Episodes

  • Welcome to the last episode of season two!

Today we speak to Dr Katie Allen, Liberal Member for Higgins in Melbourne. She won the seat at the 2019 Federal Election. Before politics, Katie was a medical researcher In 2015 Allen was elected an Inaugural Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

At the 2019 election, the Liberals suffered a six-percent swing against them in Higgins, enough to drop the Liberal majority to 53 percent, making Higgins a marginal seat for the first time.

Before assuming her role as the Youth Rep, Lucy worked across the Indo-Pacific as the Sri Lankan Fellow for DFAT’s New Colombo Plan Scholarship. Part of her program included working in Vietnam to combat the abuse of street children and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking, and after working at Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence, Lucy was named a contributing International Research Fellow where she helped formulate the nation’s first public defence strategy.

  • In today's episode we chat to Dr Anne Aly, the Labor Member for Cowan.

Anne is an internationally renowned expert in counter-terrorism and counter radicalisation, she has published over 100 articles and books on topics related to terrorism and international security.

Anne was the only Australian to be invited to President Obama's White House conference on violent extremism in 2015. She has worked with the United Nations on developing programs and policies on national security and counter-terrorism. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her work and in 2016 she was awarded the Australian security medal.

This has to be one of my favourite episodes yet - Anne is so refreshingly candid, compassionate and vivacious. We chat about her entry into politics, have differing opinions to the collective in a political party and what's in store for her future. I am very grateful that she's joined us on the pod.

  • This week on In the House and In the Senate is a HIGHLY requested guest - Senator Larissa Waters, Greens Senator for Queensland.

Larissa is the Australian Greens Leader in the Senate and the Greens Co-Deputy Leader.

In this chat, we talk about her passion for our natural environment, how she went from environmental law to politics and when she went viral worldwide for feeding her baby when it was hungry (wild I know).

We also talk about the frustratingly glacial pace of change within politics and how COVID has reshaped what is possible to achieve.

It's an awesome chat, I am so grateful for her time and I can't wait to hear what you think.

The YAS – or Youth Activist Series – is a 12-month program for young people of all genders and identities between the ages of 16 and 24 facilitated by Plan International Australia.

  • It's the final episode of Season 1 of In the House and In the Senate (time flies when you're having fun) and we're joined by the fabulous Brigid Meney.

Brigid is a former political staffer at both a state and federal level. She worked in Canberra until 2016 in various roles for various Liberal Members of Parliament, including as a health and aged care adviser for Minister Ken Wyatt.

Brigid now works for a not-for-profit professional body in the resources industry, managing policy and media.

We cover a lot of ground - chatting parenting and politics, why Brigid chose the Young Libs and why women need to stop pretending that we aren't interested in that position.

It's a great chat and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

  • Hi guys - I'm a big podcaster (not just the recording but the listening) and one of my favourite regular podcasts is 7am. Ruby Jones wakes me up every morning and gets me across the key issues in the political landscape.

That's why I was so excited to hear about the new investigative series, Everybody Knows, from the creators of 7am.

In this five-part podcast series, journalist Ruby Jones explores the rise and fall of the MeToo movement in Australia and investigates serious allegations of harassment, abuse and assault in the Australian music industry.

  • This week we speak to Dr Helen Haines, the Independent Federal Member for Indi.

Dr Haines is the first independent in Australian history to succeed another independent in a federal seat. Rather than a political party, she was endorsed by a community organisation – Voice 4 Indi – as a potential successor to incumbent MP Cathy McGowan.

McGowan had been the member for Indi since 2013 and her winning the seat of Indi from Sophie Mirabella and then retaining it was a huge shake up for the major parties.

Indi was previously considered a conservative stronghold but fast-forward to 2019 – Independent Cathy McGowan was endorsing another independent Dr Helen Haines to campaign for the seat. Dr Haines campaigned strongly on increasing Newstart (now Jobseeker), climate change and rural health services, she won the seat and she’s been advocating in Parliament ever since.

Linda was the first Aboriginal person to be elected to the NSW Parliament and the first Aboriginal woman to serve in the Australian House of Representatives. Linda’s commitment to Indigenous issues spans more than 30 years.

We chat about her pride in and commitment to the Labor Party, her passion for social justice and truth-telling and the need for more women to have a crack!

  • This week we're speaking to Senator Hollie Hughes, Liberal Senator for New South Wales.

In our chat, Hollie and I chat about her "long and winding road" to Parliament House. In 2017, she was in line to replace former Nationals senator Fiona Nash who was disqualified for being a dual citizen but then Hollie herself was ruled ineligible because of she was employed part-time as a member of a Government tribunal - the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

We chat through this, party politics and preselections and... vaping!

  • We're kicking off the first season of In the House and In the Senate by speaking to Labor Member for Canterbury, first Greek Australian woman elected to NSW Parliament and my first boss, Sophie Cotsis.

We discuss how seeing her mother discriminated against motivated her to make change, her recent fight with breast cancer and how it has impacted how she views politics, rebuilding the Labor Party in NSW and her thoughts on how the Berejiklian Government is handling health.

NOTE - we recorded this episode a couple of weeks ago in the throes of much speculation about the Labor leadership in NSW - hence our conversation at 25.30.
