In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I am joined by Baz Melia from the Always a Rifleman Programme to discuss the realities of military mental health, life after service, and the power of community.

Baz explains why “reaching in” matters more than “reaching out,” how early intervention can save lives, and why veterans often need support that understands military culture.

Our conversation also explores the need to rebuild belonging after service, the importance of peer networks, and the launch of the The Riflemen’s Association as a way to connect Riflemen with each other long after their boots have been hung up.

The Always a Rifleman Programme is part of RIFLES Regimental Headquarters and exists to help members of our Regimental family when they are in crisis. Here’s a link to the website if you’d like to know more: https://theriflesnetwork.co.uk/page/aarp

We mentioned The Rifleman’s Family Gala Dinner at Silverstone on 5 September. The following link is only accessible to Riflemen who are members of Swift. If you aren’t a member, you can join via the link (it’s free to join Swift, the RIFLES Network), but if you don’t want to but would still like to hear more about it, feel free to drop me an email: https://theriflesnetwork.co.uk/networks/events/205394

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I reconnect with coach Anna Keeble to explore her new guided audio series, The Way Home.

We discuss how teens and adults can learn to trust their own inner wisdom, tune out “noise,” and take the next right step without needing a perfect map. Anna shares how the programme was shaped by feedback from teens, including its calming, insightful impact on school stress, exams, and parent-child conversations.

Our conversation also reflects on the power of space, reflection, and seeing wholeness in others.

What if the very things you think disqualify you from serving others are actually the ingredients that make your contribution priceless?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I’m rejoined by my friend Jacqueline “Mama J” Hollows to explore closing a beloved social enterprise, starting again, and trusting life’s nudges into new roles, including her trusteeship with A Band of Brothers.

We talk about supporting changemakers to be both deeply impactful and properly paid, the unseen ripple effects of small acts like prison letter-writing, and why nothing you’ve lived is ever wasted.

Jacqueline shares how letting go of “the prison lady” identity revealed a fuller, braver version of herself, and why being all of you is the greatest service you can offer.

I’d love to know: where in your own life are you being nudged to show up more fully as yourself, even if you don’t yet know how it will all unfold?

Do you ever stop to ask the one big question your leadership is avoiding – and what might be possible if you dared to be different?

In the latest episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I sit down with Louise Edwards, founder of Bold Space Coaching, to explore how imagination, “creative conflict,” and truly human leadership can transform teams, culture and results in an age of constant change.

Louise shares how her background in design and IKEA leadership shaped her belief that growth starts with holding honest space, rattling the cage “with love,” and moving from A-to-not-A instead of endlessly repeating what’s always worked, especially when we dare to be different in how we lead and what we prioritise.

Louise is a leadership and creative strategy coach and the owner of Bold Space Coaching, helping leaders and teams build braver, more imaginative and more human workplaces.

I’d love to know: what’s the big question you’re not asking yourself or your team right now—and what might change if you dared to be different?

What if every apparent failure in your life was actually a disguised invitation to reinvent yourself and serve more deeply?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I sit down with legendary coach and author Steve Chandler to explore how “failing forward,” curiosity, and genuine conversation can transform our experience of life and work.

We talk about moving from outside-in struggle to an inside-out understanding, the freedom of seeing that there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with us, and the quiet power of simply being with another human in a world addicted to distraction.

Steve also shares how, even at 81 and semi-retired, he still feels he’s barely scratching the surface of what coaching and conversation can do.

I’d love to know: where in your own life are you being invited to reinvent yourself, and what might become possible if you met that with open curiosity?

If you knew resilience had your back 100% of the time, what would you dare to do differently?

In this solo episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I share what might be my most technically challenging recording yet, and how “take five” became a live example of resilience in action. I talk about resilience as the part of us that never quits – something baked into who we are, not a skill we have to build from scratch – and how we often only notice it in hindsight when we look back at what we’ve already come through.

I also introduce some keys to how we can help each other, so we can see what’s fresh in each moment rather than relying solely on what we think we already know.

I’d love to know: if you truly trusted that you’re designed to thrive, that resilience always had your back, what would you stop worrying about and step into instead?

What if leadership was less about having the answers and more about showing up with curiosity, love and a willingness to learn alongside the people you serve?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, Melissa Ford and I explore how leadership is the engine behind service, and why dropping the need to be the expert can open the door to deeper impact, softer armour and more honest, human conversations. [with a not so gentle nod to the Sandhurst motto…]

We talk about becoming more coachable, leading without needing to control outcomes, and the freedom that comes from trusting others – whether that’s clients, teams or grown-up children moving to the other side of the world.

