In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, we're diving into a topic that might seem a little bit unexpected, but could completely change how you support your child with ADHD, and that is oral health. Joining us for this episode is Dr. Derek Gatta.
Dr. Gatta is a dentist and co-founder of RiseWell, a science-backed oral care brand thatâs revolutionizing the industry with its non-toxic, dentist-formulated products. After realizing that most toothpaste on the market contains toxic ingredients, he teamed up with his sister and brother-in-law to create RiseWell, which uses ingredients like hydroxyapatite, a natural alternative thatâs both safe and effective.
As the head of the scientific council at RiseWell, Dr. Gatta leads the search for the healthiest and cleanest ingredients, raising the bar for quality and purity in oral care. Heâs not only an expert in the field, but heâs passionate about helping people achieve optimal oral health, which is so vital for overall well-beingâespecially for kids with ADHD.
If youâve ever wondered how your childâs toothpaste could be playing a role in their ADHD symptoms, you do NOT want to miss this episode.

[30:34] Is red light therapy safe?Memorable Moments:
"Red light therapy is âa very popular topic right now, but thereâs a lot of misunderstanding about it.ââWe need to start off by talking about what sunlight actually is.â
âRed light therapy specifically would be the application of red, near infrared or both red and near infrared light for the purpose of influencing biology.â
âRed light therapy is going to work on us on a cellular level.â
âWe have major problems with mitochondrial function. And so when you look at the literature for kids with ADHD, adolescents, adults, itâs pretty clear at this point that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with the pathology of ADHD. So in theory, something like red light therapy that comes in and helps to support that mitochondrial function could be expected to have a positive effect on the condition.â
âWe have this horrible situation that so many people are unaware of and participating in without even knowing it whereby we are exposing our kids to bright lights at night...The exposure to the bright light at night and the blue light shifts that circadian rhythm by about 2 hours.â
â20 minutes for head, 20 minutes for gut, thatâs an ideal length of time...Once a day is perfect. But you can also see benefits in literature of 3X a week, 4X a week, 5X a week, 7X a weekâŠI would recommend anywhere from 3-7. What we donât recommend is doubling up and doing the same body part twice in one day.â

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is a superhero therapy that combines simple exercises and techniques to help kids with everything from their speech to their eating habits to their behavior.
But how do you know if your child could benefit from this therapy? What exactly is OMT? What does a session look like? In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, learn more about Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, or OMT, from special guest Dr. Marielly Michell.
Dr. Mitchellâs innovative approach to OT centered on orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) combines principles of cranial nerve integration, sensory processing, and motor function, allowing her to address neurological and airway dysfunction in infants and children that impact behavior.
She is the founder of Theraplay LA, the first pediatric therapy center to offer comprehensive services that include sleep monitoring in conjunction with virtual and in-clinic occupational, physical, and speech therapy services specializing in sensory processing, motor skills, feeding and swallowing disorders, OMT, nutritional support, and sleep training.

"Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (which we will refer to as OMT)focuses onâŠthe position of the tongue and where that person puts their tongue. And ideally, everyone should be placing their tongue suctioned to the roof of their mouth behind their 2 front teeth, with their lips sealed and breathing through their nose without tension in their jaw.ââIf your child has a low oral rest postureâŠbasically mouth breathing, then that automatically puts them into a state of fight or flight.â
âWhen a child is mouth breathing for a long period of time, it will deactivate that area of the brain, and so myofunctional therapy really focuses on facilitating a closed mouth posture and activating the nasal passages and making sure that the person reaches a more ârest and digestâ or parasympathetic state.â
âBreathing and sleeping really take a huge toll, and itâs really an abstract silent epidemic that weâre in with this.â
âA really good tip is to always do these exercises in front of a mirror with them so they can get some visual feedback.â
âWeâre in a silent epidemic of this.â

"The transformation was remarkable. Those intense symptoms actually began to subside, and their child started to thrive."
"Water is essential for every function in our body; it's clear that the quality of water we consume is of utmost importance."
"We learned firsthand that the way the water tastes tells you nothing about the health effects."
"There are endless chemicals in our environment, and when looking at the ones that impact us through tap water, it's important to know if they are harmful."
"Most people donât realize that contaminants like lead, arsenic, and PFAs can be present in drinking water without any taste or smell."
"If you do find contaminants in your water, it doesn't need to be like âOh my gosh, the world's going to end,' but itâs very controllable."
"Run your tap water in the morning for a couple of minutes, and you'll get fresher water that has spent less time in contact with your home's plumbing."
"About 30 to 35% of our water tests come back with a result indicating something you might want to address."

