    8 years ago, Simon & Schuster published Nina Teicholz’s book The Big Fat Surprise, which is, to this day, a controversial non-fiction science-based book that attacks the common notion that fat is bad for health. The Big Fat Surprise was a NY Times bestseller, was named one of the top 10 non-fiction books by the WSJ, and one of the year’s best science books by the Economist.

    Nina Teicholz is an investigative science journalist, author, and thought leader in nutrition. She is the founder of the Nutrition Coalition, an NPO that ensures that nutrition policies are based on the best and most rigorous science. Nina is a graduate of Stanford and Oxford universities.

In recognition of her outstanding achievements in public service, education, and the arts, Worcester State University conferred Ilyasah Shabazz with a degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. She has worked with the Office of the Mayor in Mount Vernon as Director of Public Affairs & Special Events.

    As a member of the U.S. Delegation, Ilyasah accompanied President Bill Clinton to South Africa to commemorate the election of President Nelson Mandela and the Education & Economic Development Initiatives. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, where she teaches Perspectives on Justice in the Africana World.

  • Katie Spotz is an endurance athlete, charitable ambassador, author, and world-record holder. The list of accomplishments to her name is long, and includes five Ironman triathlons, cycling across the country, a 325-mile river swim, running 100 miles nonstop in under 20 hours, and a solo row across the Atlantic Ocean.

    Katie became the youngest and only American to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 2010 and the first person to have swum the entire length of the Allegheny River in New York state and Pennsylvania. More than $150,000 was raised for clean water projects with the row. To date, more than 43,000 people have gained access to clean water through her challenges and events.

    Katie tells her story in her poignant book “Just Keep Rowing” and film “Running Home.” She has been featured in The New York Times, CBS Morning News, CBS Evening News, Anderson Cooper 360, Sports Illustrated, Glamour Magazine, The Joe Rogan Experience, and more.

    Katie is currently a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was recently named the Elite Female Athlete of the Year.

  • Colonel Merryl Tengesdal is a personal trainer, commencement speaker, leadership consultant or motivational inspiration, reality star on “Tough as Nails’’, and author of “Shatter the Sky.” She is a retired Air Force Colonel, veteran, and (Naval/Air Force) aviator. She has held various leadership and training positions, including Director of Inspections for the Inspector General of the Air Force.

    Colonel Tengesdal is the first and only African American woman to fly the U. S. Air Force U-2 Aircraft with over 23 years of aviation and leadership experience in both the Navy and Air Force, serving in the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. Throughout her career, Colonel Tengesdal has logged more than 3,400 flight hours and more than 330 combat hours.

    In her memoir, “Shatter the Sky,” Colonel Tengesdal shares her life lessons on everything from her career in the military, being the first and only black woman to pilot the U2 aircraft, to marriage and motherhood – and everything in between.

    Colonel Tengesdal holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of New Haven in Connecticut, a Master’s in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle and an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering from the University of New Haven.

  • Captain Tammie Jo Shults is an American commercial airline captain, author, inspirational speaker, and naval aviator.

    Known for being one of the first female fighter pilots to serve in the United States Navy, active-duty Captain Shults became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. On April 17, 2018, as captain of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, she safely landed a Boeing 737-700 after the aircraft suffered an uncontained engine failure with debris causing rapid decompression of the plane. She saved 148 lives that day.

    In Captain Shults' memoir “Nerves of Steel,’ she shares her story from growing up as the daughter of a humble rancher to breaking gender barriers and receiving wings of gold to managing compound emergencies in landing Southwest Flight 1380 and revealing insight into true heroism.

    Captain Shults holds a split degree in PreMed and Agribusiness from MidAmerica Nazarene and is a Women In Aviation Advisory Board member working to empower women, especially young women, worldwide and at home.

    Today, we discuss Tammie Jo’s “Nerves of Steel,” her experiences in the Navy, being one of the first women to fly an FA-18 Hornet and the flight in 2018 that changed her life.

    Karen is widely recognized for her courtroom victories and is primarily known for being highly skilled at crisis management. Her clients vary from companies, high-profile individuals, and executives.
    Karen went to Brown University and Yale Law School. She then went to Washington as a judicial clerk for Judge Merrick Garland and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. After her clerkships, Karen worked in the Obama White House as associate counsel to the president.
    Karen has been the go-to person for debate prep for several leading Democrats; she has prepared Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Kamala Harris for Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates.   • Originally from Wales, Choi has lived all over the world: Beijing, Hong Kong, Germany, London, and eventually New York, while, as a single mother, raising her daughter.Choi was an assistant to the visionary pop artist Peter Max, and throughout her life has explored a range of crafts including metalwork, woodwork, music, and silversmithing. She was a recipient of the Gold Award from the Prince of Wales Business Trust, and has worked as a background artist in film animation in Hong Kong.

    In 2012, Choi started The Young Girl Project, seeking to make the world a better place by battling child sexual abuse. With autobiographical cartoon-like drawings of naked little girls, she illustrates that fight.
