In this episode, Candice and Jessica open up about the pivotal moments when they realized it was time to transition from their roles as Executive Assistants and explore new career paths. These decisions came after deep reflection and, in Candice's case, seeking outside counsel to confirm that her journey as an EA had come to an end. Jessica shares her perspective on how traditional office environments often present challenges for neurodiverse individuals, including those with autism or ADHD. She discusses how the pandemic created a more inclusive work-from-home environment where many thrived, and the difficulties now faced as full-time office returns are being enforced.
This honest and thought-provoking episode dives into career evolution, self-awareness, and the broader conversation around inclusivity in the workplace.

In todayâs episode, weâre having a healthy debate with Jeremy Burrows Author of The Leader Assistant: Four Pillars of a Confident, Game-Changing Assistant, and founder and host of The Leader Assistant Podcast which Jessica and Candice have both been guests on.
We start with the debate of the Title âAssistantâ referring back to Candiceâs viral LinkedIn post that sparked this debate (link below). Jeremy has a different opinion to Candice and also brings feedback from some of the admins in his community about how they feel on this topic. Jessica gives feedback from her admin community and shares her experience with titles and gives an example of how a title change caused a huge financial impact in her family.
We discuss how all 3 of us have held the same title of âExecutive Assistantâ, but had VERY different careers, opportunities and salaries. We discuss the privilledges that some of us have had, and acknowledge that others in our communities donât have these privileges, including the gender pay-gap.
We discuss the varying costs of training, development and events in admin from different sides of the globe. What some see as expensive and what some see as investments and get their companies to pay for the investment. We discuss pay disparity and talking about your salary with other admins.
We touch on the ugly side of some of the thought leaders in the admin space. We discuss the lack of diversity in this space and the need for more younger people to start showing up in this space, without the fear of being torn-down for their efforts.
(This was recorded just after episode 2 with Dominique Givens. We interviewed Dominique about her experience as a younger african-american female who was on the receiving end of a known bully in the admin community for giving her opinion and making her way as a thought leader on LinkedIn in the admin space).
-
On Episode 2, we introduce Dominique Givens as our first ever guest. Dominique is a Chief of Staff & Executive Administrative Partner in the Technology sector.
So a bit more about our first guest - she is the result of a pre-med and computer science double major having an existential crisis and dropped out of undergrad to join the workforce. Why? She goes on to become the ultimate corporate linchpin, of course! Meet Dominique Givens, former Chief of Staff at The Adecco Group and current Executive Administrative Partner to the EVP of Aircraft Engineering at Shield AI.
Dominique has spent over 6+ years honing her skills in what she has aptly coined "C.O.A.M." (Communications, Operations, and Administrative Management)âa framework she has even trademarked! Partnering with C-level executives in the technology industry, Dominique has held tenure at tech giants like Meta and Pinterest. Now, she is leveraging her experience and skill set to help reverse engineer that success in the startup world.
In 2023, Dominique found herself the target of a prominent figure within the admin community after sharing an innocent LinkedIn post that gained some attention. Unfortunately, this led to a wave of online bullying from a fellow admin professional who should have known better. This experience prompted us to bring this important conversation to the podcast, highlighting the critical issue of online bullying in professional spaces.
In this episode, we dive into the emotional, psychological, and career-related impacts of online bullying, particularly focusing on its disproportionate effects on marginalized communities. Dominique courageously shares her personal experience, opening up about the emotional toll and the challenges she faced both personally and professionally. We explore how she managed the situation, the actions she took, and the invaluable support she received from the admin community.
Tune in as we discuss the importance of recognizing and addressing online bullying, and how we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for everyone in the professional world.