What is Buteyko breathing? How can Buteyko breathing support kids with ADHD? How long does it take after beginning a practice of Buteyko breathing to see improvements?
In this weekâs episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Miles Nichols joins the show to tell us all about Buteyko breathing. Dr. Miles Nichols is a functional medicine doctor specializing in Lyme, mold illness, gut, thyroid, and autoimmunity. After Dr. Miles personally struggled with chronic fatigue in his early 20âs, he dedicated himself to figure out the root causes. He suffered with and recovered from thyroid dysfunction, autoimmunity, a gut infection, Lyme co-infections, and mold illness.
Dr. Miles has authored two books. He founded the Medicine with Heart functional medicine clinic in Colorado as well as the Medicine with Heart Institute that trains other doctors in functional medicine.

âI really wish I had this tool back then because we know now, thereâs data and thereâs peer reviewed clinical trials, that we can really improve asthmaâŠâ
âIf I knew back then that CO2 was so important to bronchial dilationâŠif I had known back then that I could simply hold my breath and breathe less and have my bronchial dilation improve and I could actually start to get air again during that acute episode, I may not have had to go to the hospitalâŠâ
âCarbon dioxide does act as a vehicle to produce nitric oxide in the sinuses, and nitric oxide is one of the things that the lungs use to bronco-dilate.â
âCarbon dioxide is directly related to this breathing technique, and itâs directly related to what I would say is the underpinnings of a lot of problems in children and adults today.â
âWhen it comes to ADHD, that nervous system is incredibly important, and this chronic sympathetic activation can be problematic.â
âWe want to reduce the minute volume of air into the lungs.â
âLight, slow, deep breathing is a very basic technique that will help to be able to increase the amount of CO2, or carbon dioxideâŠâ
âNot only is this safe for children, but thereâs also been data collected thatâs shown improvements on things like asthma for childrenâŠ.We do see the capacity to regain function in an incredible way.â
âThe goal is to feel this tolerable âair hungerâ where youâre still calm. When you start to notice your heart rate increasing, thatâs a sign to back off a little bit.â
âFor most people, between 5 to maybe 8 breaths per minute for most people is going to be a rate for most people where we see heart rate variability.â
âFor children as a starting point, itâs great to make it into a game and to do it together.â
âSometimes as little as 4-6 weeks is enough to retrain the brain for base level breathing.â
âWithin 1-3 months, we are seeing significant shifts if there is regular training.â

As parents, we're always monitoring our children's habits and health, but we might not realize how much we can learn from their poop. The color, consistency, and frequency of your child's bowel movements can provide important clues about their digestive health, nutrient absorption, and even potential food sensitivities.
In this episode, we'll discuss what to look for in your child's stool, when to be concerned, and how you can support their digestive health naturally. Weâll also talk about the connection between gut health and brain function and offer practical strategies you can put into place today to help your child thrive.

âThe color, consistency, and frequency of your child's bowel movements can provide important clues about their digestive health, nutrient absorption, and even potential food sensitivities.â
âThe Bristol Stool Chart or Bristol Stool Scale is a medical aid designed to classify feces into seven groups.â
âOur brains are deeply connected to our guts. If our guts arenât functioning well, our brains wonât be able to function well either. ADHD symptoms can become worse when the gut isnât functioning properly.â
âA few at-home things you can do to improve slow transit time include: drinking more water, eating foods that are rich in fiber, exercising more, and working to improve the diet (eating more whole, nutrient-dense foods and healthy fats and eating less processed foods). Magnesium citrate can also be beneficial.â
âFor many children with ADHD, persistent poo and gut problems are caused by leaky gut.â
âLeaky gut is one of the most common underlying stressors that I see in families that I work with. Thatâs because there is a very close connection between the gut and the brain. One of the first signs of a disconnect in the brain is a gut that is not functioning well, that is because of the 2-way communication between the two.â
âDid you know that the gut is also responsible for making 70 - 90% of our serotonin and 50% of our dopamine which are our happy, feel-good neurotransmitters⊠in our body that helps regulate our emotions?â
âWhen it comes to supplementation there is no âone size fits allâ approach. Supplementation should be tailored to each individual in order to address specific healing opportunities, provide support, and make up for poor food quality.â

