When people dream about opening a studio, they often think the hardest part will be finding clients, hiring the right team, or managing finances.

But what if the hardest part is something much less obvious?

    Decision-making.

In this solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah reflects on recent conversations with aspiring studio owners and shares what she's learned from years of running and growing a business. From choosing software and setting prices to considering major investments and navigating uncertainty, every decision comes with risk—and no one can tell you exactly how it will turn out.

    In this episode, we discuss:

why certainty is a luxury entrepreneurs rarely havethe difference between trusting your intuition and relying on your emotionshow knowing your numbers gives you confidence, not guaranteeswhy good decisions don't always lead to good outcomesand how every decision becomes an opportunity to learn and improve

Whether you own a business, dream of starting one, or simply find yourself facing difficult decisions, this conversation is a reminder that success isn't about predicting the future. It's about making thoughtful choices, learning from the results, and having the courage to keep moving forward.

Spend enough time on social media and you'll eventually meet the "Pilates Police."

The people who are certain there is only one correct way to teach, one correct way to move, and one correct answer to every question.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian explore how social media has changed the way we discuss movement—and why certainty, public criticism, and fear-based messaging may be doing more harm than good.

    We discuss:

why the loudest voices online aren't always the wisestthe difference between evidence, opinion, and dogmahow fear-based cueing affects clients and teacherswhy respectful debate moves our profession forwardand how to stay curious while continuing to learn and grow

We don't believe great teaching comes from trying to prove everyone else wrong.

It comes from asking better questions, staying open to new ideas, and making thoughtful decisions based on the person standing in front of you.

Because at the end of the day, our responsibility isn't to win arguments on the internet.

It's to help people move with confidence, competence, and care.

What are we really teaching when we teach Pilates?

Is it stronger abs? Better posture? Improved mobility?

Or is it something much bigger?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah explores how Pilates can become a practice ground for resilience, confidence, and self-awareness. Inspired by the Mind Over Muscle workshop, we dive into the science behind challenge and discuss how movement can help clients build skills that extend far beyond the studio.

We explore why appropriately dosed challenge helps us grow, how confidence develops through experience, why our brains change through repetition, and how thoughtful coaching creates lasting change.

Whether you're a Pilates teacher, movement professional, or lifelong learner, this episode will challenge you to think differently about what happens every time someone steps onto a mat or reformer.

    In this episode:

✔ Why challenge is essential for growth

✔ The science of Hormesis and Stress Inoculation

✔ How Self-Efficacy builds lasting confidence

    ✔ Neuroplasticity and habit formation

✔ Why autonomy and choice improve motivation

✔ The importance of awareness in learning and change

✔ Practical coaching ideas you can use in your next class

What happens when inspiration becomes imitation?

This episode was inspired by a conversation with a member of the Pilates community whose teacher training materials—including her written manuals, photographs, and original work—were copied and resold by someone who had enrolled in, but never completed, her program.

While that story sparked this discussion, this episode is about something much bigger.

As educators, coaches, and movement professionals, where do we draw the line between learning from others and creating something of our own?

    We discuss:

why intellectual property matters in movement educationthe difference between inspiration, collaboration, and copyinggiving credit to the teachers and methods that shaped uscreating original manuals, teacher trainings, and educational resourceswhy every method is built on the shoulders of those who came before usand how integrity ultimately becomes part of your professional reputation

Every teacher is influenced by someone.

The question is not whether you borrow ideas.

The question is whether you acknowledge them, build upon them thoughtfully, and create something that genuinely reflects your own experience and perspective.

Because your reputation is built not only on what you teach—but on how you choose to teach it.

    Pilates is everywhere right now.

From luxury studios and gym floors to social media trends, celebrity endorsements, and wellness influencers, the method has experienced a level of popularity that few could have predicted even a decade ago.

But is this growth entirely positive?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian take a candid look at the current Pilates landscape, discussing what excites them, what concerns them, and where they believe the industry may be heading next.

    We discuss:

the explosive growth of reformer Pilatesthe influence of social media and wellness culturewhether Pilates is becoming a trend or a sustainable movement practicethe opportunities and challenges created by rapid industry growththe role of teacher education and coaching qualitywhat gets lost when marketing becomes more important than methodologyand what we hope the future of Pilates looks like

This is not a conversation about gatekeeping or nostalgia.