I’d love to know: where in your own life are you being invited to trade worry for wonder, and what might become possible if you did?

What if loneliness was not a personal failing, but a quiet invitation to reconnect with your own wisdom and with others?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, my conversation with Dave Nichols and Nate More from Feel the Vibe explores how simple human connection can ease suffering without adding more labels, language, or “fixing” to the mix. Feel the Vibe is less an organisation and more an invitation: an open space for people to feel their own aliveness, value, and possibility through relationship, whether one-to-one, in small groups, or across whole communities.

Dave and Nate share how their work in Charlotte, North Carolina, focuses on younger adults experiencing chronic loneliness, anxiety, and disconnection, not by talking “mental health” or Three Principles jargon, but by meeting people where they are and listening deeply. Through intimate weekly connection circles, collaborations with local organisations, and emerging intergenerational projects that pair young adults with elders, they create safe, informal spaces where people surprise themselves with what they share and discover within.

Dave describes their non-profit structure as “enabling, not solidifying” — the real method is curiosity, deep listening, and allowing new forms of connection (from discussion groups to movement and dance) to emerge from the people themselves.

When have you felt most “seen” by someone’s simple, curious presence, and what did that allow you to realise about yourself?

What if pain, in all its forms, was not a sign that you’re broken, but a deeply intelligent signal inviting you back into life, as it is, right now?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I am joined by psychotherapist, Three Principles-based mentor and coach, Jenny Gaitelband, to explore how a deeper understanding of the mind can bring comfort, beauty and hope even in the harshest of human experiences.

From war, loss and Post Traumatic Stress, to everyday anxiety about work, money and relationships, Jenny shares how seeing the principles behind experience has transformed her practice, her parenting, her marriage and her relationship with her own history.

Together, Jenny and I reflect on the shift from trying to fix what is “broken” in people’s pasts, to becoming genuinely curious about what someone longs to create now – their “soul wish” – and how life is constantly nudging us through feeling, like checking a heat spot in your boots before a blister develops.

We talk about befriending reality, allowing pain to move through when there is safety, and recognising that everyone is a perpetual work in progress, equipped with the same creative capacity to meet whatever life brings, one conversation at a time.

A question to sit with: Where in your life might you be resisting what is, and what becomes possible if you relate to your pain as an intelligent guide rather than a problem to eliminate?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I’m joined by Prince Jimmar for a conversation that delves into the roots of motivation and asks, “How can we be of true service to those around us, and why do we show up the way we do?”

Prince is a co-founder and Executive Director of Rebels for Peace, a community organisation in South Chicago. The Rebels for Peace's mission is to uncover the next generation of leaders and bring relatable, sustainable, and transformational mental health programs to youth in underserved communities.

Together, we explore how our drive to help others is often intertwined with personal growth, learning, and an openness to understanding different perspectives. Prince shares stories about finding purpose beyond personal achievement, highlighting how genuine connection and humble curiosity create lasting impact and allow us to embrace life as a continual work in progress.

Prince is an inspiring voice in his community, known for combining creativity and resilience as he navigates challenges, leadership, and everyday decisions. His unique approach centres on leading with empathy and embracing one’s journey with radical honesty – never pretending to have all the answers, but instead listening deeply and allowing others to shine.

So, when was the last time you stepped into a situation without needing to be ‘the expert,’ and found yourself learning something unexpected? What did you discover by letting go of your assumptions and simply showing up for others?

What if being truly heard is the most powerful form of resilience?

In the latest episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast I’m joined my Marie Arymar, a resilience and clarity coach from Exeter. Marie is also the author of “Do You Want to Know a Secret?”, and the host of the Precarious Parenting podcast, sharing insights from coaching families and women navigating life transitions.

The episode centres on resilience and the transformative power of being heard. Marie shares her journey from education to coaching and her work helping mums and families navigate life with warmth, curiosity, and practical wisdom.

Through candid stories from her years in pastoral roles and her book Do You Want to Know a Secret?, the conversation reveals how one‑to‑one listening can uncover inner strengths that often go unseen when pressures mount—whether in schools, at home, or in personal change.

A guiding thread throughout is the stance of curiosity over judgment—asking “I wonder…” to open conversations, reduce blame, and invite new possibilities. Marie also discusses ongoing work with women, menopause, and the idea that gathering wisdom across generations creates a healthier, more resilient ecosystem for families.

Do you ever pause to consider how the desire for genuine connection guides your work and interactions?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, Nikon Gormley joins me for an honest exploration of authenticity, intuition, and the courage to serve others – not from a place of perfection, but with genuine presence and curiosity.