âThe number one thing that I did was I focused on the food that he can eat. I did not focus on the foods that he canât eat.â
âIf youâre skeptical but then you saw âDana Kayâ on Facebook or you saw âADHD Thrive Institute,â itâs a good sign. Take it as a good sign because this is help that the universe is sending to youâŠI wish I had delved into it right away.â
âIf you are skeptical, try it. Thereâs nothing to loseâŠItâs an investment in your child. Itâs an investment in their bodyâŠThey will feel better and theyâre going to tell you.â

What is dopamine?
How does it affect ADHD symptoms?
What types of things can affect dopamine levels in the body?
In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Miles Nichols joins the show and dives deep into how dopamine functions in the body and the impact that infections and toxins can have on both dopamine levels and ADHD symptoms.
Dr. Miles Nichols is not just a functional medicine doctor; he's also someone who has walked the path of health challenges and emerged with a determination to help others find their way through similar struggles. He has a focus on Lyme disease, mold illness, gut health, thyroid dysfunction, and autoimmunity. Dr. Nichols has turned his personal battles into a professional crusade to uncover the underlying causes of these conditions. From founding the Medicine with Heart Clinic in Colorado to establishing an institute for educating doctors in functional medicine, and authoring two pivotal books, Dr. Nichols has dedicated his life to this mission.

[29:38] How sugar affects dopamine
[32:20] What lab testing is available to assess brain function, dopamine, and structure changes that could contribute to attention issues?
[37:03] What are some initial steps parents can take at home based on this information?
[41:26] Where to find Dr. Miles Nichols online
âThere are some triggers for neuro-inflammation that may play a bigger role, I think, in attention issues than a lot of people appreciate.â
âIt is not uncommon at all that I find - especially in children and adults with attention issues - that there are antibodiesâŠagainst dopamine receptorsâŠThere are some known triggers that can causeâŠthe immune system to start to attack dopamine receptors.â
âWithout even changing dopamine at all, we can change the way in which dopamine impacts mood, focus, and drive.â
âIt appears as though glycine has a calming effect on the brain. It also seems that it has an effect for temperature regulation, it can improve sleepâŠâ
âFor many children and for many people struggling with attention issues is that higher doses of glycine - paired together with looking at causes of toxins and infections and other things like that - can be quite useful and I donât see it being talked about very often.â
âDopamine is what we call a neurotransmitter or sometimes itâs referred to as a hormoneâŠNeurological effects and attention effects are part of it. Pleasure is associated with dopamine.â
âIn some ways, we can think of dopamine as part of the reward system of the brain.â
âAttention is money when it comes to consumerism and business.â
âIt takes more and more stimulus to drive the motivation and pleasure.â
âBecause the levels of dopamine are so variant, going up and down, itâs less valuable to get a snapshot in time level of dopamine. There are precursors to dopamine and there are nutrients and we can look at nutrient testing. I find nutrient testing to be quite helpful.â
âIf diet isnât dialedâŠif sleep is not thereâŠif thereâs overuse of. electronics..some of these basics. I donât recommend going into the nuances of detailed labs when those basics havenât been addressed first.â
âA next layer after diet and stress and sleep and electronic use and stimulation⊠a next layer thatâs really helpful for people is to go into gut functionâŠAnd a sinus swap I like too.â

Is it really necessary to buy organic foods? Is it worth the extra cost, or is it simply a marketing tactic? In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dana Kay, board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, answers these questions and more. Tune in to learn more about what it means for a food to be classified as organic, as well as when itâs most important to stick with organic (and when itâs okay to buy non-organic).