It is a conversation about growth, quality, accessibility, and how we can ensure that the increasing popularity of Pilates ultimately serves the people who practice it.

Because while trends come and go, great teaching, thoughtful movement, and meaningful client experiences never go out of style.

Why do some people always choose the same reformer? Stand in the back of the room? Avoid certain springs—or always add more?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian Teutscher explores the psychology behind the choices we make in movement spaces and why they are often about much more than fitness.

Because people do not just bring their bodies into class. They bring their history, identity, fears, habits, and nervous systems too.

    We discuss:

why predictability can feel safethe psychology of comparison and challengewhy some people push too hard while others hold backwhat these patterns reveal about us as humansand how teachers can approach them with curiosity rather than judgment

Movement is never just physical. It is emotional, social, and deeply human.

Because sometimes the most interesting thing about movement is not what it reveals about our bodies—but what it reveals about ourselves.

Touch is one of the most debated topics in movement education.

Some teachers believe tactile cueing is one of the most effective tools available. Others argue that it is often overused, creates dependency, or becomes a shortcut for unclear communication.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian dive into the tactile cueing debate and explore a question that is far more interesting than whether touch is "good" or "bad":

How do great teachers decide which tool to use, when, and why?

    We discuss:

when tactile cueing can accelerate learning and body awarenesswhy touching a client should never be the default solutionthe difference between helping someone learn and simply moving them into positionbodily autonomy, consent, and respecting client boundarieshow teacher ego can sometimes influence coaching decisionswhether tactile cueing creates independence or dependencyand why the best teachers develop a wide range of communication tools rather than relying on a single approach

Ultimately, this conversation is not really about touch.

It is about decision-making, teaching philosophy, communication, and how we can better serve the human being standing in front of us.

Because tactile cueing is neither inherently good nor inherently bad.

Like every coaching choice, it should be made intentionally, respectfully, and in service of the client's learning experience.

One of the most emotionally loaded things in fitness are the words:

    “beginner” and “advanced.”

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah explores why adults often struggle with movement labels far more than we realize — and how those labels can shape confidence, behavior, shame, ego, and even the way people experience their own bodies.

    We talk about why:

beginner does not mean weak or incapable advanced does not mean perfect or pain-free movement is not linear and good coaching is about adaptability, not forcing everybody into the same experience

This conversation also explores how language changes the emotional tone of a class, why precision and control are often misunderstood in modern fitness culture, and how thoughtful coaching creates space for people to progress safely and confidently over time.

Third-party fitness aggregators like ClassPass, Urban Sports, and Wellhub were originally presented as discovery tools that could help independent studios grow.

And in many ways, they did.

    But over time, something shifted.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah takes a deeper look at how these platforms are no longer simply helping clients find studios — they are increasingly shaping pricing expectations, consumer behavior, studio sustainability, and the overall culture of boutique fitness.

    This conversation explores:

why boutique Pilates operates differently than large gyms how pricing pressure affects independent studios the growing “race to the bottom” in some cities why long-term client progress requires consistency how studio hopping changes community and coaching relationships and what happens when convenience becomes the primary driver of the fitness industry

This is not a black-and-white conversation, nor is it an attack on technology or accessibility.

It is a thoughtful discussion about sustainability, relationship building, and what kind of industry we are creating long term.

Because boutique fitness was built on relationships — not transactions.

Why Confidence Comes After the Challenge

Confidence is often treated like a prerequisite.
People think they need to feel ready, fearless, or fully prepared before they try something difficult.

But in reality, confidence is usually built afterward.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, we explore why appropriate challenge is essential for growth — physically, mentally, and emotionally — and why avoiding discomfort completely may actually make us less resilient over time.

We discuss the difference between productive challenge and overwhelm, how great coaches create psychologically safe environments without removing difficulty, and why resilience is something we practice rather than something we are simply born with.

    We also dive into:

cognitive and emotional responses to challenge nervous system regulation movement, fear, and self-trust grit and frustration tolerance confidence after injury modern pain science and how coaching language can either reinforce fragility or help rebuild capability

This conversation is especially important for movement teachers, coaches, and anyone recovering from injury or rebuilding trust in their body.

