This is Joey. On this episode, my co-host and friend Amy Alderman join Zoë Roff in paying tribute to her brother Zeth and reflecting on his passing away by suicide. We all four went to the same high school, know the same people; so for us, it was a meaningful glimpse back into an era of time we all shared, living in the same town at our most impressionable ages. That means something special to me, especially as I get older.
Zeth's story, although uniquely beautiful and horrific, also represents the narrative of all humans; and most specifically the many who just like me, have experienced the havoc caused by the darkness of mental illness.
So, cheers to one of the brightest and kindest out there, Zeth Davis.

David Schirduan grew up with a very similar faith-background as Joey's, but the biggest difference? David spent a part of his "youth group, high school days" in the youth group that Joey led almost 20 years ago.
David creates literature for folks who enjoy role-playing games, many of these games along the same lines of Dungeons and Dragons. Growing up, both Joey and David were taught that these types of games belonged in the same category as tarot cards, ouija boards and other satanic tools that should be avoided due to the sorts of evil spirits they are likely connected to. David is still a practicing Christian and comes on the show to shed some light on Dungeons and Dragons and walk us through how role-playing games work, hoping to lessen the stigma and eliminate some unwarranted fears amongst the christian community.
With co-host Amy Alderman providing staunch pushback, these two alongside Joey Svendsen, talk through the morals of dabbling in things that are seen by most Christians as evil that needs to be avoided. David walks Joey through a role-playing game scenario and explains how role-playing games can be used for beauty, connection and healthy creativity.

The two dig deep into Hayne's story including his upbringing and how he now parents his own kids. Matt laments on the lack of appreciation for the pain experienced by former Christians who have deconstructed out of the faith. They both share how seasons of anger was a part of their journeys.

Stoy's cultural upbringing and mentoring (or lack of) instilled various perspectives about sex, marriage and success, that he'd later have to grow out of. Joey and Liz lament over inappropriate hip-hop lyrics, having sons who love hip-hop, and Matt exhorts Christians to repent from capitalism.
Stoy also reminisces on middle school lingo amongst him and his black peers, throwing Joey into gleeful middle school nostalgia, remembering as kids hanging with Stoy and other black peers of Joey's.

Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, MD started a TikTok account, began to acquire a very large following and literally became hooked. After he started to ignore his family because of the "TikTok addiction," his wife and daughters took matters into their own hands, pointed out to him the severity of his issue and pleaded for him to get help. Now clean from his addiction, he decided to do his own research on social media addiction and his findings are captured in his book, "Influenced: The Impact of Social Media on Our Perception."
Telling his story on media outlets such as Fox News, Dr. Brian educates others from a place of humility. Discovering firsthand the allure of being "followed," "liked," and the ensuing Dopamine hits each exposure elicits, if it wasn't for his caring and persistent family, the doctor may still be locked in for more Dopamine, constantly obsessing and coming back for more.
His book outlines the dangers of social media, sometimes (as he claims) just as deadly as a gun, but it also highlights the good coming from this 21st Century invention that has changed the world, producing many out-of-control addictions like the one Dr. Brian overcame. Dr. Brian shares his story and his findings.

Joey opens up about what he feels may be too much personal apathy about politics and voting. After sharing with a handful of the show's co-hosts on this one, he's met with more cynicism than he can handle. Four of the five present are convinced that the USA "political machine" doesn't care about people; only getting more votes for their team and acquiring more money and power. And the guilt that many Christians try to push onto those who aren't more involved in political activism isn't merited, nor fair, according to some of the Christians on this one.

Corey Nathan, host of the Talkin‘ Politics & Religion Without Killin‘ Each Other Podcast, joins the show to discuss a weakness of his. He has a very hard time keeping composure when it comes to difficult discussions about politics and religion. But deep in his heart, as a former Jewish man, now Christian, he knows that love is the goal. And thus, the birth of his podcast.
Joey and Corey talk how much of society sees people with bad beliefs as bad people who should be scorned; and there's certainly no aiming to humanize them. Joey admits to sentiments about some one who he fears will anger people, but is finally learning what may be the true meaning of following Christ. Corey believes that most people are in the "exhausted majority," people who truly are "done with" the hatred and polarity, but their exhaustion breeds silence. There's some political talk as Corey is a fan of what Biden has done so far, and the two discuss the backwardness of believing deeply in a conviction and trying to spread that zeal by yelling and belittling others.

Jack Hoey (the father) and Jack Hoey (the son) join Joey and Matt to discuss the likelihood of God's existence, why God doesn't make things more obvious, whether or not people can condition themselves to believe, how dependable the bible is to base meaning of life on, and what stock should be placed on spiritual experiences. While Joey and "the Jacks" consider themselves believers in the Christian faith, Matt is a former fundamentalist Christian now atheist, very familiar with the tenants of faith and traditional beliefs in the Bible. His departure from faith was a very painful season of deconstruction.

Joey had a seizure a couple of weeks ago and his friends' security camera captured it all. With "firefighter Hayne" present, we learn a bit more about seizures but we also hear some horror stories he's seen on the job as a rescue worker. Oh, and Ellen thought her son was dead for a few seconds.
Along the way, the conversation expands to the usual chit chat about everything, from how the younger generation talks about TikTok like it's the creator of all entertainment, how Ellen is still happily sober, when complementing a woman turns into hitting on her, why true crime entertainment is so alluring, and why Ellen feels compelled to subject herself to footage of the horrors going on in the war around Palestine.
