  • ré·su·mĂ© [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey]noun1. a summing up; summary.2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job.

In Comic Reader RĂ©sumĂ©, I use Mike’s Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We’ll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It’s part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part.
This episode includes Elvira's House of Mystery #6, Fantastic Four #293, G.I. Joe a Real American Hero #50, Marvel Age #41, Marvel Saga: the Official History of the Marvel Universe #9, Masters of the Universe #3, Son of Ambush Bug #2-3, Spectacular Spider-Man #117, The Mighty Thor #370, Uncanny X-Men #208, Web of Spider-Man #18, West Coast Avengers #12, X-Factor #7, and more!

  • Julia Raul returns to join Diabolu Frank for the finale of our JLMay 2023 / Milestone Media trilogy of episodes. Since the previous shows tended toward paired character spotlights, we have to take a kitchen sink approach now, looking at the first year-plus of the series Blood Syndicate & Icon and the earliest Shadow Cabinet, including its launch event "Shadow War." We also return to Hardware and Static through to the intracompany event "Worlds Collide," restoring our theme and mandate by mingling in with DC's Superman Family of titles (well, the creative teams that aren't afraid to drive through the dark side of town, anyway.) Along the way, we talk Vixen, Black Canary, Green Lantern John Stewart, Steel, and more. In case you missed it, these episodes have covered every story from the trade paperback The Brave and the Bold: Milestone, which means it's time to visit the early issues of Xombi, including David Kim's team-up with the Crispus Allen incarnation of The Spectre from The Brave and the Bold #25 in the story "Annihilating Angel" by John Rozum & Scott Hampton.
JLMay 2023 will cover the third volume of DC Comics' The Brave and the Bold (2007-2010), which ran 35 issues. There's only 31 days in the month, so we'll run a list of all the issues with links to the podcasts intent on covering them until the actual shows turn up, individual or in groups...

Julia Raul joins Diabolu Frank for an exhaustive discussion of Jefferson Pierce, A.K.A. Black Lightning, with an emphasis on his 1995 solo series (collected as Brick City Blues) and live action television show of 2018-21. Then they move on to Virgil Hawkins, of the 1993 Milestone Comics series Static (with a brisk overview of its first year) and the 2000-2004 animated show Static Shock. Finally, the two heroes team-up for 2009's "Last Time I Saw Paris" by Matt Wayne & Howard Porter from The Brave and the Bold #24.
