In this episode, Jacque speaks with Brad Hawkings, an Australian Shepherd breeder and trainer in Pembroke, Kentucky.
About 5 years ago, Brad learned about a therapy dog workshop in his area. At that time thought that his dog, Bannock, would be perfect to enroll. Bannock not only passed with flying colors, but he was then allowed to go into any situation therapy dogs are allowed, schools, hospitals, nursing homes.
Soon after becoming certified, Brad and Bannock were invited to a camp for children with serious illnesses. Tune in to hear Brad tells this story, which is sure to bring you to tears.
In this episode, Brad shares advice on how he trains his therapy dogs, and about the Canine Good Citizen test, which is an expert-made training program designed to help you and your dog be the best you can be–together.
Brad’s mini farm is a prime place to raise and train Aussie's. He has been breeding Aussies for almost 20 years, striving to produce top quality Aussies which are both intelligent and healthy. His breeding stock is registered with either ASCA and/or AKC.
He believes in the health of the dog. His dogs are on regular heartworm prevention, flea and tick control and have all the appropriate vaccinations. When they turn two, they go in for hip exams and get OFA certified. His dogs are not only working dogs but make lifelong companions.

Today Jacque speaks with Joe Sheeran about Aussies. This is a very interesting conversation about Joe’s dog Woody the American Farm Bureau Federation's 2019 Farm Dog of the Year (the first Farm Dog of the year!).
Joe has a fascinating story about how he came to work with Austrailian Shepherds.
When Joe was looking for a dog, he met Rodger Stevens, owner of Pincie Creek Australian Shepherds. This is who he adopted Woody from. After that, Joe met Shelly Spotswood. She really introduced him to training his dogs for stock work. That led to trialing.
The way that Joe acquired Woody was very interesting. Woody was originally given to another owner, but after the owner gave him up, Joe stepped up and welcomed him into his life.
One day when Joe was herding, his cow attacked him, only to be saved by Woody. He was injured, but Woody saved his life.
Jacque and Joe also talk a lot about training their dogs to work with sheep, especially the stubborn ones. Dogs make mistakes, but as you spend more time with them, they learn and get used to different types of animals. No matter how much instinct they have, the Austrailian Shepherds still have to have an understanding of their duties.
Joe says dogs really have everything they need to know inside of them, it's just like training a person you work with. He is a big proponent of allowing dogs to figure out things for themselves. This allows the dog to use their mind, make their own decisions, and be more proactive of the needs of their tasks. It may not go well the first couple of times, but once they learn more and do not need to be told what to do, it can save the situation.
What separates Aussies from other dogs is the way they think. This episode really shares that what they can learn is unlimited.

In this episode, Jacque speaks with Randy Kidd, owner of Kidd’s Australian Shepherd, about the history of Australian Shepherd, and what defines a working dog. They also discuss Australian Shepherd genetics and how it is so important when choosing a dog.
Randy Kidd grew up around working dogs. As he got older and started working in livestock, he decided it was time to get his own dogs. In 1979, Randy Kidd got his first registered Australian Shepherd and still works them to this day. He is the owner of Kidd’s Australian Shepherd.
Randy tells stories about working dogs and what a good working dog looks like and what they can do. He talks about the kind of dogs he likes and shares the history of his lines. He gives great advice on choosing pups, and getting into breeding working dogs.
Randy’s company, Kidd’s Australian Shepherd, continues to keep strong Hangin Tree and Slash V bloodlines as the principal breeding in their Aussie dogs. They believe that a powerful dog can handle all types of stock.

This is a very interesting episode about training with chain behavior and how explosion detection dogs! Jacque speaks with Élise Saint-Pierre, the owner of Dig It Dogs Canine Services and an explosive detection canine handler.
She started with training when she was in high school with her terrier mix. After she graduated high school, she went to British Columbia for 6 months to learn more about dog training. When she got back to Nova Scotia, she started boarding and private training.
For Élise, chain behavior training sessions are her favorite way to work with a dog because she can see their true intelligence. A chain behavior is a multiple set of behaviors that a dog must do all of them, in order, for the dog to get the reward.
Élise is also working with an explosion detection dog, a shepherd named Roberta. Élise keeps up on her training and works on a lot of nose work (scent detection) with her.
When training, she says it's easy to get stuck in the frame of “this dog is not understanding the training” but Élise realized she needed to take a step back and train them based on what works for them.
Élise focuses on shaping the behavior. She starts with a goal in mind, and rather than have them follow a treat, she teaches them the process. She likes letting the dog be creative so they can figure out the system, rather than just going through the systems.
Élise has 2 “full-time” dogs with whom she focuses on obedience and agility training.

In this episode, Jacque speaks with Aaron Steele, founder of Goats On The Go and host of the Farm Dog podcast.
This is a very interesting conversation about finding a working dog that works for you. When you are looking for a working cattle dog, it is very important to understand the dog’s genetics. Building a relationship with an outside breeder is important, especially if you want to know the dog’s background, training, and potential health issues.
It is important to know what dog you want for your lifestyle, and that is why podcasts like The Instinctive Australian Shepherd and Farm Dog are educating people about the breeds and what to expect from them.
They were just having fun at first and started off their farm as a hobby, but quickly became a business called Goats On The Go®. Now they have 35 affiliates, including one in Canada and Australia.
His son’s helped manage the growth, but as they grew up and moved out of the house, he felt the “growing pain” and decided it was time to get his first stock dog - so he decided to interview experts and that was the birth of his podcast, Farm Dog.
Goats On The Go, based in Ames, Iowa, is a targeted grazing company that uses goats to sustainably manage unwanted vegetation on customers' properties. They also produce the most sustainable meat on Earth for restaurants and consumers. Aaron’s organization is helping people to stop surrendering to the use of poisonous herbicides or CO2-spewing equipment and using goats instead.

Title: Clinic Hopping with Kathi Schwengel
In this episode, I chat with Kathi Schwengel, an author and Australian Shepherd enthusiast. There are so many similarities between our lives, this conversation is like speaking with an old friend.
We talk about how having Australian Shepherds is like having a Ferrari without breaks. These dogs are amazing, they have such inner knowing, but you need to put breaks on them!
We also talk about what it is like living with Australian Shepherds, living on a farm, dealing with sheep, ducks, and other animals. Kathi was working with the versatility line of Aussies when she got her first sheep.
She was trialing and training her dogs, but realized she was missing all the good stuff that happens when you do it “the right way”. When you don't focus on the main end goal, you get to experience all the little goals, which she found was way more fun for her. She knew she wanted to continue taking her dogs to competitions, but she needed a break. She had to take a step back to find more joy for not only herself but her dogs as well.
We discuss ‘clinic hopping’ and changing techniques. I suggest finding one mentor and mastering one method before finding another method to experiment with.

Learn how to start dogs on cattle with a mature dog. Those of you who run under Larry as a judge should really listen to this. He shares what he wants to see in a trial dog as well as what is necessary to have in a ranch dog or ranch dog pair.