[2:37] What makes a product âorganicâ?
[3:35] What are GMOs?
[6:34] The pros of GMOs
[8:15] The cons of GMOs
[18:39] Why parents should pay attention to GMOs in their kids' food
[21:44] What to do if you canât afford to buy everything organicMemorable Moments:
âOrganic farmers use only natural processes on their farms, so when we buy organic, we can be more confident that we are not eating Genetically modified ingredients or toxic chemicals.â
âGMO stands for genetically modified organisms. GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a lab setting.â
âIn 1994, the FDA approved the first GMO tomato.â
âMost GMOs fall into one of two categories: herbicide tolerant or pesticide producing.â
âWe really donât know how their consumption is going to affect our health long-term. We also donât know how they will affect our planet or our animals. Remember, GMOs are, in essence, manufactured plants. They canât be found in nature anywhere. They are created in labs and then pushed on consumers, many times without our knowledge.â
âIn the United States, three federal agencies regulate the use of GMOs: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These agencies claim GMOs are safe for consumption...but are they really? These organizations are the same ones who refuse to ban ingredients that other countries have banned because of their significant health concerns.â
âA consumer should know what they are eating at all times. They shouldnât have to guess or read between the lines. Labels should be clear one hundred percent of the time.â
âIn the United States, the following crops are often genetically modified: corn, soybeans, cotton, sugarbeets, alfalfa, apples, canola, potatoes, eggplant, papaya, pineapple, salmon, squash.â
âSince the early 1990âs (when GMOs really hit the market), Americans have grown sicker and sicker.â
âWhen we consume GMOs, we are participating in the ONLY long-term safety trial EVER conducted in humans.â
âOne of the best ways to avoid exposure to toxic pesticides is knowing which foods you need to buy organic.â
âIf a food is on the Dirty Dozen List, you NEED to buy organic because these fruits and vegetables have shown to be the most contaminated with harmful pesticides. The foods on the Clean 15, though, donât necessarily need to be organic.â

âWe want you to take it slow. Make gradual changes, one baby step at a time. That way, you can really implement the change really well and itâs not overwhelming on the kids or the family.â
âThe start of a new school year brings on that fresh routine, along with a new schedule and that definitely makes it easier to establish those new eating habits.â
âYour best bet is to pack your own lunch and pack those snacks that are gluten and dairy free. That way you know your child has those safe options.â
âYou really want to communicate with the staff ahead of timeâŠTake that time to really discuss your familyâs dietary needs with the teachers, the school administration, anybody in the cafeteria, whoever needs to hear itâŠThe more you communicate openly about what youâre doing, the easier it will be.â
âWe need to be patient and flexible. Itâs not going to be perfect.â
âLunch doesnât always have to be a sandwich.â
âWe definitely want a breakfast that is nutrient-dense.â
âEverything you are doing - implementing a low inflammatory lifestyle - is going to help with those focus issues.â
âIâve never met anybody who doesnât feel better when they eat better.â
âWe have to choose our hard. Is it harder to deal with our children strugglingâŠor is it harder to make a few lifestyle changes that eventually will become your norm?

âWe were living on MiralaxâŠand the pediatrician just kept saying, âJust keep giving it to him to make him regular. Keep giving him MiralaxâŠ' Within a week of starting this diet and thingsâŠI havenât given him any Miralax. Zero.â
âWithin a week of stopping - especially the gluten, dairy, soy - within a week of stopping those and starting the supplement program and things, he was going on a regular basis and not complaining of stomach aches anymore.â

âI always felt like we were walking on eggshells then, but I donât feel that way anymoreâŠ.Heâs just a totally different kid.â
âNothing is more important than making sure youâre putting your best foot forward for your child and giving them a chance at lifeâŠa chance without medicationâŠa chance with no side effects and a chance to really just live.â

Memorable Moments:
âA lot of the simple things that we can do at home and in our lifestyle are things that are helpful for everything - whether itâs ADHD or any other chronic condition.ââThink about the root causeâŠThere are some things that you can do. There are some things that are contributing to it or causing some of the symptoms that are not as desirable as you would like.â
âThe first step really is just to be mindful. Be mindful of everything that weâre purchasing, everything that goes in our food, everything that weâre buying that weâre putting on our kids - whether thatâs creams or lotions or suntan lotion or bedding or clothing. Everything has chemicals so if you can pick things that are more natural, youâre at least decreasing their load.â
âA lot of our chronic conditions and chronic disease are a mixture or certainly exacerbated by the poor diets that we have - so weâre not getting the nutrients that our kids need - and then our kids are surrounded by too many toxins or chemicals.â
âHow many kids that are labeled or diagnosed with ADHD or have hyperactivity actually have some sort of neuro-inflammation going on?â
âMost of the time - if not all of the time - there are things that we can do to completely cure it..or at least make things better.â
âWe have a lot of ownership over their health and the things that we do actually matter. And our lifestyle is contributing if not causing a lot of these conditions.â
âMedicine is focusing more and more on treatmentâŠbut the rates of chronic diseases are increasing and we need to prevent it. We donât want all of our kids to have a chronic disease and so we have to focus on what we can from day 1âŠeverything that you do matters.â
âWeâre focused on efficiency and faster and more for a long time, but that comes at a cost.â

