  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, I am going to give you 15 tips for memorizing Scripture. Memorizing Scripture is a spiritual discipline that offers huge rewards, yet many of us find it difficult to get into the habit. In my own life, memorizing the Bible has been the single-most practice that has yielded the highest fruit. There is something about hiding Godā€™s Word in our hearts that leads us to understand it in a deeper way. Itā€™s like the Spirit brings revelation as we memorize. Letā€™s talk about memorizing Scripture! So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and your spiral index cards and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word. • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are finishing our three-part mini-series on our identity in Christ. This series is called Who Am I: Conquering the Lies and Embracing the Truth. As Christians, our identity is in Christ alone. We need a biblical understanding of identity because if we donā€™t know who we are in Christ, the world is quick fill in the gaps for us. The problem is, who the world tells us we are, is not based on truth. In our time we are talking about nine lies we are tempted to believe about our identity and the corresponding truth we are invited to embrace. Our goal is to conquer the lies and embrace the truth. We want to expose our false notions of identity, understand biblical truths about our identity in Christ, and talk about what it looks like to live from this new identity. • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are launching a three-part mini-series on our identity in Christ. I am calling this series Who Am I: Conquering the Lies and Embracing the Truth. All of us struggle with identity at one time or another. We wrestle with who we are and what we are called to do. In certain seasons we allow roles to define us ā€“ roles like employee, wife, mother, friend, or sister. We can also allow where we live, how we serve in the church, where we vacation, our extended families or our college degree to define us. The problem with placing our identity in seasons of life or in roles, is that when that season ends or when the role is not as successful as we would like, we find ourselves floundering. Who am I really? We need something much more stable - something unchanging - to place our identities in. As Christians, our identity is in Christ alone. We need a biblical understanding of identity because if we donā€™t know who we are in Christ, the world is quick fill in the gaps for us. The problem is, who the world tells us we are, is not based on truth. In our time together over the next three episodes, we are going to talk about nine lies we are tempted to believe about our identity and the corresponding truth we are invited to embrace. Our goal is to conquer the lies and embrace the truth. We want to expose our false notions of identity, understand biblical truths about our identity in Christ, and talk about what it looks like to live from this new identity. So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and get ready to take a good long look in the mirror and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word. • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to talk about Godā€™s desire to make all things new.

We all have seasons where there are areas of our lives that feel stagnant, stale, old, tired or lifeless. In those seasons we desperately need God to do something new. We need His life-giving power, His renewing miraculous works, His reinvigorating presence. Our God can breathe fresh life into dead places. He is able to create something out of nothing.

So as we look out over the valley of dry bones in our lives, so to speak, and ask the same question Ezekiel asked, ā€œCan these bones live?ā€ we can answer with confidence, ā€œYes!ā€ The Spirit of God is in the process of making all things new.

But we need to actively, intentionally, expectantly look for the new things God is doing in and around us. Training our eyes and ears and hearts and minds to look for Godā€™s goodness brings hope.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and get ready to embrace the new and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are finishing our four-part series on surrender, an essential, yet not always easy, part of the Christian life.

Did you know there are different levels of surrender, all of which affect our relationship with God? Initial surrender to Christ leads to salvation. But there are times of greater surrender during our lives that bring deeper intimacy with God and greater effectiveness in service. The more areas of our lives we surrender to Him, the more room there is for the filling of the Holy Spirit.

In this episode we discuss the blessings that come with surrender. We lay everything down in surrender as an act of faith, but God doesnā€™t leave us in that place. We lay everything down to gain infinitely more. He blesses us beyond our wildest imaginations.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and get ready for the wonder of the blessings of surrender and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word.

God demands that we surrender our whole selves to Him - our time, our money, our abilities, our plans, our homes, our stuff, our futures, the people we love the most. We lay all of these things at His feet, trusting that He knows best.

In this episode we are going to search the scriptures for examples of people who surrendered their lives to Christ. And then we will talk about the One who is our greatest example of surrender. Can you guess who that is?

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are kicking off a four-part series on surrender, an essential, yet not always easy, part of the Christian life.

Surrender is a battle term. It implies giving up all rights to the conqueror. When an army surrenders, they lay down their weapons, and the winning army takes control. Surrendering to God works the same way. God has a plan for our lives, and surrendering to Him means we set aside our own plans and fully seek His. The good news is that Godā€™s plan for us is always for our good and His glory, unlike our own plans that often lead to destruction. We surrender to a God who delights in blessing us.

In this episode I will share a story of a missionary who literally surrendered her whole life to the call of Jesus. And then we will talk about what it means to renounce our rights.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and get ready to lay down your best plans and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are finishing our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King. Todayā€™s episode will cover Isaiah 64-66.

