- In 1952 French demographer Alfred Sauvy wrote an article in
L'Observateur suggesting that the Global population was split into "Three worlds, one planet". The third world was made up of poor countries in Africa, Asia and South America. The principle challenge for the third world was crippling poverty. The second world was made up of communist bloc countries like the USSR and China. Authoritarian political systems that caused wide spread human rights abuses and the deaths of millions of dissident citizens were a second world problem. Finally there was the first world. The world that the folks in the 2011 movie Carnage inhabit. Their principle challenge is what to do with themselves when they don't have any significant challenges. Carnage staring Jodie Foster, Christopher Waltz, Kate Winslet, and John C Reilly is a movie that incapacitates first world problems, outrage culture, and disingenuous people who have faced few real challenges in their lives. So come check it out with us. -
- Sometimes you just want to watch an amazing buddy movie with two really good actors portraying funny and insightful characters that experience growth through the process of the story all while leaving you with the warm glow of friendship. If you're looking for that movie go watch cop and a half... or maybe Lethal weapon. Whatever you do don't go watch 1991's the Last Boy Scout staring Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans. This Tony Scott pile of dung will make you want to go throw yourself off a bridge.

- Once and a while you just need to get some revenge. You're tired of listening to country songs about how your girl left you, your truck broke down and your dog died. So you recover from your wounds and do what Porter does in Payback start killing everyone who screwed you over on your trip to the bottom. Along the way you may have some set backs (like getting your toes smashed by a sludge hammer) but hey you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs. 1999's Payback staring Mel Gibson is our action Noir adventure this week so join us as we break it down.

- 2007's no country for old men based on Cormac McCarthy's book of the same name is one of those movies filled with memorable moments. In a movie filled with violence the Coen brothers have managed to bring us creative scenes marked by attention to detail and variety. So many movies that feature violent acts become repetitive in there sameness (I'm looking at you The Departed). No Country for Old Men does not fall into that trap. Added to that are stellar performances Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Wood Harrelson. The movie comments on Nihilism through its narrative structure in bold way that very few movie makers could get away with. So come join us as we engage with the story telling of No Country for Old Men.

- In 1954 Gregory Peck signed on to do a movie about the recently ended Korean War. The movie named Pork Chop Hill provides an interesting bridge between the clear patriotism of World War II era movies and the disillusionment that accompanied later Vietnam movies. Peck delivers a wonderful performance as a traditional World War II hero caught in a stiff formal bureaucracy that can leave men to die because of political considerations. Along the way the movie touches on race relations, combat fatigue, and heroism. All and all a good movie that marks a transition in the history of war movies. So join us for Pork Chop Hill.

- When your running the streets of LA sometimes you have to be willing to roll with a little corruption. Everybody's gotta get their taste so that things run smoothly or so you might believe if you watch 2001's Training Day starring Denzel Washington and our favorite actor Ethan Hawke right before he joined the Air Force in Good Kill. Training Day is one of those completely ridiculous movies that still draws you in anyway because Denzel Washington is such a good actor. That said the over the top drama has more in common with overacted Shakespeare in the park than real police work. Still its a fun ride so join us for Training Day.

- So imagine that you build a space fold drive that allows you to travel light years away in an instant. You could explore different solar systems and planets. Sounds great right? The only problem is that the drive also opens up another dimension... and that dimension is Hell. Not like man it's really uncomfortable in that dimension but literally hell. That's the concept for Event Horizon. It all sounds good right? An intriguing concept until you get to the horse shit execution that involves ripping off scenes and dialogue from twenty other Sci-fi and Horror movies. It's enough to make you want to gouge out your own eyes! ... Yeah so come join us as we watch 1997's Event Horizon staring Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neil.

- In 1979 Francis Ford Coppola made his war movie. Some have said that to be a legendary director one must do at least one truly legendary war movie. Coppola seems to have taken that advice to heart. He started with an epic John Milius script and added a cast of amazing actors including Martin Scheen, Robert Duvall, Laurence Fishburne, Harrison Ford, Dennis Hopper, and Marlon Brando. He filmed a fever dream of a movie that has more in common with Joseph Conrad's novel the Heart of Darkness than with later Vietnam movies. It is a truly remarkable film. So join us as we tackle Apocalypse Now and ask important questions like: why does napalm smell like victory? Why can't charlie Surf? and What is the Horror... the Horror?

- It's a movie about a time traveling bunny rabbit and a pedophile played by Patrick Swayze. That's all the incentive you should need to check out 2001's Donnie Darko a twisted tale of time travel and parallel universes that will have you wondering... what the hell is going on? Written and Directed by Richard Kelly Donnie Darko Stars both Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal wandering around a parallel universe where Donnie played by Jake Gyllenhaal should have been crushed by a jet engine. Yes its an odd tale... compelling at times and also weird. So come join us as we explore the depths of Donnie Darko and feel free to bring your creepy bunny mask.

- Here's the one you've been waiting for. A movie that gets to the heart of being a warrior. Sure we've gone through some good movies about warriors with you... Black Hawk Down, Hamburger Hill, Bloodsport... ok maybe not Bloodsport. All of those movies have just been prep work for the 1982 classic John Milius's Conan the Barbarian. Staring Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Max Von Sydow, Gerry Lopez, Sandahl Bergman, and Mako... Who can forget Mako. Conan the Barbarian is a brilliant piece of Cinema saved from Oliver Stone's bad script by John Milius. No one before or after has been able to truly capture the essence of Robert Howard's character Conan the Barbarian as well as John Milius did. From the brutal murder of this parents, through the wheel of pain, the gladiator pits and finally to the killing of Thulsa Doom the story of Conan the Barbarian is a master course on how to forge a cinematic warrior. So come and join us as we discuss 1982's Conan the Barbarian.
