  • Before the tomato-ssance, there was Flamingo Estate. Richard Christiansen's humble Los Angeles farm is where the vegetal scent trend gained the luxury home reputation. His home, place of work, and brand has quickly made a name for itself in all things farm-to-credenza, agriculture awareness, farmer-friendly, and salt (and herb, and flower, and vine) of the earth. Christiansen chats to us about the COVID-driven collapse of his creative agency that led to his rebirth as a farmer, the importance of ritual and ceremony, and how he personally texts and calls Flamingo Estate's top customers every week (if that's you, please text him back, it's not a bot, we swear!).

In this episode we speak with founders and shopkeeps, Jake & Matt Belanger about how they built the shop, the fragrance community, the difference between concepts and notes, and what makes a really good smell.

  • Imagine only being able to make a perfume when the raw materials are in peak season. That's how April Gargiulo developed Understory, the singular perfume oil from her brand Vintner's Daughter. A year after its original launch, it's back again—round 2—with some slightly evolved aromatic tweaks. This is how a winemaker creates a perfume oil.

We discuss: Sable's Die Hot With A Vengeance perfume launch event at Stèle. Why do They (Big Fragrance) keep trying to make perfume layering happen? Byredo 1996 is allegedly coming back. What fragrances belong in a museum? Perfume snobbery. The ideal time to have sex. The impending 'beauty is horror' cultural genre. What brands are banned from the pod. And much more...

  • Here's a one-off special, a minor departure, a host-turned-guest episode where Tynan interviews Sable about her debut essay collection Die Hot With A Vengeance. We cover the process of the book deal, the writing of the book, the convoluted nature of our current beauty culture and the precarious positions we find ourselves in for its pursuit, and (almost) everything you'd want to know about the book of the summer — because it's officially out today!

You can also find the perfume made for the book of the same name here, which we covered in a previous episode.

Boy Smells candle, how a brand's signature scent is its strongest leverage, and how the fragrance You is the dangling carrot in the Glossier buyout rumors.

  • Juliette Has A Gun's founder Romano Ricci may be more of a Mercutio in the Shakespeare-coded and metaphorical world of this episode. With Not A Perfume, Anyway..., Mmmm..., Ode To Dullness, and others, Juliette Has A Gun has undone haute parfumerie's formalities and proven that levity can be luxury as well. We speak with Ricci about the risk of launching an unserious fragrance brand in the height of mid-aughts fragrance culture, his roots in fragrance and fashion legacy, and how fragrance can be invisible armor.

  • Spring is canonically a season of bare knees, vitamin D-derived dopamine, crushes, and for many, the expiration of their winter and fall cuffs. An uncuffing season, if you will. In this yap-centric episode, we cover some of our foolproof 'get back out there' scents, and a whole lot of other scent-adjacent behaviors that put the sprung in spring.

  • Oh, you like gourmands? Name five flavors. Le Monde Gourmand can give you dozens more than that. We have Ann Somma, chief brand officer of Tru Fragrance & Beauty to chat behind the makings of your favorite retailers' fragrances (American Eagle, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Wrangler Jeans...) and how one of those secret fragrances seen only in Urban Outfitters stores struck out to become its very own brand, now jumping to bigger retailers like Ulta, and developing its own following on social media with cute, edible (and French-sounding), and collectible scents.

  • Are seasonal scents over? According to the culture (and the media that informs the culture) ... probably, yes. Now that perfume trends run more on a fast fashion current, more frequently birthed by immaculate consumption and tied to some Pinterest aesthetic group devoid of context, fragrance may be freed from another one of its strongest categories (other than gender). So, how will we navigate fragrance if not through seasons, genders, and micro-trends? Time will tell!
