Hey, everyone! We have a surprising announcement for all of you expecting our continuing series on 1980.
We regret to inform you that we are taking a hiatus from the show for a while. There is no time frame as to when we are coming back but there is a hope of March. While we are struggling to get funding to continue the show, Patrick is going through some personal issues that is preventing him from doing the show for a time.
We want to come back and get back to this, but some things need to be worked out before that happens. Keep checking back for when we come back – with a name change.

Is it a post-apocalyptic future or is it just a Wednesday in Australia in the eighties? That is the big question when the guys sit down and watch Mad Max. The first entry in the Mad Max franchise. The film that started it all and deviates extremely from what comes after. The viewing of the eighties continues through January.

The Extended Play Movie Podcast kicks off season three with a look at the films of 1980. There is no better way to kick off 2019 than a look back at The Blues Brothers from 1980. The most absurd musical-comedy ever. Starting off as a sketch on Saturday Night Live, it is a comedic, musical road trip on a couple of hoodlums trying to save an orphanage as a mission from God.

It is Christmas for everyone. Whether you celebrate it or not, there is no escaping it. For the twisting of the knife, we bring you the classic It’s A Wonderful Life. Yes, the episode is early. Normally, the episodes are dropped on Tuesday, but since Christmas is on Tuesday – we figured we would drop it early. George, Mary, Uncle Billy, Clarence, and the rest.

What is Christmas without a Cannon film? What is Invasion U.S.A.’s connection to Christmas? Slim. Very slim. It takes place in Florida during the holiday season. That’s it. But it was enough for us to discuss this film for our holiday special. Chuck Norris as a something-operative? Going after a Russian that is using multi-cultural terrorists to bring terror to the United States? All these questions and more will be raised after viewing of the movie. So, enjoy Invasion U.S.A. And, if this doesn’t bring you holiday cheer, you are dead inside.

When you think you had a really weird day, just think of this movie. Scrooged is a modern re-telling of the Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol. Bill Murray play Xavier Cross, who runs a television network and is putting on a live-version of A Christmas Carol. The film is full of fun, great performances, and heart. A Who’s who of 80’s pop culture, the film manages to delight even if you don’t know celebrities. Grab some egg-nog and enjoy a tour-de-force of Murray in the classic Scrooged.

Our official kick-off to the holiday series comes with three simple rules. All of which this star of this movie breaks. That’s right Gremlins is the family/creepy/fun Christmas movie that is good for all ages. It is odd to say that about this movie, but given that this is a Spielberg produced film, there is enough fun for the whole family. Sit back next to the tree and listen to this modern Christmas classic.

A movie that changed the face of the genre and launched the careers of its leads. Further creating two types of romantic-comedies the Judeo-Christian and Jewish versions. “All for one and one for all” is the motto for this week’s episode. The guys discuss the sort of reclusive Disney title, The Three Musketeers. A Disney movie that has some suggestive language, a woman committing suicide, and some great action. Reuniting Young Guns actors Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland, the movie is a great ensemble that has Sheen as a bit of the straight man. Protect the King!

One of the most outrageous comedies of the 20th century. A movie that can be filed in the “can never be made again” category. Mel Brooks takes the story of a black man becoming the sheriff of an old west town. Hilarity ensues. This brings on the discussion of how movies cannot be based on context anymore. Simply use of words are the matchstick of outrage. Which is sad because the movie, in fact, makes fun of racism. Plan and simple. Now, do that voodoo that you do so well!

During the production of The Departed, Martin Scorsese claimed that he didn’t know the film was a remake. It makes you wonder just how much of that was true from a guy that sees a bunch of movies. Especially when your film is nearly identical to the original Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs. That is the final movie of Patrick’s list for the month.
The film is about two police officers undercover, knowing that a gang lord has a mole in the cops and they know there is a mole in the gang lord’s crew – they are search for each other. The film itself is not as lighter than the remake, in fact, the American remake provides a vengeful ending.

If there was ever a movie that felt like a Tony Scott film and a Quentin Tarrantino film, it would have to be the action classic, True Romance. A film that reminds you, when given a good role, Christian Slater can be a good actor. Also, will remind you just how much you love Christopher Walken and Gary Oldman in weird roles.

What happens when you are having a mid-life crisis and stuck in Japan? You look for a woman that looks like Scarlett Johansson and have a non-physical love affair. I mean, who wouldn’t, right? We continue Patrick’s favorite movie series with the film that made people forget that Sophia Coppola was that awful actress in The Godfather Part 3, but a kick-ass director. The film is amazingly shot, framed, scored and acted. A great reminder just how awesome Bill Murray can be. A great reason to watch this movie again.

This week, we begin a small series of shows that will focus on some of our personal favorite movies. For the rest of October, we will discuss four of Patrick’s all-time favorite movies. We kick off this run with a small, nearly forgotten film, Dancer in the Dark. This Lars von Trier film, which stars Bjork and David Morse, focuses on an immigrant woman who likes to consider the United States as like a musical.
The film itself is a very small, independent film. Using experimental and non-linear storytelling, they film manages to provoke an immediate response. Love it or hate it, the film is definitely an experience for all viewers. Just read some of the reviews.

It’s the end of the line for the “Films of 1979”. There seemed to be nothing more fitting than to end the series at a black hole. Considering at the late seventies, there was still a misconception that black holes were mysterious. Now, or if you watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it is believed that it is a wormhole to another area of the galaxy.
Unfortunately, Disney’s The Black Hole still likes to deal with the science of the 1950s and nothing that resembles the 1970s. The film has some landmark visual effects, but the logic of the film is all over the place. Having loved this movie as a kid, it does not hold up against even the rudimentary science facts that we know about the black hole. Nothing’s worse than being a child of divorce. What is your parents are Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep? That has got to be intense. Our second to episode in the “Films of 1979” series is the dramatic classic, Kramer vs Kramer. The movie was definitely designed to be more pro-father, than it was as to why a mother would leave her child. The behind-the-scenes drama between the two leads were just as interesting as the movie, which sort of had neither character that was likeable. Grab some ice cream and get on the jungle gym for our last entry in September, Kramer vs Kramer.

When Steven Spielberg announced, to his friends, that he would be directing 1941, they were very supportive. In private, they were concerned because they never knew Steven to actually be funny. The result? 1941. The film had a star-studded cast behind and in front of the camera to be a major hit like Jaws and Close Encounters before it. The film wasn’t a disaster and would’ve been considered a hit by any other director. When you’re Steven Spielberg, you are held to another standard. Get on your zoot suit and climb onto the Ferris wheel. The guys continue “Films of 1979” with 1941.

This week, the make a special trip to California. Well, they are already in California, but so were the focus on this week’s episode: The Muppet Movie. If you don’t live in Southern California, you would know it by looking at the film, but it was filmed in and around Los Angeles. Kermit and friends come out to Hollywood to make the world a better place. In times like these, we need them more than ever. We kick off the second month of our “Films of 1979” series. Man, it seems like the movies of that year were longer than the actual year. The pace gets picked up with the discussion of the second entry in the Rocky franchise: Rocky II. We’re “gonna fly now” through this episode that could have been on our “sequels better than the original” series, but there are some drawbacks to the film that kept it off the list. So, get on your sweats and grab the chicken. We are about to get back in the ring.
