Opus Dei, the highly secretive Catholic sect started by the Spanish priest Josemaría Escrivá in the 1920s has its tentacles spread all over the world. They claim it is a deeply religious order that helps ordinary people “love God and serve others through work well done, carried out with honesty and integrity”. Claims against the group accuse it of child grooming, human trafficking, and psychological and emotional control – claims Opus Dei categorically denies. Martine Vik Magnussen's body was found hidden under rubble in the basement of a block of flats in Great Portland Street, Marylebone, London, on 16 March 2008. She had been raped and murdered and died as the result of strangulation. Farouk Abdulhak, her one-time friend and who she was last seen with on the night of her death, is the son of billionaire and one of Yemen's wealthiest men Shaher Abdulhak. He is the only suspect in the case. In our inaugural episode, host Alex Matthews is joined by Piri Thirunimalan, senior reporter for The Crime Desk who travelled to Norway to speak exclusively to Martine's father Petter in their family home to talk about his decades long campaign for justice.