One of the most frustrating experiences as a teacher is feeling like you are explaining something clearly… and realizing the room is not responding the way you expected.

Most teachers assume the problem is the cue itself.
But often, the issue goes much deeper than the words being used.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah explores why communication in teaching is far more complex than simply giving good instructions.

We talk about cognitive load, attention, timing, emotional state, tone of voice, and the reality that clients are not receiving information in a neutral environment. People come into class carrying stress, distractions, insecurities, habits, and completely different ways of processing information.

This episode looks at why great teaching is not just about saying the “right” thing, but understanding how people actually hear, interpret, and respond to what is being said.

Because sometimes the most effective shift is not changing the cue — it is changing the way the cue is delivered.

If you teach movement, coach, or work with people in any capacity, this conversation will likely change the way you think about communication in the room.

Growth in the Pilates industry is often seen as a natural progression.

    You start as a client.
At some point, you begin teaching.
And for some, that eventually leads to running a studio.

But those transitions are not automatic.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, we take a closer look at what actually changes at each stage — and what is required to move forward in a meaningful way.

We talk about the shift from being responsible for your own body to being responsible for other people, and how that alone requires a different level of awareness, communication, and decision-making.

We also explore what happens when you move from teaching into leadership. Because running a studio is not simply an extension of being a good teacher. It involves a different set of skills, a different relationship to responsibility, and a much broader perspective on what it means to support others.

This is not a conversation about titles or hierarchy.

It is about understanding the qualities that allow someone to grow — and where that growth often becomes more challenging than expected.

If you are somewhere along this path, whether you are considering teacher training, developing your teaching, or thinking about building something of your own, this episode offers a more honest look at what that progression actually involves.

We had a team education recently with Dr. Chelsea Pierotti, and there was one idea that really stuck with me afterwards.

    Control the controllables.

It sounds simple. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized how often we do the exact opposite — especially when we’re teaching or running a studio.

If you teach, you’ve probably had those moments where something just feels off. People aren’t responding the way you expected, the energy isn’t quite there, or something you planned isn’t landing. And almost immediately, your mind starts trying to fix everything at once.

That’s usually where it starts to go wrong.

In this episode, I talk about what it actually means to shift your focus back to what you can control — and how much that changes your experience in the room.

And the more I thought about it, the more I realized this doesn’t stop at teaching. It becomes even more important when you’re running a studio.

Because as an owner, it’s very easy to feel like everything is yours to manage. Your team, your clients, the business, the atmosphere… and at some point, that turns into trying to control things that you simply can’t.

Because it’s usually not the situation that creates the stress. It’s how we’re thinking about it.

    We’re back from FIBO.

After spending time inside one of the biggest fitness events in Europe, we wanted to sit down and talk through what actually stood out — not just what looked impressive in the moment, but what we think holds up once you step back into a real studio.

Because events like this can be exciting, but they can also be overwhelming. There’s a lot of energy, a lot of innovation, and a constant stream of things that promise to be the next big thing.

Some of it is genuinely interesting... and some of it, not so much.

In this episode, we’re sharing what we felt was thoughtful, what didn’t quite land for us, and how we’re making sense of it all after having a bit of distance from the noise.

We talk about the trends that seem to be growing, the areas where we think the industry is moving too fast, and where the human side of coaching still really matters.

If you’re a teacher or a studio owner, this is less about what you should copy, and more about how to think clearly when you’re exposed to so many ideas at once.

Because not everything that looks impressive at a big event translates into something meaningful in your day-to-day work.

Before FIBO: What We’re Looking For (And Questioning)

We’re heading back to FIBO this year, and before we go, we wanted to take a moment to talk through what we’re actually paying attention to this time around.

If you’ve ever been to something like FIBO, you know how overwhelming it can be. There’s so much happening at once — new ideas, new equipment, new concepts — and it’s very easy to get caught up in what looks exciting in the moment.

We felt that last year. There was a lot that was inspiring, but also a lot that made us pause and question what we were really looking at.

So this episode isn’t a recap, and it’s not about listing trends. It’s more about the lens we’re bringing with us this time.

