many different emotions and bring on anxiety, fear, guilt, inadequacy, hopelessness, and a sense of failure. In this series I plan to equip you with the questions to ask yourself and your partner to prepare your mind, body, and inner self for another pregnancy.

Below are 3 questions you should ask yourself before you and your partner make the decision to begin to actively try to conceive after your loss.

Emotional Stability - Are you emotionally ready for another pregnancy?

Working through your grief - Have you taken time to grieve about the death of your baby?

Cautious Excitement - Are you mentally prepared for the challenges of a subsequent pregnancy?

  • Pregnancy loss and infertility can be so hard on a marriage. It can either tear the couple apart or bring them closer together. In fact it is said that almost 80% of couples who experience a miscarriage or infertility end up in divorce. In this month of love we will be featuring 4 couples showing by prayer, faith in God, and a strong commitment to stay together their marriages endured the hard times of pregnancy loss and infertility. This is the last couple in our series The Martin’s. They are fellow podcasters and have created Chasing Rainbows podcast documenting their infertility journey. In this episode they take us back to the beginning of their journey to parenthood, battling infertility with a PCOS diagnosis, how they grieved their son Noah they loss at 20 weeks, and how Starbucks is helping fund their IVF journey.

WE ARE THE MARTINS!! Being from two different states, Jason (MS) and I (KY) met in college and have been married for more than 14 plus years and sexually active for 16 years (I know!). Although we practiced safe sex, during college, we never became pregnant. I started noticing some changes with my body, saw my gynecologist and was diagnosed with PCOS. We figured we would take meds, enjoy each other, and worry about babies later. Little did we know, later would be 8-10 years down the road. With our first miraculous pregnancy, we experienced a second-trimester pregnancy loss with no known medical reason. It would take several years later for us to conceive with some medical assistance which all ended in miscarriages. Pregnancy losses are difficult but we are still standing!

  • Today's episode is a solo episode where I discuss what has been going on with Sisters in Loss behind the scenes and all about our grief support groups. In 2022, Sisters in Loss partnered with Postpartum Support International to host a bi-weekly grief support group for Black mothers who have experienced pregnancy loss, infant loss, stillbirth, miscarriage, child loss, and infertiilty. Our group named Black Moms in Loss falls under the support groups that PSI offers at postpartum.net. This group is peer led by Sisters in Loss doulas and other grief support workers. In 2023, we moved to weekly grief support groups through Black Moms in Loss and our weekly grief support group meets at 8pm EST every Thursday.

In this episode, I discuss why grief support groups are supplemental to therapy and other healing modalities, why you should join our weekly support group, how to join, and how to continue to support Sisters in Loss.

  • You are listening to a special episode of the Sisters in Loss Podcast. As many of my US listeners know next Tuesday, November 7, 2023 is Election Day and Midterm elections, and we have the power to change and shift the paradigm of maternal and infant mortality in America with our vote. In today’s episode I sit down with March of Dimes President Stacey D. Stewart to discuss their Blanket Change Campaign launched on October 10, 2017, and why our vote matters in this election, why the maternal death rate is getting worse as technology advances, and how working together with March of Dimes gives all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies.

Stacey D. Stewart joined March of Dimes as its fifth President on January 1, 2017, and first African American President. In this role, Stewart heads the organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies. She is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s strategy, vision and operations. She has moved on from this role but her impact still lives on to saving the lives of Black moms and babies.

The maternal death rate in America has doubled in just twenty five years, and it’s only getting worse. More than 700 moms died due to pregnancy-related causes this year alone, making the United States the most dangerous developed nation to have a newborn baby. Women of color are most at risk of facing life-threatening complications, and black women are three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes.

  • Today's episode is about deciding not to terminate for medical reasons. Many parents are faced with this decision once finding out their babies have abnormalities that will not give them the best quality of life. Today's guest Maria Okehie decided to keep her baby boy after being told he had a stroke in utero and had severe brain damage that he wouldn't make it through labor and delivery. Maria's son was born via c-section and he passed away less than two weeks after he was born.

In this episode, we discuss her first two pregnancies, this infant loss and why she carried her son to tern, his memorial, and having more children after her loss.
