15 Things I Bet You Didn't Know About Your VaginaHow to Use a Vaginal DilatorMaking Beer and Food with Vagininal Yeast
  • Vaginal opening (a.k.a. vestibule or introitus)

“When most women refer to the vagina, they are really referring to the vestibule,” says Minkin. It's the area immediately outside the vagina that extends from the labia minora to the hymen.

    Vagina

“The vagina is an elastic, muscular canal with a soft, flexible lining that provides lubrication and sensation,” says Minkin.

A healthy vagina is a rich, deep pink color and has a number of accordion-like folds on the interior walls that allow for maximum elasticity. The vaginal wall is about three to four millimeters think and often appears moist.

In a non-aroused state, the walls of the vagina are collapsed against each other

    Cervix

The cervix connects your uterus to your vagina."it looks like a donut with a tiny hole in the middle" to let menstrual blood out and sperm in. “During labor, it opens or ‘dilates’ fully to allow the baby to pass through to the vagina to be born.”

You can typically feel your cervix at the end of your vagina if you insert your fingers. It's also what ob-gyns take a swab of during a Pap test (cue the cringing). Luckily, your cervix acts as the gatekeeper to the rest of your body—so don't worry about tampons or other objects getting lost inside you.

    Ovaries

You have two ovaries—one on either side of your lower abdomen, below your belly button. “This is where the hormones—including estrogen—that trigger menstruation are produced,” says Minkin. “They also store eggs, and release at least one each month for possible fertilization, which is known as ovulation.”

    Fallopian tubes

You also have two fallopian tubes that extend from your ovaries to your uterus. “After the egg is released during ovulation, it moves into the fallopian tube, where it stays for about 24 hours, waiting for a single sperm to fertilize it,” says Minkin.

“If fertilization doesn’t occur, the egg moves through the uterus and disintegrates," says Minkin. That's what eventually causes your period—when those hormone levels begin to fall and your body starts shedding the uterine lining.

If there is a sperm available to fertilize the egg, however, the fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube for three to four days before moving into the uterus for implantation, says Minkin.

    Uterus

Also known as the womb, this muscular organ—located in the lower abdomen between the bladder and the rectum—is usually the size of a small pear when a woman isn’t pregnant.

“If an egg is fertilized and becomes an embryo, it attaches to a wall of the uterus, creates a placenta, and develops into a baby,” explains Minkin. “During pregnancy, the uterus expands to hold whatever it needs to, whether a six-pound baby or quadruplets. During labor, it contracts to push the baby down through the cervix and into the vagina for birth.”

Also, fun fact: The lower part of your uterus actually lifts toward your belly button when you're turned on. This process is called vaginal tenting, according to Planned Parenthood, and is a way for the vagina to make more room for whatever wants to come in.

  • The Vulva

The vulva covers the entrance to the vagina. The vulva has five parts: mons pubis, labia, clitoris, urinary opening, and vaginal opening. The mons pubis is the mound of tissue and skin above your legs, in the middle. This area becomes covered with hair when you go through puberty. The labia are the two sets of skin folds (often called lips) on either side of the opening of the vagina. The labia majora are the outer lips, and the labia minora are the inner lips. It is normal for the labia to look different from each other. While many people think that the clitoris is a small spot just above the vaginal opening, it is, in fact, a much larger complex. The part most visible is the glans, which is 16 millimeters in length, on average. This is the part that most people will be familiar with. The glans is covered by the prepuce, which is a skin formed from the vaginal labia. Some people liken the prepuce to foreskin. Hidden inside the pubic bone is the rest of the clitoris, and the entire complex is similar in shape to the penis, with a total length of between 9 and 11 centimeters. The clitoris is an erectile organ and is thought to be at the heart of female sexual arousal. The urinary opening, below the clitoris, is where your urine (pee) leaves the body.Perineum- “This soft, sensitive territory lies between the vaginal opening and the anus and is sometimes quite short,” says Minkin. When relaxed, this area can facilitate birth.

