Episodes

  • To round off 2021 and season 1 of The craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is chatting to branding expert and designer of the podcast logo, Brandon Wilson. Find out about what goes into branding your favorite beers and how important the can is to telling the story of a brewery.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

The can is the brand's opportunity to sell itself to you. When you go to the store you see so many different choices and you can only go with what it says on the can. They need to tell you not just how the beer tastes, but what their story is. Why should you choose their citrus IPA over the one sitting next to it on the shelf. Changing your can design can be risky, what if the people who usually buy it don't recognize it with a new can. That's why you don't see many staple brands change their look too much. Brandon has a rule of three where he likes to have three strong ideas and pits them off against each other to become a final design. The color scheme of a can should be representative of what's inside. A light summery drink should have light or bright colors whereas a dark stout with rich flavors should have bold and dark and heavy colors.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I'd rather my favorite beers be designed well and be inspiring'

‘The basil wasn't for taste, it was for the aroma'

‘It's an expensive product and you're damn well right they're going to make their packaging feel great'

    ABOUT THE HOST

Jenna Steele fell in love with the craft beer industry while studying hospitality at Cornell University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration. In one of her courses, she was able to try countless craft beers, from across the US, in every style. Though the beer was good, the can art stood out. She wanted to know more about how the cans came to be.

Jenna's love for craft beer is primarily due to beers and breweries' creative and visual elements. Got cool can designs? Heck yeah.

After working in finance for a couple of years, Jenna returned to her love of craft beer. She wanted to hear the stories behind can names and designs, brewers' backgrounds, breweries, and hear from label artists themselves. So, she took it upon herself to start The Craft Brewers' Creative under her Craft brand, Beer Can Lover.

On The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna interviews brewers, graphic designers, marketing managers, creative directors, owners, and everyone in between about themselves and the beers they bring alive.

  • This week on The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Kirk from Mind The Font, a black owned branding and packaging design agency. Jenna and Kirk got talking about an article titled ‘How Contract Brewing Can Help Minority- and BIPOC-Owned Breweries' so she invited him on the podcast to discuss the article, and some much less serious topics.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

There's a lot of ego, and disagreements, and mansplaining in the craft beer industry. It can make it a little harder to enjoy the beer when people try to impose so many rules. Most craft breweries aren't trying to be a huge global thing, they just want to be the beer of their town or their local area. All packaging needs to have key points on it. What's the brand? The flavor? The size? And the ABV? The job of the designer is also to give you all the information you need to know without having to turn over the can.As a designer, Kirk gets a brief from the company with all the key information about the product, what they want, and who the brand it targeting.Your story as a brand is so much more important than your image.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I went to the store and there was like this wall of 300 different beers. It was like a kaleidoscope of color'

‘I'm pretty sure this is orange soda... but I'm not sure'

‘There's not a tonne of rules with making labels, if you understand the core, you can get creative'

  • This week on The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Mike from the Craft Beer Bucket List podcast. Find out all about how to market your brewery or taphouse from someone who has been there and done that. Also listen in for Jenna and Mike's opinions on social media, marketing, and what kinds of beer they just can't stand.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

If you're running a brewery, then you have to decide if you want to try to be the big supplier or the local spot where people come down to have a beer. You also need to get involved in the community, go to events, support local causes, let people know that you're there and that you are a part of the area. It doesn't matter how good your beer is, if people don't know who you are or where you are then you won't have any customers.Having an online presence can be helpful but if you don't do it right then it can do more harm than good. The UK kills it with their beer can art.Craft beer is getting to the same levels of popularity and recognizability than the big lager brands.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The thing I like about breweries are the people'

‘Everyone thinks that social media isn't the magical solution, it's not. You have to use it appropriately'

‘Most breweries have a pretty interesting story, it's just making sure people hear it'

  • Coming to you from Eventide Brewing in Grant Park, Atlanta. In this week's episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by jack of all trades, Hayley Cowen and head brewer, Adam Lukey from Eventide Brewing. Find out all about their favorite beers and can art that they have created and how they go about brewing different kinds of craft ales.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Eventide means twilight in old English, which is when the group of friends who formed the brewing company would get together to drink.German towns will often have a town brewery and that will be the most popular drink among the locals, as opposed to national or international brands.A Märzen beer is a German beer traditionally brewed in March so they are ready for Oktoberfest. However, in the modern age we have things like temperature control and stainless steel so the process can be expediated. This is sometimes considered controversial to beer purists.A cold IPA is a crisper version of an IPA brewed at the lowest possible temperature and when finishes is almost the opposite of an American pale ale.

