We’re finally talking about it! With an increasing number of fashion & lifestyle influencers claiming to be “Sustainability Influencers”, are they becoming a threat to the growing movement? How are the terms Influencer & Advocate different? Or are they the same⁉️ Do we need to put in place certain checks & balances to see if your favourite influencer is truly sustainable or is just riding the wave to trend?
All this and more with my guests and speakers for this episode; Devyani Kapoor, Sustainable Fashion Advocate & Founder Shuffling Suitcases, and Mrudula Joshi, Zerowaste Advocate & Founder Ullisu. Both Devyani & Mrudula started off as sustainability advocates sharing their journeys of conscious living and are now running marketplaces to help their audiences switch to responsible consumerism. 🌍

India Ranks 7th in Global Climate Risk Index 2021 published by the Bonn-based environmental think tank Germanwatch. According to the Index, floods caused by heavy rain in 2019 took 1,800 lives across 14 states in India and displaced 1.8 million people. Overall, the intense monsoon season affected 11.8 million people, with the economic damage estimated to be $10 billion.
India is also home to 21 of the world’s 30 most polluted cities, with 122 non-attainment cities exceeding national ambient air quality standards. Besides affecting the health of the citizens, air pollution also impacts agriculture, climate, buildings, and aesthetics, in terms of visibility.
CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL AND IT IS HAPPENING AS WE SPEAK.
My guest on this episode is Aakash Ranison, Climate Activist, Sustainability Advocate, Author and we are discussing his journey and his book ‘Climate Change Explained’ where he simplifies overwhelming concepts like GHGs, Carbon footprint, Carbon Offsetting, and solutions to fight climate change through a strong visual language. In our conversation, we help you decode carbon footprint & how to go about creating a balance in everything you do, alongside other things.

The more I read about how humans are polluting the planet the more I feel upset & even livid at times! The mass ignorance towards your impact on your surroundings or even the voluntary neglect & resistance to changing certain lifestyle habits drives me crazy to a point of legit nego vibes! The one solution that helped me strike a balance between this negative rub-off of people’s behaviour and some incredible work happening around the world in sustainability, was forming a habit of reading POSITIVE ECO-NEWS!
While the larger percentage of the population couldn’t care less, there are a bunch of changemakers who are pushing the needle in the right direction, and reading about their dedication & innovations helps me stay on track, makes me continue doing my bit, and overall keeps motivated & aspired to do more and also help people around me do the same.
Am I borderline banking on the ‘Laws of Attraction’ for sustainable development?
Anyway! Since this is working for me, I’ve decided to extend this routine to you, where I present an Eco-News roundup every Tuesday on this very podcast, with the hope that it inspires you to take action.🌳 Look out for Tuesdays on Ethically Yours - A Podcast to Simplify Sustainability by Darshana Gajare.

Why would you listen to me.. If you don’t know me!
I’m your host Darshana and this is an almost unscripted effort to help you get to know me a little better, so you can bear me talk on this podcast!
While a lot of this episode has ended up sounding like an audio resume, here’s some bonus trivia on me:
I’m a huge procrastinator,
I make massive life goals which become unrealistic due to the above,
I truly feel we must all come together to fix this planet ‘cos there really isn’t a planet B… no matter how many films Hollywood makes on it!
I’m a dog person and can shake a leg to the cringiest Bollywood music!
If I wasn’t doing what I do, I would probably be a dancer or performing artist.
Now do me a favour, and tell me what you’d like to learn about Sustainability!

A report stated that on an average, music festivals generate 23,500 tonnes of waste, including plastic bottles, food containers, food waste, clothing and abandoned tents. A lot of us feel that only upto 20% of this waste could be recycled or diverted from going into landfills. Would you believe me if I said that my guest Divya & her team have successfully diverted upto 99% of waste from ending up in landfills from events of similar scale? If not, this episode is for you.
While individuals are striving to make their homes zero-waste starting by doing a waste audit and then finding suitable replacements for the disposables, large events and offices can replicate this model and achieve similar results. The mixed waste rotting in landfills are a huge contributor to the rising temperatures, and the simplest and most effective solution lies within each of us.

