  • I used to have insomnia.

    When I first moved to Adelaide (from Kangaroo Island), the fast paced and noisy big smoke put me in a state of frazzle. I'd tried every trick and herb in the book, but I still wouldn't go to sleep until I was utterly exhausted.

    When I started studying, I put this and many of my other symptoms down to 'adrenal stress' and then I was convinced I developed a state of 'adrenal fatigue'. Well that's what testing showed too.

    But the functional medicine community was missing parts of the puzzle when it came to stress and the adrenal glands and how this impacts your health.

    & yes, this stress response I'm talking about governs the health of your energy, moods, skin, sleep, cycles, weight & more.

    We now know the 'adrenal stress' and 'adrenal fatigue' concept are actually a misrepresentation of what is really happening with your hormone production, in response to stress.

  • While there are different forms of schooling from one school or home to the next, I believe there are some foundations to support your little loves learning experience.

    Today I’ll share what I’m doing with our daughter who’s just started reception, to help with her transition into school, to nourish her body for growth and development, plus fuelling her brain for concentration and learning.

  • The presents are unwrapped, Christmas feast (and leftovers) have been devoured and the year is coming to an end.

    It’s that strange time between Christmas and New Year where you lose track of what day it is and you're given a chance to take a breather, before the new year approaches.

    I find it a nice time to look back on the year, reflect on the highs and lows to gain clarity on what didn't serve me & manifest more of what I do want to feel and experience in the new year.

  • Breastfeeding experiences for one Mumma can be completely different from another. It can also be an emotional roller coaster, especially when mixed with broken Mumma sleep.

    There can be frustration, pain, exhaustion, overwhelm, heartbreak, but also an abundance of love & oxytoxin experienced throughout a mothers breastfeeding journey. Geez, some days you may experience all of the above!

    When it comes to nursing, like all areas of motherhood there are different techniques, challenges... and even more opinions.

    Gaining support from a qualified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is something I will always recommend, but I have to admit I also personally adore listening to the experience of other Mums. I take what resonates and go with my gut.

    Common breastfeeding challenges amongst Mums include supply issues (over and under) and many will experience some degree of mastitis. So when guidelines change, as they have recently with the way the Academy Of Breastfeeding view and treat mastitis, I like to explore the why behind it.

    Hence inviting one of my fav lactation consultants back for a chat- Hannah Willsmore. Hannah joins me for episode 98 of the Glowing Mumma Thriving Bubba podcast.

  • When it comes to taking health into my own hands, preventative health is what I strive for.

    Nourishing my body & mind with foods, & natures medicine, but also feed my soul with activities I love (even if my girls are right there with me).

    Sure there’s times when we go down with acute symptoms, but I feel confident knowing we have a natural medicine wellness toolkit on hand to support us through it. Of course, if needed, medications & emergency health care are there for us.

  • I was ironically pressing send on this post, explaining about how we'd lead a healthy lifestyle while on our most recent trip to far North Queensland. That's when it started to creep over me. The headache started pulsing behind my left eye, my body began to ache and my bed was calling me louder and louder. Despite the warmth under the blankets, my teeth were also chattering loudly. I was down and out.

    It took me a couple of days of being bed bound before I mustered up the strength to clear my mind and work out a plan of attack with my herbs, nutrients, probiotics and oils on hand. Whether it's you or your little loves suffering with a sickness, when you're in the midst of it all, its no easy task trying to strategise a medicine routine.

    So that's why I wanted to open up a conversation about important topics when it comes to children's health- croup, ear infections and avoiding antibiotics. So you can be equipped with your actions steps ready to go for when the next acute family health challenge comes knocking.

    I thought it would be a helpful time to invite back, Childrens Health Naturopath Ashlee Yates to have the discussion with me.

    Ashlee Yates is a degree qualified Children's Health Naturopath supporting children and families through upset tummies, coughs and colds, itchy skin, sleeping issues and everything in between.

    As a result of her own experiences as a mum, her clinical focus has developed with a strong interest in the health of children and their families.
