In this episode, Tom defines the true meaning of anxiety and how it has evolved in humanity over the years. As it was with him, many anxiety sufferers are confused about the reasons why anxiety becomes apparent in their lives so hopefully this episode sheds some light as to why fear is a universally common trait. Tommy's anxiety DISORDER came about from a negative experience on mushrooms six years ago but the truth is, he had some underlying issues that needed addressing.
One of the most difficult things to do is logically make sense of intrusive thoughts. By understanding where anxiety stems from as well as looking at ways of categorising fear based on its rationality, we can prevent our thoughts and fears from spiraling when they are present.

My experience through mental health was an interesting one. Although I was very open about my disorder, I never seemed to able to relate to people with their issues. I soon discovered that my fears were more irrational than others. I'd stay awake at nights fearing the concept of eternal suffering and the onset of severe and permanent mental illness whilst my friends and family worried about errands that needed attending to, upcoming exams and relationships. When OCD kicked in, I realised my anxiety disorder had taken a turn for the worst and something needed to be done. I hope this video helps shed some light on some of the experiences of anxiety sufferers as well as the intricacies of OCD, which is more than just turning switches off and on. Enjoy!

This episode of The Mind Mate podcast explores how the The Mind Mate came to be, it's vision to empower individuals to own their mental health experiences, the evolution of this wondrous emotion known only as anxiety as well as an in-depth personal anecdote of the host of the show.
The Mind Mate was founded upon the need for authenticity when talking about mental health issues. Any anxiety sufferer both past or current has first hand experience in dealing with thoughts similar to these; ‘Oh yeah, but that’s not really what you’ve got’, or,’ Yeah but your condition is worse. That person had it better than you’. That constant feeling of isolation doesn’t help anyone and it’s time we bring people together rather than push them away even if it’s ourselves doing the pushing.
Our aim is to shift the understanding and perspective of anxiety and mental health through the promotion of authentic mental health discourse. Talking about one’s issues should be as easy as talking about what’s on the menu for dinner or which sporting team you barrack for; even which chick or bloke you’re into!
Our vision is to create an environment that genuinely celebrates authentic personal story telling on all fronts which therefore, empowers individuals and gives them the freedom to move through their irrational fears and setbacks in a less confronting way. Yes, the awareness has been raised. We all know mental health is a real thing but its now time we educate ourselves and see what it looks and feels like below the surface. It’s time to give the isolation, the anonymity and the embarrassment the flick… FOR GOOD! We ALL have ups and downs. It’s therefore, about time we all became mates.
