  • Join me for another interview for the 10 Degree Shift with today's amazing guest innovator and generalist leader Christina Gerakiteys.

    Key themes from the session:

    - Don't ask, don't get

    - Put yourself out there more

    - Trust your intuition

    - Put yourself in the circle with people you admire

    - Ideation without execution is hallucination

If you're new to the podcast then thank you and G’day.

I’m AJ, and I work with executive leaders and businesses committed to sustainable lifestyles, practices and impact. My leadership style is very Australian - I call a spade a spade and I know how to use one.

I’m a mindset mentor, coach, facilitator, podcaster and author for forward thinking leaders like you. I’m passionate about helping people achieve their goals sustainably whether they are - creating conscious cultures, finding balance, leading their team or developing personal brand presence.

  • There’s More To Leadership Than Work!

We are all teachers and learners - leadership is relational don't you think.

In this episode I share my thoughts about the different generations in the workplace, what to do when someone is nearing the end of their career and how we can challenge conventional thinking about how we've always done it.

It takes courage, grit, a desire to step outside of the current paradigm to dream a new world into being and above all a determination to meet yourself in your deepest places.

Indeed, this is where the journey truly and deeply begins.

This is not theory and rhetoric. This is not a cognitive course, tick a box exercise. This is real life, real leadership beyond the boardroom. It’s experiential learning at a deep level. Every month we gather to sit in circle.

Connect to yourself, to your team, to other leaders, to your ancestry, to the elders, to the land, to wisdom. If you want to join the circle, uncover your purpose, define your legacy and find your tribe then reach out and find out more at https://www.alexandrajoy.com.au/

  • Managing Director of Eight Recruitment, Nadene Barretto fell into her career in recruitment 25 years ago. She learnt a lot about the industry, about people and about what it takes to lead well.

Fast forward to 13 years ago and Nadene took the giant leap to start her own recruitment agency Eight Recruitment - a boutique agency servicing the Hunter Region in NSW, Australia.

If there ever was an autobiography called “You heard her before you saw her”, Nadene would be the main character. But this version would star Nadene’s iconic and contagious laugh. Nadene, with her hubby Steve by her side, has built Eight to what it’s known for. For these two, turning the industry topsy-turvy is the goal, and attracting equally quirky but talented employees is the conversion.

When starting Eight in 2011, Nadene had the goal to create a recruitment agency that stands out from the rest, to bring value and transparency, and fun. With years of experience and the knowledge to back it up, Eight was then born into Newcastle’s competitive recruitment market.

In this interview we discuss Nadene's strategic decision to stand out as unique and human from their marketing and socials and especially within their office (tune in to the addendum right at the end to hear more about this). It's certainly magnetic - check them out here https://www.eightrecruitment.com.au/

Nadene talks about why it's importance to build a business and your leadership with a focus on the softness as well as the hard facts and yet to keep your resume and focus on more fact and less fluff. She encourages leaders to tell their story through facts and figures, to make a resume real, relevant and relatable.

Check out this episode for a great conversation with Nadene for tips on LinkedIn, standing out and the leaders such as Steven Thomas and Jo Burston who have inspired her along her journey. What can you apply in your career?

  • When Anthony started his career in recruitment 15 years ago he was the lowest performer at his agency.

→ He did the coffee chats thing

→ He tried all the cold calls

→ He was consistent in the follow-up

But he was still at the bottom in his team. Over the next 5 years he:

→ Fessed up to being the "dumbest" in the room

    → Took advice from mentors

→ Discovered his big why and passion

(Hint: You can steal his approach to grow your career too!)

Things started to improve. He changed industries and began to look for ways to serve the industry. He grew his network and visibility while remaining humble.

He then built the 3 key pillars I recommend to make the shift to leader:

    1) Grow your confidence

    2) Improve your competence

    3) Increase your credibility

Check out this episode for a great conversation with Anthony Nguyen, Aged Care Recruitment Manager and Host of the Podcast "Leaders in Aged Care" series and how after what he calls a slow start (I say normal) he then built on these 3 pillars to create an enviable career where other leaders seek him out!

  • Showing appreciation is important in any relationship, and it’s especially important with mentors, leaders and elders who have invested time and effort into helping you grow both personally and professionally.

In a world that venerates the new, bright, and shiny, we can easily forget those with wisdom - our elders. Our elders may be past or present, they may have supported us in business, sports, life or spirituality.

It's time to write a new leadership story - to go back to what all first nations tribes around the world practice - celebrating and honouring elders. Take a moment to sing up the Steward Elders in your world by writing a gratitude letter to them about how they have inspired, mentored and supported you. Whether you use it to send to them or just do it to sing them up in your own way won’t matter, just thinking of them, remembering their deeds helps sing up their spirit soul and memory.

Join me and sing up and acknowledge the elders in your life as a force for good, for humanity and for the future. Create new conversations in your home or workplace through this practice, tell their story, tell your stories, tell your truth, share their wisdom and watch the ripples grow!

  • You may have heard of servant leadership before, but have you heard of servant eldership?

I've had a few leaders reach out and ask - what exactly defines Servant Eldership?

Quite simply the path of a Servant Elder goes beyond the typical role of a leader, it's not necessarily a specific age or time in a leader's career, though it certainly is grown through experience. It is characterised by:

Not serving by compulsion but voluntarily. A leader should desire the office of leader, and serve from that desire, not merely out of rank, role or duty but because they WANT to serve.