  • What does a vagina smell like?

    https://www.healthline.com/health/womens-health/vagina-smells#1

Normal smells for a healthy vaginaTangy or fermentedIt’s very common for vaginas to produce a tangy or sour aroma. Some compare it to the smell of fermented foods. In fact, yogurt, sourdough bread, and even some sour beer contain the same type of good bacteria that dominate most healthy vaginas: Lactobacilli. If it smells curiously similar to that sour IPA you had last weekend, don’t freak out.

    Reasons for a tangy odor

Acidity. The pH of a healthy vagina is slightly acidic, between 3.8 and 4.5. “The Lactobacilli bacteria keep the vagina acidic,” says Minkin. “This protects against an overgrowth of the bad kinds of bacteria.”Coppery like a pennyMany people report smelling a coppery, metallic vaginal odor. This is usually nothing to worry about. Rarely, it signifies a more serious problem.

    Reasons for a coppery odor

Blood. Blood contains iron, which has a metallic smell. The most common reason for blood is menstruation. During your period, blood and tissue shed from your uterine lining and travel through your vaginal canal.Sex. Light bleeding after sex can be common. This is usually due to vaginal dryness or vigorous sex that can cause small cuts or scrapes. To prevent this, try using lube.A coppery smell can also be due to less common, but serious, causes of vaginal bleeding. The metallic scent shouldn’t linger too long after your period is over. If your vagina has had contact with semen, this may change the pH level and cause a metallic smell.Sweet like molassesWhen we say sweet we don’t mean freshly baked cookies sweet. We mean robust and earthy. But don’t fret, a sweetish tinge is no cause for concern.

    Reasons for a sweet odor

Bacteria. Yep, bacteria again. Your vaginal pH is an ever-changing bacterial ecosystem. And sometimes this means you might smell a little sweet.Chemical like a newly cleaned bathroomAn odor similar to bleach or ammonia could be a couple of different things. Sometimes, this odor is a reason to see a doctor.

    Reasons for a chemical odor

Urine. Urine contains a byproduct of ammonia called urea. A buildup of urine in your underwear or around your vulva could put off a chemical smell. Keep in mind, urine smelling strongly of ammonia is a sign of dehydration.Bacterial vaginosis. It’s also possible a chemical-like smell is a sign of bacterial vaginosis. “A chemical smell often falls under the category of fishy,” says Minkin.Bacterial vaginosis is a very common infection. Symptoms include:a foul or fishy odorthin gray, white, or green dischargevaginal itchingburning during urinationSkunky like BO or a smoked herbal, earthy scentNo, it’s not just you. Many people find a similarity between body odor and marijuana. Sadly, there isn’t a good scientific answer for this, although Vice did take a stab at it. But thanks to the sweat glands down there, at least we do know why vaginas and body odor can smell so similar.

    Reasons for a skunky odor

Emotional stress. Your body contains two types of sweat glands, apocrine and eccrine. The eccrine glands produce sweat to cool your body down and the apocrine glands respond to your emotions. These apocrine glands populate your armpits and, you guessed it, your groin. When you are stressed or anxious, the apocrine glands produce a milky fluid. On its own this fluid is odorless. But when this fluid contacts the abundance of vaginal bacteria on your vulva, it can produce a pungent aroma.Fishy or that fillet you forgot aboutYou’ve probably heard an abnormal vaginal odor described as fishy. In fact, fresh fish shouldn’t smell like much at all. Decomposing fish is the more apt comparison. Why? Trimethylamine, which is the chemical compound responsible for both the distinct aroma of rotting fish and some abnormal vaginal odors.

Reasons for a dead fish odor

Bacterial vaginosis. “You get bacterial vaginosis when there’s an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina,” says Minkin. “And these anaerobic organisms are odorous.”Trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis is the most common curable sexually transmitted infection and easily treatable with a course of antibiotics. It’s known for its pungent fishy odor. “The trichomoniasis infection can be quite smelly,” says Minkin. “It’s a more pronounced fishy odor than bacterial vaginosis.”Rotten like a decaying organismA rotten odor that makes your nose wince and your face contort is definitely not the norm. If the smell is putrid, like a dead organism, it may not be your vagina but something in your vagina.