âWe know kiddos who struggle with those exacerbated ADHD symptoms and behaviorsâŠtheir nervous systems are on overdrive a lot of the time, so this means they are in that hyper-aroused state, easily activatedâŠTheyâre in that chronic fight or flight mode a lot of the day.â
âAnother huge reason I see isâŠseparation anxiety.â
âOur circadian rhythms are so off with the way we live.â
âKids often have a lot of sensory-based needs that donât get met during the dayâŠor movement needs.â
âFor some children..sometimes they do have nightmares or night terrors or they may also have things that have happened to them in the pastâŠthat sometimes get in the way of those restful sleeps. And it can be as simple as always being in trouble at school.â
âStart with creatingâŠthat really structured, predictable, and consistent bedtime.â
âWe hold the keys to our kiddos' nervous systemâŠso using our connection and relationship to scaffold and support that wind-down.â
âHow do we as parents reconcile and come to some acceptance of this season of reality right now?â

Parasites are organisms that depend on a host to survive and spread. Could your child with ADHD have parasites that are affecting not only their ADHD symptoms but also their overall health and wellbeing? Find out in this episode where guest Sinclair Kennally joins the show.Sinclair is a Traditional Naturopath. She's the co-founder of MeditationRx and CEO of Detox RejuveNation. Sheâs not only an expert on chronic digestive disorders but also a passionate believer that toxins, including those from parasites, are at the root of many health epidemics today. Along with her partner, Michael Spandel, Sinclair has turned her own journey through complex chronic illness into a mission to help thousands reclaim their health and vitality.
In this episode, Sinclair helps us understand more about what parasites are, how they differ in kids and adults, the symptoms to watch out for, and what we can do about it.

[3:45] What are parasites, and how do they get into the body?
[5:14] What makes a good host for a parasite?
[8:37] How do parasites affect kids differently than adults?
[10:02] Common symptoms of parasites
[14:02] How parasites are treated in traditional medicine
[17:43] How families can identify parasites
[22:46] What steps to take if you suspect parasites
[30:44] Where to find Sinclair onlineMemorable Moments:
âItâs really actually not unusual to be exposed to parasites.ââYou can get parasites all over the globe.â
âTheyâre a part of nature, as are we. The question is, are you a good host and is your child a good host for them? And are they allowed to set up shop or can you and your child fend them off appropriately with a strong immune system?â
âIf your toxin bucket is full - if your stress bucket is full - you are a better match to parasites.â
âParasitesâŠare also highly neurotoxic. Those neurotoxic side effects are going to present differently in children than they would in adults and in the elderly.â
âParasites do have a consciousnessâŠthey are always fighting back.â
âADHD, ADD, anxiety presenting in children is often a misunderstood response to parasites and to gut disruption.â
âYour pediatrician is fundamentally not prepared to assess this, and itâs not their fault.â
âI always recommend - wherever possible - a whole family approach because exposure happens in families typically.â
âIf youâre willing to assess your child, please be willing to assess yourself as well.â

[41:08] The famous gumball testMemorable Moments:
âWhen families do this together as a family, the changes that the whole family see are just amazing.ââA lot of people are skepticalâŠIt goes against everything that we knew was rightâŠBut for partners, when they can start to feel it in their own body, and when they can start to see the changes around them, thatâs when they get on board.â
âTiny hinges swing really big doors.â
âWhether or not someone finds themself at rock bottom or not, you can start making changes today. You can start seeing changes so quickly in your child if you just take that first step.â
âEverything I do in my program is everything that I was missing when I was going through that same journey with my own son.â
âWeâre not just trying to slap on that one-size-fits-all approach, like medication. Every child is different. Every child is unique.â
âIt actually costs 5X more to raise a child with ADHD than to raise a child without the condition currently.â
âWe have a really, really high success rate. When families follow through and when they do the work, they have success.â
âThere hasnât been a picky eater I have not been able to help.â
âIf thereâs an obstacle you can bring up to me, weâve probably dealt with it before in our program. Weâve probably got a resource inside our program that can help that family overcome it.â
âThere are shortcuts you can do so you donât have to spend all that time in the kitchen.â
âIt may seem like itâs a lot of work but because weâre doing it in slow, small steps to get you to where you need to go, it becomes a lot easier. And really, we are just changing your normal.â
âIf youâve got a child with ADHD, you do not need to suffer. They do not need to suffer. There are things out there that can help you.â
