  • Predictive statistical models with natural language processing (NLP) rules and knowledge representations can deliver enhanced results for use cases in subsurface and wells disciplines. These range from helping identify bypassed pay, mitigating cognitive bias in well planning, reservoir and field analogue generation, early identification of drilling issues, to generating optimal completion design for petroleum engineers, competitor intelligence, improving search ranking & suggestions, stimulating serendipity, and discovery of new knowledge.

When the new DSEA Technical Section was created in 2022, we started planning a newsletter series, the first of which appeared on December 1, 2022. Paul Cleverley had the privilege of writing the first article of substance of that inaugural issue. The title was Natural Language Processing in the Subsurface and Wells Disciplines, and the article was really an elaborate 13-page paper with figures and references. During this SPE Live, we dig deeper into Paul’s knowledge of how AI applies to Oil & Gas.

Speaker: Dr. Paul Cleverley, from Infoscience Technologies Ltd. in the UK.

Moderated by: Claude Baudoin, independent consultant in IT and Knowledge Management, and member of the SPE Data Science and Engineering Analytics Technical Section.

  • The oil industry has a great experience with the applications of Data Analytics/ Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning (DA/AI/ML) in the Reservoir Engineering Discipline, specifically in reservoir surveillance and reservoir modeling and performance prediction. This situation is like what is occurring in other reservoir subdisciplines, for example in reservoir characterization, reservoir management, and other petroleum engineering disciplines.Despite the wide range of data science and engineering applications, there is still room for improvement for the number of applications to be even greater and to improve future applications. In this SPE Live, the SPE DSEA Technical Director and the SPE Reservoir Technical Director address some of the challenges in the application of DA/AI/ML to several reservoir engineering problems, and answer some of the questions related to DA/AI/ML applications in reservoir modeling & performance prediction.

Speakers: Rodolfo Camacho and Silviu Livescu.Moderated by: Birol Dindoruk

  • In this SPE Live, Gioia Falcone, rankine chair of energy engineering at the University of Glasgow, discusses the application of the United Nations Framework Classification to geothermal energy resources. Gioia discusses why we need a resource assessment framework for geothermal, presents a real-life example, and synergies with the oil and gas sector.

  • In this SPE Live Podcast episode, we take an in-depth look at the numerous economic influences on oil and gas values for the coming year, and what they could mean for the long-term future of the energy industry.

  • The oil and gas industry has traditionally had a low representation of women in technical roles. One possible explanation for this disparity may be a lack of awareness and initiatives aimed at promoting and supporting the inclusion of women. However, with the growing importance of data science and artificial intelligence in the industry, there is an opportunity to attract more women to these fields. To do this, a top-down approach may be necessary, focusing on developing and supporting female talent and providing easier access to opportunities. This approach would ensure that women with the necessary qualifications, competence, and skill sets are given the support they need to excel in the industry. In this SPE Live Podcast, speakers Sushma Bhan and Carol Piovesan discuss this topic and answer your questions.

  • The UK offshore energy landscape is evolving quickly to become a more integrated system, where the transition is accelerating as we strive towards a Net Zero energy future.

In this SPE Live Podcast episode, speakers share their expert perspectives on the industry's progression as we move down the ET roadmap.

  • Drilling operations involve many different service providers, each addressing specific facets of the well construction process. In practice, the drilling organization, including the support from onshore operation centers, addresses the coordination of the various tasks executed by multiple entities. Yet, the natural fragmentation of drilling operations into multiple services has slowed down the implementation of drilling automation solutions because computer systems from each involved party are traditionally not designed to exchange information with other systems.

The SPE Drilling System Automation Technical Section has therefore started an initiative to define standards for computer interoperability during the drilling process. This sub-committee is called D-WIS for Drilling and Wells Interoperability Standards. In this SPE Live, Eric Cayeux and Deep Joshi talk about interoperability as the key factor to better drilling automation.

As often experienced in a multi-disciplinary effort, it has been necessary to first define a common terminology. A classification of typical drilling operation functionalities was then defined. This classification has been structured in hierarchical control terms. Emphasis has been put on the generality of the proposed solutions in order to allow drilling system automation providers to reach the vision: “develop once, implement anywhere”.

Furthermore, in the context where multiple parties can provide simultaneous advice, a solution for the integration and conflict resolution of concurrent advisors is proposed.

The industry-wide workgroup effort has now reached the point where the developed solutions are getting tested on more complex use cases.

    Speaker: Eric Cayeux, Chief Scientist

Moderated by Deep Joshi, Data Scientist

  • In this episode, SPE 2020 President - Shauna Noonan, talks with Artificial Lift experts Anthony Allison and Greg Stephenson about how they got into the industry and the upcoming SPE ALCE.

  • "Members often ask me if I am disappointed with how the latter portion of my presidency was affected by the pandemic and the crash of oil prices. To be honest, I am not disappointed. I was able to visit many sections as President-Elect and speak at many events; however, the role of SPE President is much greater than that. This time was critical to serve as chair of the SPE Board and guide our society through an inflection point, requiring us to anticipate how to deliver on our mission to our members in a post-pandemic world".

In this episode, Shauna Noonan shares the status of each goal she set while being this year's SPE President and the pandemic’s impact on it.

2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core

    From Shauna's August President's Column:

I am proud to be part of a society with so many strong leaders, contributors, and champions within its ranks. As I traveled the globe to engage with our membership, my pride in being a petroleum engineer and professional in the oil and gas industry grew with each visit. I want to thank all the sections and chapters that hosted me, and I pledge to keep my promise to meet with sections where visits were canceled due to the pandemic. I want to thank our SPE staff from all our regional offices for their constant efforts to implement and maintain the programs and create the tools identified in SPE’s strategic plan. I also want to express my gratitude to my employer, Occidental Petroleum, for its steadfast support and understanding throughout my journey as SPE President. It is one thing for an individual to see the value that SPE provides in terms of competency development, but it is even better to work for a company that recognizes it as well. As I worked to make our society stronger, I, too, have gained strength from this memorable experience.

  • "When we are confronted by any crisis, the period of recovery often offers opportunities to emerge better and stronger than before. If we are imaginative, innovative, and perhaps a bit patient, we can deliver a superior and more valuable experience in attending our conferences with the bonus of making them accessible to more of our members. I believe that we can and will emerge from this challenging time as a stronger SPE, able to deliver more to our members".

In this episode, Shauna Noonan discusses strengthening the SPE Conference Experience.

Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.

2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization’s Engineering Core

    From Shauna's July President's Column:

Of all the programs that SPE offers, the most rewarding and enjoyable ones for me personally are the conferences. I love walking the floor of an exhibition hall, discovering the latest technology advancements, and listening to the various product demonstrations. I look forward to running into fellow SPE members in the vast conference halls and catching up on what they’ve been doing since we last met. When exiting the room of a technical session, I like being able to turn to the person next to me and ask their opinion about the presentations we just heard. Finally, I relish being able to attend the receptions and luncheons to network with industry colleagues. I attribute most of my career achievements to those moments of connecting with others and learning from them during SPE conferences.
