  • What is "Pigment Weight"?

The concept of "Pigment Weight" is often a source of confusion and has been frequently asked about without attaining proper clarity. Having taught about Pigment Weight for the past 5 years, and having it as a fundamental aspect of my education throughout the past 40 years, I can provide some insights to bring clarity to this topic.

To begin, it is important to understand that Pigment Weight is a visual metric, rather than a physical one. This is the case for all of the metrics employed in hair color theory - they are visual in nature and not physical measurements.

    Surprising, isn't it?

If you find yourself asking, "Why should I know this?" or "Why is it important?", then you definitely need to listen to this episode. And if your curiosity isn't satisfied, you should check out the extended version of this podcast available on Spotify with a Premium Subscription.

By grasping and applying this valuable concept, you will empower yourself and enhance your ability to achieve successful hair color results in your salon business.

So, go ahead and hit that play button. In just 24 minutes, you'll understand why this information is essential for everyone to learn.

    Enjoy the listening experience!

  • Let's delve into the intriguing history of hair color.

I absolutely adore our profession! There's nothing else quite like it, where we can express our artistic talents on a canvas that is with our clients day in and day out.

Our profession is not just about creating visually stunning masterpieces. We also have the incredible privilege of being there for our clients in times of difficulty, as a source of motivation, a listening ear when they're stressed, and a guide when we help them enhance their best features.

It's a multifaceted relationship that often lasts for years. We have the power to not only make our clients look better but also to make them feel better. We all know the saying, "When you look great, you feel great."

However, this also means that we must constantly educate ourselves to ensure that we execute our skills with the utmost precision and quality.

"The 'rub' often comes when we encounter an alternative version of a story, rather than the true facts. Many individuals tend to add their own spin to the essential principles necessary for achieving success.

Throughout this series, we aim to distinguish between opinions and principles. Let's start by revisiting the very beginning!

Join us as we take you on a journey through time and present the complete history, instead of an edited version, of the elements in hair color. By understanding the true meaning behind these elements, you'll gain more clarity and knowledge to pave your way towards a successful career.

So, press play... and after 35 minutes and 7 seconds, you'll have a clear pathway ahead of you.

    Enjoy listening!"

  • Did you enjoy Episode 1?

Did you walk away with any discoveries?

    I'm certain you did!

And now, here's our exciting 2nd episode featuring Jez Barnett.

  • Paradigm:

In the context of science and philosophy, a paradigm refers to a specific collection of concepts and thought patterns, encompassing theories, research methods, postulates, and criteria for identifying valid contributions within a particular field. Derived from the Greek word meaning "pattern," the term paradigm is employed to demonstrate similar patterns of occurrences.

In this episode, I am thrilled to have Jez Barnett, my colleague and friend, join me as a guest. Jez is the innovator and founder of Innolux products based in the U.K.

You might be wondering why I would invite a product manufacturer as a guest, considering that my company is "non-branded".

It's actually quite simple. One of my greatest epiphanies occurred when I realized how much your paradigm influences your belief systems and shapes your viewpoints.

Believe it or not, Jez and I actually agree on a lot more than we may have differing opinions about. It is because of our common ground that

I believe you will find his contribution beneficial and enlightening.

In this two-part episode, we will cover many subjects and I am confident that you will discover some valuable insights that can help you on your path to success.

I assure you that Jez is warm, inviting, engaging, and a wealth of knowledge.

So, press play and let's begin part 1!

  • A testimonial from a student about our Hair Color School!

When it comes to promoting our educational programs, it's often easy to underestimate the importance of how effective they are, because we've personally been involved in creating them, and naturally, we believe in their efficacy and the value of their content.

However, no matter how much effort and hard work we put into developing these programs, the true measure of their success lies in whether or not the information is effectively transferred to the students and if they find it genuinely helpful.

In this special episode, we have a guest who happens to be one of our colleagues. She attended our first flagship program, Hair Color School, and is currently enrolled in our second flagship program, Hair Color University.

This provides a unique opportunity for you to hear directly from a student and learn about her impressions and experiences.

So go ahead, press play, and in just 20 minutes, you too might find yourself compelled to experience this remarkable program for yourself.

  • Have you ever heard someone use the phrase, "I wish I could be a fly on the wall during that meeting"?

We've all had those moments when we wish we could record some of the crazy nonsense that we hear. In this episode, Max and I discuss a recent adventure in a meeting that brings us back to the familiar subject of protein. We all use "protein" in our everyday vocabulary, but many in our profession still don't fully understand it.