Our conversation circles around the idea that being “in service” isn’t just about expert advice or polished answers but about embracing moments of uncertainty and leading with honesty. Nikon, a seasoned facilitator and coach, shares his journey from structured roles in leadership training to a place where intuition and vulnerability shape every engagement. Together, we reflect on the subtle invitations we offer to others: to slow down, ask better questions, and trust that stepping into the unknown often brings the deepest learning.

Have you ever found yourself letting go of your own expertise to lean into active listening or open-ended curiosity? What did you discover about yourself or the connection in that moment?

When was the last time you caught yourself sitting in the unknown, letting curiosity – not certainty – guide a conversation?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I’m joined by Eirik Olsen, The Co-founder and Executive Director of One Solution. I love Eirik’s approach to growth, it feels refreshingly real. Our conversation drifts into what it actually means to show up for others, to be of service while staying true to our own evolution. There’s no “final version” of any of us here; we’re each a work in progress, and Eirik has a gentle way of making it feel like that’s not just okay, but a gift.

We peel back the layers on authenticity – not just as a concept, but as a practice you return to, especially when the path gets foggy. Eirik shares stories from his own journey, moments when humility and openness made all the difference, and how questioning our assumptions (even the ones we didn’t know we had) keeps life interesting. Our conversation reminded me how staying grounded and willing to learn is where real service – and real connection – begin.

So, when have you put aside what you thought you knew and let curiosity carry you forward? What did you see, or learn, that surprised you along the way?

When was the last time you allowed yourself to drift gently into a conversation, suspending all assumptions and seeing where it might take you?

In this episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I’m joined by Trevor Timbeck, a leadership coach from London, Ontario, and co-author (with Steve Chandler) of "The Power of Systems" and "The Power of Love."

Trevor shares the genesis of his collaboration with Steve, the playful back-and-forth “system” that shaped their writing process, and how the act of slowing down and reflecting—rather than defending or rushing—creates space for new possibilities.

We explore how writing these books has shifted Trevor’s approach to life and coaching, moving from a strict search for “the right answer” to a more relational, present, and love-driven way of being. Inspired by thinkers like David Bohm and Humberto Maturana, Trevor speaks to the impact of dialogue, the creative act of “talking to dead people” via AI, and the audacity to be offbeat or “go off the rails” in creative projects. Whether in military or corporate settings, we reflect on the hidden power of love, legitimacy, and playfulness—even in serious work.

When have you noticed deeper connection or insight arising from ‘drifting’ in dialogue without a fixed destination? What new systems or creative practices have helped you see things differently?

How does healing happen when we invite curiosity and wonder into our lives—alongside medical wisdom?

In this episode, Dr Rani Bora – a holistic psychiatrist, coach, and author – joins me to bridge the worlds of medicine and spirituality. We talk about being a “spiritual medic” and how honouring the soul, not just the body and mind, opens new pathways for genuine transformation.

Rani shares candidly about her journey from traditional medicine through coaching, the limitations of an evidence-only approach, and the powerful results she’s witnessed by including the spiritual dimension. Together, we explore the importance of safe, non-judgmental spaces and the ripple effects of support, curiosity, and shared stories – especially for those who might otherwise slip through the cracks in our mental health system.

    Key themes:

Finding healing through curiosity and childlike wonder, both for practitioners and those they serveThe value of peer support, community, and empowering individuals to own their experiencesRecognising that at a spiritual level, no one is truly broken—no matter the life challenges

Rani also previews a new community project launching in September, focused on life coaching and holistic support, created with care by herself and her husband, Dr Suraj Gogoi, both holistic psychiatrists.

I’d love to know, when was the last time you let curiosity or wonder shift your perspective—especially when things were hard? What did you notice or learn from the experience?

Have you ever wondered what truly matters when time grows short—and how to welcome the present, however uncertain?

In this powerful episode of the Simple Reflections Podcast, I reconnect with my dear friend Rachel Furman from Los Angeles. Rachel joins me in the final weeks of her life to speak openly about facing the end with calm, courage, and acceptance. Her refusal to equate pain with suffering stands out: “Suffering is optional.” Through a deep acceptance of her circumstances and a focus on what’s possible each day, Rachel offers a model for resilience and grace.

Rachel shares how she turned her final years into opportunities for adventure – traveling, dancing, focusing on what brings her joy, and maintaining her independence and humour in her relationships, even with her medical team. Her wisdom about acceptance and letting go shines: “We are not in control of most things, but the less we resist, the easier it becomes.”

Rachel’s wish is that her story might help even one person. She reminds us, “As long as you’re here, have fun, love, enjoy… there’s no reason to be upset about stuff.”

What allows you to find peace or joy, despite difficult circumstances?

    Let us know your reflections.
