  • On this week's show Louise is joined by Professor Gary Mortimer from QUT and Research Fellow Kim Borg from Monash University.

COVID-19 has turbocharged the shift to online shopping.
Last week Louise published an article in The Conversation, co-authored with Professor Gary Mortimer, Associate Professor Jana Bowden, Dr Jason Pallant and Professor Martin Grimmer, about the impact of COVID-19 on accelerating moves towards automation in retailing. Read the article: COVID-19 has changed the future of retail: there’s plenty more automation in store

On this week's show Louise chats with the article's lead author Professor Gary Mortimer from QUT about online shopping, automation, smaller stores and re-purposing shopping centres, and, if you don't already know what a 'dark store' is, tune in this week to find out!

We were doing really well in avoiding single-use plastic, and then along came COVID-19. Find out how we can return to those good habits.
Louise chats with Research Fellow Kim Borg from Monash University about her latest research examining how COVID-19 has impacted on the good habits we were engaged in reducing single-use plastics.

But then COVID-19 changed the game. Since the pandemic started, there has been a significant increase in plastic waste, such as medical waste from protective equipment such as masks, gloves and gowns, and increased purchases of sanitary products such as disposable wipes and liquid soap.

The good news is we can return to our plastic-avoiding habits. It just might look a little a different.

You can read Kim's latest article in The Conversation: Avoiding single-use plastic was becoming normal, until coronavirus. Here’s how we can return to good habits

Jason is Lecturer in Marketing at Swinburne University of Technology with a special interest in shopping centres, shopping malls and department stores.

  • What's better than one special guest? Two, of course!

This week Louise is joined by Dr Jason Pallant, Lecturer in Marketing at Swinburne University of Technology. Jason is a retail expert with a special interest in shopping centres, shopping malls and department stores. Jason and Louise discuss the impact of Covid19 on retailing, measures shopping centres are taking to attract customers and what the future holds.

And our other special guest this week is Dr Paula Dootson, Senior Lecturer in Digital Economy at Queensland University of Technology. Paula and Professor Gary Mortimer have written a really interesting article in The Conversation about new strategies being introduced in retailing to combat consumer theft. Supermarkets are taking the lead and using self-surveillance techniques including something called 'self-reflection' at the self-serve checkout. Tune in to find out what this means for retailers and shoppers.

  • Using Street Space

With lockdown restrictions lifting around the country, many of us are heading back out to eat, drink and enjoy socialising with friends.

Thanks to Covid19 our local bars, cafes and restaurants now face a really tough ask – they can open their doors but only for a fraction of the customers. This seems like an impossible task but this week's special guest Thami Croeser has some really interesting ideas for how traders can find new ways to expand their space or seat their patrons.

Thami Croeser is an urban planner and spatial analyst in the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University. He is currently part of an international project team advising the European Union on planning for urban greening. Over the next three years Thami will facilitate the development of greening plans for eight cities around the world.

We discuss his recent article in The Conversation about how we could use street space to help the retail and hospitality industries meet some of the re-opening challenges brought about by the easing of Covid19 restrictions.

    Private Label Products

Do you love them, or do you loathe them? However you feel about them, there's no doubt you can expect to see more of them in your local supermarket. Louise takes a look at the reason behind the growth of private labels, and the benefits and downsides of PL expansion in the Australian retail industry.

You can read more about this topic in this article in The Conversation written by Professor Gary Mortimer from QUT and Dr Louise Grimmer from UTAS. Enjoy!

Plus the weekly retail news roundup.
