  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Celebrity Biographer, James Gavin, Author, “Cool Heat: Anita O’Day and her Dangerous Jazz Life”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, James Gavin, is making his second appearance on our show. He’s a highly respected celebrity biographer and award-winning journalist whose meticulous research, attention to detail, and exceptional, insightful storytelling, make his books fascinating, compelling and memorable.

He’s written highly acclaimed books about some of the most iconic music artists in the world including, “Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret”, “Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker”, “Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne”, and “Is That All There Is: The Strange Life of Peggy Lee”. Last time he was on our show, we discussed his hugely successful superstar biography entitled “George Michael: A Life”.

And now, he’s released his much-anticipated 6th book entitled, “Cool Heat: Anita O’Day and her Dangerous Jazz Life”, which chronicles the eye-opening, tumultuous, sometimes tragic and yet inspirational life story of a jazz legend. Anita O’Day, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 87, after a roller coaster career spanning 70 years, was one of the most dynamic and influential vocalists of the big band and cool jazz eras. She was celebrated for her impeccable sense of rhythm, phrasing, and scat singing, and because she was such a wise-cracking hipster, she inspired the “cool school” of female jazz singers and was often referred to as “the Jezebel of Jazz”. Our guest’s book is a real page-turner, and is without question, the definitive account of Anita O’Day’s tempestuous, complicated and fascinating life and career.

  • Welcome to a very special edition of our show, which will be all about some very exciting things happening in my life. I’ve written a memoir called “Without Prejudice: My Life as a Gay Judge”, which chronicles my turbulent, tempestuous and sometimes hilarious journey from being severely bullied as a child, to being rejected by my parents after coming out to them when I was 19, to becoming a social outcast as an openly gay member of the legal profession, and then miraculously getting myself appointed Canada’s first openly gay judge, culminating in my reinvention following retirement, as a celebrity interviewer. And what’s even more exciting, is that the book has been made into a Hollywood feature film called “Without Prejudice”, directed by the brilliant Shane Stanley and starring David Arquette, David Mazouz, Rachelle Lefevre, Joe Lando, Rob Mayes, and Ernest Harden Jr. The movie will be premiering in the Fall of 2026 and in due course, you’ll be able to see it on a major streaming platform. A few weeks ago, I received an intriguing request from my dear friend and colleague, Craig Bennett from Australia, who is the host of a terrific and very popular interview program on YouTube called “Celebrity Drop”. He very kindly suggested that he come on our show and turn the tables on me, to interview me about the book and movie. I jumped at the chance, because I can’t imagine a more fun way to let you all know about everything that’s happening.
