  • Guest: Shaan Patel, CEO of Prep Expert

Here’s an unexpected formula for success. Step 1: Get a lower score than expected on your SAT. Step 2: Parlay your disappointment into a multimillion dollar company.

That’s how Shaan Patel’s leadership journey began. It included a victory on Shark Tank, mentoring from Mark Cuban, and earning an M.D. It’s not the typical path to industry-leading CEO, but the lessons Shaan learned along the path are important for leaders in any sector. He shares those lessons with us in this episode.

Here's what Shaan and host Maureen Metcalf cover:

Why winning is NOT the name of the game in business (but neither is losing!);How embracing change instead of fighting it puts you far ahead of the competition; andThe mindsets Shaan keeps foremost to inform his leadership – and why that leadership is still evolving.

  • Guest: Danièle Henkel, Knight of the Order of Merit & CEO of Daniele Henkel Enterprises

What’s love got to do with leadership? Turns out: quite a lot!

Danièle Henkel sees love in many ways: from passion for your work to genuine respect for the people around you. It’s another facet in building trust; in this case, though, the trust is in people rather than institutions. In a world where leaders often take the quick path – and its ethical shortcuts – to achieve success, Danièle’s take on trust and authenticity in the C-suite is enormously refreshing. She shares her personal journey, from her early days in Morocco to running a successful company in Canada – and the lessons that journey taught her. Each setback along the way has only fueled her relentless optimism, and her drive for leaders everywhere to be clear and responsible for their words and actions.

  • Guest: Nancy Adler, S. Bronfman Chair in Management at McGill University

There’s not just an art to leadership; art improves leadership!

That’s the core point of Dr. Nancy Adler’s discussion in this episode. A consultant and professor at McGill University, she’s found that art enables leaders to shift perspectives more readily, thus seeing solutions more effectively. That broadness of thought is more critical than ever: in the emerging business climate, what a leader knows is becoming far less relevant than the leader’s ability to shift perspectives and continually learn new suites of knowledge and skills.

Here's what Nancy and Maureen cover:

Why the vaunted MBA is becoming far less relevant in the C-suite;Why leadership is an active verb – and why leadership titles are nouns losing their impact; andHow a pizza box became the most effective communication tool to break through a Congressman’s barriers.

Politics and megaweather get all the attention on climate change, but the impacts on business are profound. The liabilities for business may rise faster than the temperature! So why are so many business leaders so far behind in dealing with it?

  • Guests: Lynn Shollen & Sam Wilson, researchers at Christopher Newport University and Swinburne University of Technology

That’s according to the Leadership Attitudes Survey. Dr. Lynn Shollen joins us to share more of the results. Dr. Sam Wilson chimes in to reveal insights from the Australian Leadership Index. The two studies had remarkably similar findings.

The bottom line: most of us feel our leaders are too far removed from the everyday experiences of ordinary people.

So what can leaders do about it? Listen in to find out!

  • Guests: WE Empower Challenge winners Hadeel Anabtawi & Habiba Ali with Amanda Ellis

While female entrepreneurs have made great strides in some countries, in the U.S. and other nations women still face significant barriers that just aren’t there for male-headed start-ups. Despite that, women leaders are making a difference by promoting positive change in their local communities – changes that can have a global impact.

The United Nations recognizes several entrepreneurial women every year with their WE Empower UN Sustainable Development Goals Challenge; it promotes female founders globally who run successful businesses while supporting the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs). Past winners Hadeel Anabtawi of Jordan and Habiba Ali of Nigeria join Challenge co-chair Amanda Ellis to discuss their successes, their challenges…and the importance of women working with each other to overcome those challenges.
