  • Today’s interview is all about sustainability, connecting with nature and caring for the Earth with the infectiously passionate Meg from Nutmegz Education.

Meg is a fierce protector of the planet, a mum of 4 and an incredibly passionate educator. She’s also the proud Founder of Nutmegz Education, a business that is all about teaching children, and their educators, about sustainable living practices that will save the Earth.

In this episode, Jess and Meg speak about:

    ·  How Meg came to be so passionate about sustainability and the natural world and how her business, Nutmegz Education came to be

    ·  Why she believes that kids must first be taught to love the Earth before they can begin to advocate and care for it

    ·  What WORM TEA is and why it’s not what you might think!

    ·  The biggest lessons that nature has taught her

    ·  What we can learn from indigenous civilisations and their ways of thinking and relating to nature

    ·  Easy first steps that educators can take to bring nature and sustainable practices into their classrooms and schools

    ·  The incredible resources that Meg has created to make these steps as easy as possible for you to implement

    ·  Plus so much more!

**Edit: When Meg speaks about our food waste being 5.7 tonnes, this number is actually much larger at 7.6 million tonnes! (Which gives you an idea of the drastic scale of our food wastage and why programs like Nutmegz Education are needed to incite massive change.)

  • There were only ever a handful of times in my teaching career when something was urgent.

    As in… needs-to-happen-right-this-second-or-things-will-fall-apart urgent.

The thing is, my nervous system didn’t know that.

At least for the first few years.

Every time I was given a task, a parent asked me a question or an idea was posed in a staff meeting, my heart would start racing, my jaw would clench and my mind would enter a spiral of frenetic thought wondering how quickly I could make this happen
    Can you relate?

That’s an example of urgency culture in action.

If you are ready to bow out of this way of showing up and adopt a slower pace (while still being productive AF), this episode includes 3 super easy ways to start.

Slowing down the pace and settling your nervous system doesn’t mean you become less organised and start missing deadlines- it means giving yourself the space to remain present, consider all of the options and make an informed decision from a clearer headspace.
All while showing up from a calm and settled place
Follow the links below for 1:1 support to bow out of urgency culture for good

  • Today’s interview is a beautifully vulnerable and much needed conversation on all things grief with the amazing Katrina Preisler-Weller.

**Trigger warning: This episode mentions topics that may be triggering to some listeners, including death, suicide, cancer and pregnancy loss. Please exercise discretion as you tune in.

Katrina (she/her) is a grief and loss expert, educator and advocate. Through interactive workshops and story-telling, Katrina creates a space for all forms of grief to be seen, heard and acknowledged. By pro-actively exploring the spectrum of emotions, we are better able to understand a response we will all experience in our lifetime – grief. Whether you’re a school, workplace or individual, let’s start the conversation together.

In this episode, Katrina and I speak about:

    ·  Katrina’s experience with grief from losing her mother at 15 and supressing her feelings to now working as a grief educator

    ·  Why grief is often a taboo discussion topic in society even though it is something everyone experiences

    ·  How teachers can support themselves through grief, as well as how they can support their students

    ·  An honest discussion around our predictions of what happens when we die

    ·  The training that Katrina believes should be mandatory professional development for teachers

    ·  What ‘anticipatory grief’ is and how it differs from our traditional perspective of grief

    ·  Why joy isn’t the opposite of grief and how feeling joy can actually be an important part of the grieving process

    ·  Plus so much more!

  • Today’s interview is a beautifully rich, deep and hope filled conversation with the magical Firdaws Ismail.

Firdaws is a mother to two beautiful children. She returned to school after having her children and graduated with a bachelor's in Child and Adolescent Development. She then earned her preliminary credentials in Mild and Moderate Special Education. She worked as a second-grade teaching assistant at a Private Islamic School. During this time, she witnessed the damage done when schools focus on performance at the cost of the emotional wellness of their students and staff.

She is a proponent of a holistic approach to education. Her mission is to help schools reclaim their joy and prioritize emotional wellness with a focus on empathy, connection, and belonging. She firmly believes that schools can flourish but only when they prioritize emotional safety, the most basic of our human needs.

In this episode, Jess and Firdaws speak about:

    ·  Firdaws’ journey within the education system and how feeling emotionally suffocated, unexpressed and experiencing somatic symptoms mirroring her inner feelings led to her leaving the industry

    ·  Her experience growing up as a refugee and fleeing from her home in Somalia and how that has impacted her life

    ·  How her vivid imagination was the key to knowing there had to be another way

    ·  Her belief that we are all interconnected and why it’s so important for everyone in a school to feel as if they have a voice that is valued

    ·  The importance of remembering a person’s humanity as opposed to simply acknowledging their output and performance

    ·  Firdaw’s views on how to create emotional safety in schools, mutual respect between teachers and school leaders and how to make time to connect with your students