  • A bit of a change this week as we explore more of the brewing side of beer. In this episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by guest Harry from Xbeerimental Brewing Co. Find out what Harry brews and how it's more creative than your average craft beer.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Gruit ales are essentially beers that are charged with botanicals rather than hops, traditionally made in Belgium.Harry thought why am I brewing the same things that I can go to the store and buy. If I'm making it myself, I can experiment with weird flavors.A lager yeast likes the colder temperatures and sits at the bottom whereas an ale yeast likes a room temperature and floats to the top.

  • In this episode of The Craft Brewers' Creative, Jenna is joined by Illustrator Jen Borror of Hoot Design Studio. Jen has had her art featured on beer cans for Monument City Brewing, 1623 Brewing, and Telluride Brewing Co.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

A graphic designer and an illustrator have two different sets of skills. An illustrator draws the art and the graphic designer does the layout and branding. Most breweries will use both a graphic designer and an illustrator but Hoot Design Studio do both.Jen recommends new breweries work with an experienced graphic designer rather than an artist. There is so much more that goes into the can than just the art. How does it all fit? What font will grab attention? How should the file be formatted to wrap around the can?If a file isn't formatted properly when it goes to the printer, they will charge you more to fix it.A brewer has put time and money into making their beer, and they're trusting the designer to sell what they have made. Does it represent what's in the can? Does it make people want to pick it up off the store shelf?

    BEST MOMENTS

They discuss in detail the design process and some of the designs Daniel really loves and why in this fascinating insight into the work of a specialist designer producing unique artwork for craft beers. Listen in and find out more.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

When I push back on a design they listen to me because they trust me.Sometimes with a series of beers, the colors are what bring it together. When changing the logo it's been about updating it but keeping the aspects that are recognizable. Some awesome beers don't have great designs on their labels. The art is definitely something I look at on any beer can.Every brewery has its own identity and it's the art cans that share the message with people. When I started out my goal was to do beer labels and I've achieved that with Barrier. It can be a quick turnaround when you are creating a label for craft beers.I still do everything by hand if I can when I'm creating designs. In design, the fun stuff is the craft beers and the Art is such an important element of craft beer. The craft beer community is very tight-knit. The community is great for making connections and I get new work from people I've met along the way.I'm constantly trying to promote people who are great in the craft beer space. If I'm drinking a beer I want people to know so I want the beer to match the glassware.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I do have favorite beers and favorite labels but they usually aren't the same thing'

‘Changing the lettering made it easier to read but less cool overall'

‘It's been nice to see more hardcore design fans'

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

We jumped on in and started Celestial Beer and we already had some beer nerd followers so that helpedBecause we have young children it's been great to create a space that young families feel comfortable withCans sales are higher because people still at the moment want to ‘buy and go'Once we had found our place and developed the space I became much more confidentWe have very defined roles and that really helps and we are a very last minute type of breweryCreating the artwork is a very fun part of the jobThe details like the colored 4 pack tops are what brings together the full aesthetic of the brandWe are trying to bring new ingredients into our beers and educate people on themWe use social media to explain the beers in ways that mean people remember them and tell their friendsEvery label is designed to be fresh new and visually interesting but part of the brand so we use the same color paletteWe want the whole experience to heighten the excitement in every wayWe have our own glassware designed with our name on it and we have done glassware to match particular beersI gain inspiration from everything around me and having an overarching theme associated with science and space provides a framework to work within

They discuss the importance of the relationship between the owner and the designer and the inspiration and concepts behind some of their iconic designs.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Typically designers either want the freedom to roll and be trusted, or the owner knows exactly what they wantThe ideas come from the wild dream world of Adam EckhardtYou need the right relationship between owner and designerMost can designs have more concept behind them than it appearsThere are a lot of elements in the designs that correspond to the area where the beer is producedLabels are a weird throwaway art but it's not just something crazy there is more to it than thatIf the client has an idea you need to run with it and collaboration is everythingWe are trying to make things fun repeatedlySome brands have a standard but we want something to be an event every timeEvery year the definition of craft beer changes to include Boston Beer and Sierra Nevada as they grow larger because they are founding members of the BA.The definition of craft beer is the use of the right traditional ingredients and being independently ownedYou open a brewery as a passion project not to make moneyThis brand is all about community and the cans represent the fun and fantasy aspect of our community

    BEST MOMENTS