As believers, we look forward to the new heavens and the new earth, which the book of Revelation describes in detail. But did you know that Isaiah also talks about the new heavens and the new earth at the end of his book? This eternal state was spoken of way back in the Old Testament.

These last chapters contain one of my favourite verses about God looking to the one who trembles at His Word. As we finish this amazing prophetic book, I trust that you too tremble at the awesomeness of Godā€™s Word.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King.

Today we will be hanging out in Isaiah 59-63, which contains some pretty amazing truths as well as some very sobering ones. Isaiah talks about Zion, the future glorious city of God where God will dwell with His people. But he also talks about the day of vengeance, a terrifying day in which Godā€™s wrath is poured out on His enemies.

We will also talk about one of the most important commas in all of Scripture, and how you and I are living in that comma. Who knew punctuation was so important?!

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King.

Today we will be hanging out in Isaiah 54-58, and they are such rich chapters. We will be talking about why we often turn to the things of this world for satisfaction and fulfillment, and how our gracious God invites us to find true satisfaction in Him alone.

We will also be talking about the kind of worship God desires. He sees right through our outward empty religious activities straight into our hearts. He longs for hearts that are fully surrendered to Him, fully engaged in worship. When we live this way, we find our greatest joy in His presence.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King.

Isaiah 49-53 contains many prophecies of the Messiah, who is called the Servant of the Lord. We get a peek into His ministry and mission and how He came to suffer on our behalf.

These chapters also highlight what it means for us to be servants of the Lord. The New Testament uses the word ā€œbondservantsā€, and we will explore what this word means and what this posture looks like in the life of a believer.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah, using my brand-new Bible study called A Coming King.

In our passage today, we are brought face-to-face with our ongoing tendency to turn created things into idols. You see, we were made to worship, and if we donā€™t worship the God of the universe, we will inevitably worship something or someone else. If not submitted to Christ, our hearts become little idol factories. Certainly, idols in our day are far more sophisticated and sneaky than the ancient wooden statue versions, but they are no less present. You and I must learn how to recognize and eradicate idols from our hearts. I am going to share four tests we can use to determine if something has reached idol status in our lives.

We also talk about the Babylonian mentality in this episode. This ancient way of thinking has invaded our culture, and you may be surprised to find it has made its way into your thinking as well.

So, be warned, this episode is nothing short of convicting. Iā€™m betting the Holy Spirit will step all over your toes as He has been doing with me, all with the view of making us more like Christ.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are starting our brand new Bible study called A Coming King, which is on the second part of Isaiah, chapters 40-66.

Isaiah is one of the richest books in the Bible, filled with messages about Godā€™s sovereignty and majesty, prophecies of the Messiah (Jesus is all over this book!), and promises of comfort, restoration and redemption. It's SO good! And this second half is even better than the first!

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to talk about how to set goals for a new year.

I absolutely LOVE the freshness of a new year, with the weeks and months spread before us like a blank slate, brimming with possibility. I make it an annual practice to sit with the Lord to hear from Him and create some goals together for the coming year.

Now Iā€™m fully aware that there are some people whose eyes brighten when they hear the word ā€˜goalsā€™ and there are others who experience that sinking feeling at the mere thought of crafting goals, and of course there are many people in between.

Regardless of where you are on that continuum, having an idea of where you are headed is always helpful in getting there. If we donā€™t know what we are working towards, we may wander aimlessly, wasting time and energy on things that donā€™t help us get to where we want to be. Goals help us move towards the destination.

I absolutely love goal-setting and designing my days around intentional movement towards those goals, and on this podcast episode, Iā€™m going to share with you how I set goals for a new year.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and all your goals and join me on the pages of Godā€™s Word.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 34-39, which is week 7 in your study called A Holy God. This is our last week in this study! And there is a bit of a surprise in the last few chapters of the first part of Isaiah. After 35 chapters of poetry, we stumble across historical narrative. Isaiah tells the story of King Hezekiah during the time when the Assyrians were coming against Jerusalem. Hezekiahā€™s story of his enemy seeking to destroy the city has much to teach us about the strategies of our enemy as he seeks to destroy us. When your faith is being attacked, you can follow the example of Hezekiah in running to your God and standing firm on His promises.

  • During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 29-33, which is week 6 in your study called A Holy God. When we read through the story of Israel in the Old Testament, we often shake our heads at how rebellious and unbelieving they were. That is, until we realize that we are not much different. We too can fall into empty religion and complacency, and we too can misplace our trust. Israelā€™s story is our story. Letā€™s chat about how to avoid these spiritual pitfalls and instead learn to trust in and wait on God.