A friend of mine described it this way: it's like a driver's license. Just because you pass a test and get your driver's license doesn't mean you're a great driver. It means you have enough knowledge to keep you out of too many crashes.

Just knowing is not enough. As hairdressers, we have to seek a deeper understanding of the medium we work with: the chemicals we apply and the tools we use. It's through continuous discovery that we can truly master our craft.

Why not take 30 minutes and 7 seconds to listen and see if you make any new discoveries?

    Enjoy the listen!

  • Life Before Demi-Permanent Hair Color

I am constantly amazed by the number of times we need to revisit this information, which I believe is due to the indoctrination of the marketing story surrounding this product.

Since its introduction in 1988, when "Demi-Permanent" became part of the hairdresser's language, the narrative has remained distorted.

Even after forty years, salon professionals continue to endorse those misinterpreted claims.

Let's set the record straight: before 1988, when this product type entered the beauty industry, we already had various hair color services.

We used techniques such as foiling, frosting caps, and other tools that allowed us to achieve multidimensional results. Following that, we would tone the hair with "permanent hair color."

    Yes, you read that right!

Nowadays, there seems to be plenty of confusion around the concept of demi-permanent hair color.

Its actual benefits and purpose often get overshadowed by misconceptions perpetuated by the industry.

It's time to debunk the myths and clear the air about this product category.

Since many of us witnessed the debut of 'demi colors,' it might be interesting to learn how we managed without this widely-used product that now dominates our industry.

But here's something to ponder: 'Demi Permanent' hair color types are not always the perfect solution.

In some cases, choosing this type of product may not achieve the desired outcome.

So, press play and listen to a 33-minute and 3-second discussion that may shed light on this subject for you.

By the end, you'll have a better understanding of its characteristics and behaviors, enabling you to achieve more successful results with purposeful hair color formulations.

    Sit back, relax, and enjoy!”

  • Science teaches us that some things can be measured while others cannot.

This distinction is crucial to remember when evaluating the claims of so-called "experts" in our industry.

Specifically, when it comes to understanding the unique characteristics, components, and structure of curly hair, there seems to be a lot of hearsay regarding how it responds to chemicals and hair care products.

In this episode, we aim to provide you with solid information that can serve as a reliable foundation for your skills and techniques.

So, sit back, hit play, and in just 25 minutes and 50 seconds, you'll gain valuable insights into the world of curly hair.

    Enjoy the Listen!

  • Tragedies have a way of leaving an indelible mark on our lives, etching themselves into our memories forever.

Everyone has their story about 9/11, one of the most tragic events in our country's history, and the impact it had on their lives.

But what strikes me as significant is that this tragedy has become a generational story now, with a whole generation being born after that fateful day.

It's natural for the impact to lessen as we move further away from an event.

Today, I am grateful to my teaching partner, Max Maisano, for giving me the opportunity to share my story, for I was in New York City on that day - a day that forever changed my life.

As the time nears every year, I find myself becoming more introverted and quiet, reflecting on those difficult moments that are hard to put into words.

Being in such close proximity to such mass devastation can undeniably alter one's perspective and transform their life forever. It is something we carry within us, an experience that shapes our thoughts, actions, and emotions.

Now, as I witness a new generation learning about the events of 9/11 through textbooks, documentaries, and stories passed down, I can't help but feel the importance of sharing our personal narratives.

By doing so, we ensure that the memories and lessons from that day continue to resonate with future generations, reminding them of the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience during times of adversity.

Let us remember and honor those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and let us strive to create a world where such events are no longer a part of our reality.

Together, we have the power to shape a future where love triumphs over hate and where unity prevails.

Twenty-two years have passed since the fateful event that shaped my life, leading me to reflect on my story.

Today, I find solace in sharing this brief account, honoring the promise we made to each other: to “Never Forget”.

  • Hello, everyone! We're back after a few months of hiatus, during which we've been busy with our daily lives and researching new information to share with you.

Our aim is to provide enlightenment, empowerment, and confidence to propel you to the next level in your hair color career.

We are thrilled to announce some amazing additions to our educational offerings, which we will discuss in another podcast.

But for now, let's dive into a topic that often stirs up discussions: protein.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing for our hair?

We all know that hair is primarily made up of about 95% protein, and treatments can benefit weak or damaged hair. However, are there any downsides to using protein?

    Let's start from the beginning.

    What exactly is protein?

How do we use it for our hair?

Are there different types of protein?

And most importantly, are all proteins the same?

Go ahead and press play. In just about 29 minutes and 53 seconds, you will hear our take on this "never-ending" story.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the listen!