A social enterprise or social business is a business that has specific social objectives that serve its primary purpose. Social enterprises seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. Their profits are invested back into their social programs.
In this episode, my guest Kirti Poonia, who heads Okhai, takes us through the ins and outs of running a social enterprise. While we all generally assume for a non-profit organisation to be laid back and to produce sub-standard products under the name of charity, Kirti is determined for Okhai to have high productivity internally, high expectations externally and very very high delivery to the customers.
By identifying the inherent skills of the women in Gujrat and developing the ‘milk route’ that enables them to make a living respectfully by working from home, Okhai has managed to replicate this model in almost all states of India to foster craft and artisan empowerment.
Today, Okhai has helped improve the economic conditions of around 3200 people directly, and aims to be a lakh strong in the next 5 years.
Don’t miss this episode as this is probably the only business in fashion that has not only managed to survive but also grow in this global unrest caused by the pandemic.

Behind every beautiful product or service, is an army of people working tirelessly to bring you the best. When you think about fashion or Sustainable Fashion you instantly tend of think about a designer as the sole person behind it. It’s time we realised that this movement is going to need more than designers in order to make a bigger impact. We’re going to need innovators, engineers, researchers, coders, curators, policy makers, government officials, and so many more to come together, collaborate and catalyse a real shift.
Join Karan Kumar, Tanushri Shukla & myself as we discuss ‘What it Means to have a Career in Sustainable Fashion.’
Karan works as a Program Officer, Materials at the Laudes Foundation and is an active volunteer at the Global Shapers Community’s Mumbai Hub. Tanushri leads Community and various other initiatives at Intellecap’s Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF) and also runs her own social enterprise - Chindi; while I lead Sustainability at IMG Reliance including Lakmé Fashion Week and various other initiatives alongside running Fairtrunk & this Podcast.
P.S: This episode is the audio extract of one of our usual conversations about sustainable fashion but just live on Zoom for Global Shapers Mumbai's "Shaping Fashion" dialogue during Fashion Revolution Week. We often have a laugh about how we work in sustainable fashion but aren't designers, so we thought we'd talk about how that's possible and in fact necessary for the industry to move towards circularity.
About Global Shapers Mumbai:
Born out of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of young people driving dialogue, action and change. The Mumbai Hub comprises a diverse group of energetic and exceptional young "Mumbaikars" each sharing a passion to be a positive change in this world. From scaling Everest to growing organic gardens, from venture capital to civil service, from leading entrepreneurs to the best design thinkers, our Shapers represent the energetic youth of our country and are together helping to drive change in the local community. The greatest strength of the Hub is our ability to curate and convene the best minds in the city, bringing together thought leaders and influencers to regularly debate and discuss key issues that our city and community faces.

I had the privilege of stealing some time from Bandana Tewari, lifestyle editor, sustainability activist and formerly the editor-at-large as well as the fashion features director of Vogue India. In this episode we talk about possible shifts in consumerism given the global slowdown on account of the COVID 19 outbreak.
While recent news reported that a luxury brand store hauled in over $2.5 million worth sales in a day from a single store in China, right after the store reopened post-coronavirus; We are optimistic and hopeful that this was just a spike resulted from all the angst caused to people by staying at home, and that there will be a greater sense of responsibility in the months and years to come.
Listen until the end, I promise there's stuff that will move you and realign your understanding of life!
Comments & Feedback are most welcome.
Cheers,
Darshana

Sustainability - a word with increasing number of google searches.
A word that is so vast, multi faceted, overwhelming and so unclear that it leaves you thinking….
What's this fuss around sustainability?
Why is the whole world suddenly acting so eco friendly?
Why am I segregating my waste? What's this deal with composting my garbage.. Eww!
What’s so bad about takeout food?
What is Fashion Revolution? And why are they behind my favourite fast fashion brands?
Why are people cleaning beaches?
Wait, polyester is essentially plastic?
Are you telling me dry cleaning is leading to water pollution?
Wait, child labour still exists?
Whooaa… how is my beef increasing the carbon emissions bro?
Why is everyone turning vegan?
What! Second hand clothing is a thing now?
There’s just too much happening dude, how are my actions even going to make a difference!
My name is Darshana and this is Ethically Yours, a Podcast to Simplify Sustainability. Join me while I try to answer all those questions and many more. And guess what, Sustainability is not about 100 people doing it perfectly, it’s about millions of us doing it imperfectly.
