Summer is here, the trails are calling, group rides and runs are filling your calendar, and suddenly those strength workouts start slipping. Sound familiar? The truth is, staying consistent with strength training is not about having more motivation or finding extra hours in your day. It’s about creating systems that make it easier to show up, even when life gets busy.
In this episode of Making Shift Happen, I’m sharing practical strategies that will help you maintain your strength throughout cycling season without feeling like you’re adding more to your plate. You’ll learn why consistency – not perfection – is what leads to stronger rides/runs, fewer injuries, and better performance by the end of the season. Remember, you don’t need “perfect” weeks, you just need consistent ones.

Do you ever feel like you’re “on” all the time? Your phone buzzes, your inbox fills up, Slack notifications pop up, a text comes in, and someone tags you on social media. And before you know it, you’re responding to everyone else while your own needs continue to fall to the bottom of the list. Sound familiar? You may not know how to set boundaries at work.
In this episode of Making Shift Happen, we’re exploring one of the biggest contributors to chronic stress that few people talk about: constant accessibility.
Being available 24/7 might make you feel productive, but it’s often keeping your nervous system in a state of heightened alert. When your brain never gets a true break, your focus, recovery, creativity, relationships, and overall well-being all begin to suffer.
If you’re a busy professional, business owner, parent, athlete, or simply someone who feels like everyone has access to your time except you, this episode is for you. We’ll talk about why setting healthy boundaries isn’t selfish, why your nervous system needs periods of true “off” time, and simple strategies to help you reclaim your attention without sacrificing your goals.

Do you feel guilty when you rest? Do you find yourself saying things like, “I’ll relax after I finish this project.” Or, “I’ll take a day off once work slows down.” Or what about, “I’ll rest when I finally get caught up.” Hint: You will almost never be caught up.
If so, you’re not alone. Many high-achievers have unknowingly adopted the belief that rest is something they have to earn. The problem? That mindset often keeps us stuck in a cycle of chronic stress, mental exhaustion, and nervous system dysregulation.
In this episode of Making Shift Happen, we’re unpacking one of the biggest productivity myths out there: that your worth is tied to your output. The truth is that recovery isn’t a reward for hard work – it’s a requirement for sustainable performance. Whether you’re trying to improve your health, become more consistent with exercise, perform better at work, or simply feel like yourself again, learning how to rest without guilt may be one of the most important skills you develop.

Many endurance athletes swing between two extremes when it comes to nutrition: ignoring hunger signals until they’re ravenous or obsessing over every calorie and macro. But, thereâs a smarter middle ground.
In this Mindful March episode of Making Shift Happen, weâre talking about how mindful eating can help athletes fuel better, manage hunger, and support performance without turning nutrition into a full-time job.
Mountain bikers, gravel cyclists, and endurance athletes often experience suppressed hunger after hard rides or efforts, which can lead to under-fueling early in the day and then overeating later at night. Learning how to recognize these signals – and when to eat even when youâre not hungry – can dramatically improve recovery, energy levels, and overall training consistency.
In this episode, you’ll learn simple strategies to eat with more awareness, improve your fueling habits, and support better performance on the bike.
What Youâll Learn in This Episode
Why hard training can suppress hunger signalsThe difference between mindful eating and restrictive dietingHow endurance athletes accidentally under-fuel early in the dayWhy late-night hunger is often a fueling problem, not a discipline problemSimple habits that help athletes eat more intentionallyHow mindful eating can improve energy, recovery, and performanceCheck out these other relevant episodes:241. Can you really build stress resilience, improve focus, and support recovery in just one minute a day? Yes! And no, you donât need a meditation cushion to do it. In this episode of Making Shift Happen, Coach Jen breaks down simple mindfulness practices for busy professionals, gravel cyclists, and mountain bikers who want better performance on and off the bike.
If youâve ever thought: “Iâm bad at meditation,” “My mind wonât stop racing,” or “I donât have time for mindfulness,” then this episode is for you. Youâll learn how to incorporate one-minute mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and somatic tools into your daily routine, including during rides, strength training, meals, and stressful workdays. Mindfulness isnât about clearing your mind; itâs about building awareness.
Fortunately, that same awareness builds resilience as an athlete.
What Youâll Learn in This Episode
What mindfulness really is (and what itâs not)Why you canât âdo meditation wrongâHow to manage stress with simple breathing techniquesHow mindfulness improves cycling performance and recoveryHow to build emotional resilience as a high-performing athleteEasy mindful eating strategies for athletesA powerful legs-up-the-wall recovery practice for better sleepHow to reduce stress in one minute or lessMindfulness practice helps reduce stress among other things. Stress impacts your Heart rate variability (HRV), sleep quality, muscle recovery, cortisol levels, and decision-making under pressure (like on a race or bike course). For endurance athletes and strength-focused cyclists, stress management isnât optional; it directly impacts training consistency, power output, and long-term performance.
So, by adding short, daily mindfulness exercises, you can help improve your focus during rides, enhance pacing awareness, support nervous system recovery, increase stress tolerance, and reduce reactive decision-making. This is one way you can take your performance and training to the next level.

Many cyclists adopt bodybuilding-style strength training in the gym, assuming it will improve power and endurance on the bike. However, research shows that heavy, low-volume strength training – and not high-rep hypertrophy training – improves cycling economy, maximal power output, and time trial performance.
In this episode, Coach Jen explains why bodybuilding workouts may interfere with cycling performance and outlines evidence-based strength training principles for mountain bikers and gravel cyclists.