Welcome back to âThe Future Focused Adminâ! In our Season 2 premiere, we dive into a topic that's been sparking widespread conversation - saying goodbye to the title "Assistant." Happy Birthday Jessica! For us, this was episode 5, but for our community and listeners, it was the day they found out about our secret podcast project! Weâre so thrilled you have been enjoying it. We truly appreciate the 5 star ratings, follows and feedback. What an incredible and supportive community we have â so thank you!
Todayâs episode, we talk about 'Balancing Work and Personal Life as an Admin'. We feel like this is always so hard in our profession as weâre often the âgo toâ person for information and access.
Why is it that admins must get to a point of burnout before we decide to set boundaries. Why are we not taught to set boundaries from the beginning of our career. We need to fix this. Health is wealth. Without your health, you canât function, so make sure you prioritise your wellbeing (both physical and mental health) so you can be the best version of yourself.
We want to hear from you! Are you happy being back in the office? Would you prefer to be able to work from home? Are you being forced to come back? Have you had a career change because of this?

If youâre keen for us to come back for Season 2, please let us know by liking the Podcast, giving us a 5 star rating, writing a review and all the usual things for both the Podcast and on our YouTube channel. We would love your ideas for Season 2. Would you like us to interview people, or should we keep it just Jessica and Candice against the world? Should we switch up the format? Should we do it bi-weekly? Weâd love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Advocating for yourself as an admin is about being able to advocate for your value.
We have Learning and Development (L&D) business case templates available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w7B4GZ9uXOyKxhTpwT_ozlJeiFKQibEstxqwR46BtcA/edit?usp=sharing
and here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wY5pCL1WcR8n5xrAQjJ8GD_v1vmdh06jM-ePUT2wDv4/edit?usp=sharing.
If you get denied an L&D request, make a date in your diary to ask again. If they say âmaybe in 6 months or later in the yearâ â diarise it. Donât let it go. Youâre entitled to use your L&D budget. Learning and development is part of your job as an admin.
If you donât feel youâve found your voice to advocate for yourself â find a mentor, get a coach, join an admin community but donât sit in silence. You will be surprised how many people are here to help!
The âNo Clubâ book that Jessica referred to is: https://www.thenoclub.com.

Todayâs episode is on Admin Titles and doesnât this topic stir peoples opinions up. Just remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion and their own experiences of how they feel with what their title has been, is and could be in the future. We set up a poll on LinkedIn recently with the topic âDo you believe itâs time we drop the title âAssistantâ and move across to the title of something like âExecutive Business Partnerâ? 81% of 200 voted Yes and 19% no. Interesting isnât it?Has a change in admin title helped you go up in salary? How do you feel about having âAssistantâ in your title? Do you feel people donât recognise you as the professional you are because your title says Assistant? How do you feel about being asked to get coffee or pick up dry-cleaning etc.? Do you feel that sits in the remit of a role of an Assistant? This is the article that got people in a heated debate over admin titles: https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-03-03/assistants-remote-work-new-job-titles-expanded-rolesIt was Maggie Olsen who I was trying to remember who the Chief of Staff trainer is: https://www.novachiefofstaff.com/Did you know there are over 160 admin titles according to the The World Administrators Alliance (WAA) Global Skills Matrix? Read the report here: https://wa-alliance.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/WAA-Global-Skills-Matrix_Foundation-Report-FINAL.pdf.

âHow do you put the genie back in the bottleâ. Jessica makes the point that we have proven that most admin jobs CAN be done working from home becasue of the pandemic.
In this episode, Jessica discusses how moving to remote work led her to being diagnosed with ADHD and how this was a relief.
Are you someone who thrives working from home or do you function better in the workplace? Candice discovered she needs a bit of both. Jessica would be happy never to go back to a typical office as Jessica thrives working comfortably at home, whereas Candice needs social interaction. They both agreed they were more productive working from home though.
If you work remotely, how do you stay engaged and feel like youâre connected with colleagues? Jessica and Candice chat about making it work for you so youâre able to make your work life â your best life!
If youâre looking to move to a job that has remote or hybrid work, make sure itâs in writing and clear (especially if youâre an EA) on how much flexibility you have in working Hybrid e.g. do you need to be in the office when your Executive is in the office. Be clear on what youâre signing up for and if you have specifics like you need to leave by 3.00pm, get that in writing so thereâs never an issue when you need to either work from home or leave âearlyâ as management changes, but signed contracts do not.