    Reasons for a rotten odor

A forgotten tampon. Inadvertently letting a tampon go days, even weeks, inside a vagina is much more common than you’d think. “I can’t tell you how many tampons I’ve taken out of patients,” says Minkin. “This happens to lots and lots of people. It isn’t something you need to be embarrassed about.”See your doctor if an odor is accompanied by:itching or burningpainpain during sexthick, cottage cheese dischargevaginal bleeding unrelated to your period

Menopause changes the pH level with the change estrogen levels.

Pregnancy changes the pH level too

Plus your smell of smell can be enhanced while pregnant and you might smell your vagina more, but don’t worry no one else can.
  • This week we have a very special guest, Sue Robbins. Listen in as she tells us all about her personal experience as a trans, intersex woman!

Random piercing shops genital piercings disclaimer:

A genital piercing is often looked upon as being more painful or harder to heal than other piercings. They really aren’t. Our genitals are very vascular, which aids in healing, and since they are shielded by clothing they aren’t exposed to the environmental hazards that other parts of our body are. Of course that does not mean you should mistreat or neglect your new body piercing. By all means practice common sense!

Our genitals (much like our ears) are very unique to us. A piercing that is suited for one person may not be comfortable for another. With that in mind, our body piercers will work with you to find the piercing that is best for you.

Before taking the plunge here are a few questions you should ask yourself: Are you interested in aesthetics or stimulation? Are you considering getting another piercing in that area in the future? Is this piercing for your enjoyment or for your partner? These are just a few of the questions our piercers will ask you and of course any information you would like to offer will be helpful. These answers will help us to determine the best placement in the area you would like pierced and the type of jewelry that will be most beneficial to all of those involved.

  • Menopause

Menopause is actually three different stages in your life

Peri-menopause refers to the 4-10 years before menopause when your ovaries slowly produce less estrogen.Menopause refers to the time when your menstrual periods have stopped for at least a yearPost-menopause is the stage of life after you have not had a period for 12 months or longer

Pre-menopause: Symptoms usually last 4 years but can last as long as 10. This is when you start getting hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

During perimenopause, your body begins to make less estrogen. This continues until the last one or two years of perimenopause until your hormone levels drop rapidly. You can still become pregnant during this time.

Loss of estrogen leads to things like:

Hair thinning/ hair lossDry skin and less elasticityMigraines Memory lossBody odorSleep disruptionMood changesWeight gainHeavier periods Vaginal dryness another side effect of your body’s drop in estrogen. You can use lube at home but if that doesn't help you can see your doctor for other options like estrogen treatments.

Menopause is officially diagnosed after you have gone 12 months of amenorrhea (without your period) after pre-menopause.

After menopause symptoms like hot and cold flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc. can last up for 5 more years but usually start to decrease 3 years into menopause.Menopause is essentially the same as pre-menopause minus your period.

    Post-menopause

Yay, no periodYay, no birth control! You can still get STI’s so you should still use condoms and the likeYou may be at increased risk for the following conditions after menopause:osteoporosiscardiovascular diseasedepression and other mental health conditions
  • Maternity QuestionsWhat is the question you as a maternity nurse have to answer the most?Do vaginas really stretch out? What is an episiotomy? Is the husband stitch something that still happens? What are my chances of miscarriage? This is usually the overwhelming fear, so let’s break it down.Once you’ve heard a heartbeat, chances of miscarriage breakdown like this:9.4% at six weeks4.6% at seven weeks1.5% at eight weeks0.5% at nine weeks0.7% at ten weeks

These numbers can vary greatly depending on your individual medical history, your age, the father's age, morning sickness (more can = higher HCG which is good), and fetal heart rate (at six weeks two days, heart rate of 100).

And yes, as they say, once you’ve cleared the first trimester, your rate of miscarriage drops to less than 1%.

    Is cramping normal during pregnancy
