  • Aaron Huey, founder of Parenting Teens That Struggle and host of the Beyond Risk and Back podcast brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, especially with the release of his new book, "The Four Prime Archetypes: Why We Do What We Do." Aaron's book delves into the fascinating world of personality profiling, breaking down human behavior into four archetypes: the Warrior, the Wizard, the Jester, and the Bard. This framework helps parents understand and support their children by recognizing their innate strengths and tendencies instead of trying to mold children into what we think they should be.

When it comes to power struggles with teenagers, Aaron explains that when parents confront their children's decision-making processes aggressively, it leads to defensive reactions. Instead, he advocates for a more supportive approach, allowing teens to experience the consequences of their actions unless it threatens their life and limb. This helps build trust and encourages teens to develop problem-solving skills of their own.

By managing their own emotions and stress, parents can approach situations with a clear mind and avoid reactive behavior that could escalate conflicts. Aaron shares that there are four key actions parents can take to mitigate risky behaviors. His insights are not only practical, they are deeply compassionate. He encourages parents to be allies to their children, supporting them through their unique journeys and helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence with understanding and empathy.

  • How can you raise children who understand and value healthy relationships in an era where social media often dictates norms and expectations? Karyn Youso, low-conflict divorce attorney, brings over three decades of experience to the table, offering a unique perspective that combines her professional expertise with her personal journey as a divorced mother of three.

She shares the challenges and lessons learned from both her practice and her parenting experience, emphasizing the critical need for early and ongoing conversations about relationships with our children. • TW: Mental Health, Codependency, Suicide

Kelly and Abigail White share their story about how they came through their darkest hour to offer a beacon of hope for others. Their story highlights the importance of the mother daughter bond, especially when it comes to mental health and healing.

In 2012 Abigail had a plan to end her life.

The only thing that stopped her was the thought of leaving her mother behind. Together, Kelly and Abigail navigated a difficult journey of self-discovery, healing and empowerment.

Abigail discusses her ability to mask her emotions and Kelly shares how her own struggles with mental health issues helped her to accept the reality of her daughter's experience.

We discuss how the first step in healing is often acceptance--accepting reality, each other and most importantly, ourselves. We also talk about what it looked like to work WITH their challenges as mother and daughter instead of fighting.

Kelly and Abigail remind us that progress is not linear and that learning and growth are often messy. Communication and understanding often doesn't come easily, and it's important to be willing to try and fail and try again to improve.

The story of this mother and daughter journey encourages us to look at our own relationships, make some intentional and powerful adjustments when it comes to communication and approach challenges with empathy, especially within close relationships.

If you've ever faced your own mental health crisis or supported someone else, this interview will remind you that you are stronger than you think, braver than you believe and not nearly as alone as you might feel.