We’re talking about what we’re hoping to find, what we’re a little more skeptical about, and how we try to filter all of that through the reality of teaching, working with real clients, and running a studio.

Because not everything that looks impressive actually translates into something meaningful long term.

And at the end of the day, that’s really the question we’re interested in — what actually holds up once you leave the event and come back into your own space?

We’ll come back after FIBO and share what we found, what surprised us, and what we’re still questioning.

If we were starting the studio again today, we wouldn’t necessarily do more. But, we would do things differently.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian reflect on the early days of building their studio — the decisions they made, the mistakes they learned from, and the clarity that only comes with time and experience.

Because building a studio is not just about programming, schedules, or growth.

It’s about creating something that is sustainable — for you and for your community.

If you’re a studio owner, thinking about opening a space, or somewhere in the middle of building something, this episode offers a more honest look at what that process can feel like — and what we would approach differently if we had the chance to begin again.

Part 1: Who Should Be Teaching Pilates Teachers?
A Conversation About Standards, Experience, and Responsibility in Pilates Education

The Pilates industry is growing — and with that growth comes an important question:

Who is qualified to teach teachers?

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian begin a necessary and honest conversation about standards in Pilates teacher training — and what it really means to step into an educational role.

Because teaching teachers is not simply the next step in a career.

    It carries responsibility.
It shapes how future instructors understand movement, bodies, and the people they will work with.

As more programs continue to appear, the line between teaching classes and educating teachers can become blurred. This raises important questions about experience, readiness, and the long-term impact on the industry as a whole.

This episode does not aim to give a final answer.

It is the beginning of a conversation — one that looks at responsibility, integrity, and the role each of us plays in shaping the future of Pilates education.

What actually makes a great Pilates class?

In this solo episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah shares a different way of thinking about teaching — one that moves beyond doing more, saying more, or knowing more.

Because the teachers with the fullest classes aren’t always the most technically advanced.

So what are they doing differently?

This episode explores the subtle shifts that change how your clients experience your class — from how you communicate, to how you hold the room, to the energy you bring as a teacher.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” but something is still missing, this episode will give you a new perspective.

Returning to teaching after a serious illness is not just a physical process. It is also emotional, psychological, and deeply personal.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah and Christian reflect on what it was really like for Christian to teach his first classes back in the studio after cancer treatment.

What did it feel like to stand in front of a room again?
    What fears came up?
And how do you navigate the quiet voice of imposter syndrome when your body and life have been through something significant?

This conversation is an honest look at the early days of returning to work — the uncertainty, the vulnerability, and the surprising ways that teaching and movement can reconnect us to ourselves.

    In this episode we discuss:

What it felt like to teach the first classes back in the studioThe fears and doubts that surfaced in those early momentsImposter syndrome and rebuilding confidence after illnessWhy sport and movement have taken on a deeper meaningThe role self-care now plays in daily lifeWhat returning to teaching can teach us about resilience

For teachers, studio owners, and anyone navigating a return to work after a difficult chapter, this episode offers a candid and human perspective on what that journey can look like.

In this episode of The Pilates Exchange, Hannah sits down with terrorism scholar Gülden Hennemann for a thoughtful conversation about how women’s bodies have historically been used as sites of power, symbolism, and control.

Across cultures and political systems, the regulation of women’s bodies — through reproduction, appearance, and social roles — has often played a central role in shaping authority and identity. But what does this mean for movement spaces today?

As Pilates teachers and studio owners, we work with bodies every day. That makes it especially important to understand the cultural narratives surrounding strength, autonomy, and embodiment.

    In this conversation we explore:

Why women’s bodies often become symbolic battlegrounds in political and ideological movementsHow narratives about “the ideal woman” reinforce social power structuresThe role of cultural pressures around clothing, appearance, and body normsThe connection between physical strength, embodiment, and personal agencyWhy movement spaces are not as neutral as we sometimes believeHow Pilates studios and fitness communities can foster autonomy rather than reinforce restrictive body narratives

This episode is not about partisan politics. It’s about understanding historical patterns and asking how movement teachers can create environments that support autonomy, dignity, and strength in the bodies we work with every day.