Not after personal gain but eagerly. Servant Elders are so eager to add value that they don't look to the financial reward, power or title as the reason for their service, but simply as the means of making more service available to more people.

I have only just begun scratching the surface of understanding the role and path of an elder through my initiations and study of lore with indigenous elders from many nations for the past 6 years. What I am learning is that elders are significant knowledge keepers, they ensure cultural continuity is maintained, they also serve as teachers, healers, counsellors and confidants. They are guardians of the planet, mother earth as well as their totems and all living beings. They are the keepers of the old ways, tradition, myth, stories and legend. The biggest difference between traditional leaders and Servant Elders is where their motivation lies. While traditional leaders care mostly about material advancement, Servant Elders want to see not just their team or company grow and succeed, but all of humanity and the planet thrive and advance.

If you’re eager to be a co-creator and be part of the building of thriving cultures, companies, communities and nations then DM me for a link to a private free community where I’ll be sharing more and asking for your dreams and ideas too. Servant Eldership is a path for now for developing our collective future. It’s a path of walking together, all people’s, the planet with purpose for a future. I want to be part of the shift, I know some of you will too.

  • For most of us, overwork is the new normal and rest is an afterthought. In our busy lives, rest is defined as the absence of work: late-night TV binges, hours spent trawling the internet, something to do once we've finished everything else on our to-do lists. But dismissing rest stifles our ability to think creatively and truly recharge. Today my guest Silicon Valley consultant Alex Pang, will share that we can be more successful in all areas of our lives by recognizing the importance of rest: working better does not mean working more, it means working less and resting better. As an author and leader in rest and reduced work time, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang is passionate about helping businesses, individuals, and governments work towards a future where productivity is prioritised over working hours, and work/life balance can be improved without sacrificing business results. In today's conversation we discuss his work life and background as well as his research and work as a consultant with dozens of organizations across the globe who are implementing shorter work weeks with outstanding results. If you've dreamt about working a shorter work week then tune in for some amazing tips and strategies as well as research into the benefit of working less in order to do more. Some of the benefits include: - better life / work balance - lower levels of stress - less burnout - sleep an additional 30 mins a night - happier and more productive - shorter, more focused meetings - better deep work and collaboration time segregation - more meaning - more intelligent way to work - higher quality work You'll be left asking yourself - "How could we get started here in our workplace?" • I first met Morven when she was the Director of Community Development at Lake Macquarie Council. I found her to be sharp and knowledgeable as well as deeply passionate about making a difference for the community she served. Fast forward to now, over a decade later and Morven is the CEO of the Council, leading over 1200 staff and driving the agenda for positive change, growth and opportunity for the city. In this interview I dive into asking Morven about her early career, what led her to be CEO today, the mentors, challenges and guiding principles that have helped her along the way. While calm and self assured, Morven is not always comfortable in front of the camera however her story is a great leadership tale of learning to empower and leverage the strengths and talents of your team, staying true to your own personal values and integrity and creating clear boundaries and guard rails for maintaining a balance with family life and work. ______________________________________________________

Over the last few hours I have spent time on zoom and on the phone coaching professional women – CEO’s of not for profits, government team leaders and a technical specialist looking to advance her career. All of them amazing, talented women. All of them frustrated and overwhelmed, and some of them on the brink of tears.

    “What’s wrong with me?”

“I’ve been getting interviews and they go well but I just can’t seem to land that next higher position.”

“I feel like I am doing all the things but none of them are working anymore.”

“I feel so stupid. I’m smart, I have degrees. Why didn’t I see this coming?”

Each of them has so much talent and potential. Each of them suffering a similar ailment – imposter syndrome, a feeling of not got enough and a belief they need to push harder and faster to gain recognition, respect and reward.

What would you have wished to know before you started your career?

  • If you're a corporate professional or a government employee looking to grow your influence through your network then this is the episode to tune into.

My guest today is a longtime friend and colleague Melissa Histon. Mel is the founder and CEO of Hunter based charity Got Your Back Sista. Mel has grown the charity over the past 8 and a half years through determination, volunteers and her amazing professional network.

I have a saying that I use regularly (borrowed it from Alex Hormozi) and it is "give, give, give until they ask" and Mel is someone who epitomises this. She doesn't just network for networking or status sake - she has a real and genuine interest in people and it sets her apart from other business development professionals, CEOs and fundraisers.

  • My guest on this episode of the 10 Degree Shift is a workplace safety inspector - Phil Lalor.

Phil has a reputation for being a professional and having high standards, people who know him will say he always has highly polished leather boots and a spotlessly clean car. I'm envious. Living in the bush on dirt roads my car can be cleaned one day and coated in dirt the next. That's not however why I brought him on the show.

I invited Phil to be a guest, because like me, he's a no BS straight shooter and he has had a really varied career. He's skilled in Crisis Management, Budgeting, Internal Audit, possesses highly Analytical Skills, and spent years navigating a career in government.

And it hasn't always been roses. In his very first career application Phil was knocked back receiving a letter from Defence Force Recruiting saying he was "educationally unqualified". He overcame that obstacle and many more to grow into a leader who has a good grasp of now making a life, not just a living. Join me for a yarn with Phil while he was on a motorcycle road trip doing just that!
