In this inspiring episode, we meet Chris Parrish, a remarkable individual who defied the odds by surviving stage IV pancreatic cancer; diagnosed in 2008. Despite experiencing symptoms for five years, her diagnosis was delayed due to the elusive nature of the disease and the fact that she was only 35. Since her diagnosis, she has not only survived but thrived, becoming a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges. Chris founded the Purple Iris Foundation to raise awareness, provide support and hope for others diagnosed with cancer in Maine.
Chris's journey is all the more remarkable as she also faced a secondary challenge—a traumatic brain injury resulting from a fall on the ice. Despite this additional hurdle, she remains steadfast in her determination to overcome both of these health challenges and be a beacon of light for others.
Through Chris's story, we learn about the importance of being your own advocate, having a positive attitude and being a true partner with your medical team. Her experience sheds light on the complexities of pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the need for increased awareness and research in this field.
Join us as we delve into Chris's journey, from the initial symptoms to her life as a survthriver (Chris's own term for surviving & thriving).

It all started with what was presumed to be a standard case of perimenopause. Michelle's menstrual cycles were getting heavier and unpredictable, but when she began getting winded walking up a flight of stairs she suspected something much more serious was going on. After numerous attempts to get to the bottom of why she felt so awful, a medication that was supposed to help her, ended up almost taking her life. Although this side effect was documented, it was so rare, none of her doctors were aware of it and the cycle of trying to get her healed started all over again. This story is truly one misstep after another after another and without Michelle's perserverance and advocating for herself she most likely would have had a very different outcome.

What happens when you are suffering from an illness that no one can see? When a friend or family member is diagosed with cancer or has a stroke, we can see the physical manifestations and everyone rallies around that person with support, but the same does not hold true for mental illness.
Mathew Blades was at the height of his career as a radio and television personality when he began having constant back pain, then shingles and finally a series of severe panic attacks. The last panic attack was so severe, Mathew was positive he was going to die. When the ER doctor said "there is nothing physically wrong with you", he knew it was time to make some drastic changes in his life and he walked away from the life he knew to address the generation trauma and lead a life of purpose.Connect with Mathew Blades:

Kirsten and Chris WIlliams met in college and it was love at first sight. They had their first son at age 22 and age 21 respectively. For many years they were happy being young parents and didn't consider adding to their family until many years later. Unfortunately, when the timing the right, pregnancy didn't come as easily as it had the first time. They were on an adoption waiting list for two years and finally made peace being a one child family. Surprisingly enough, right after they withdrew their adoption application, Kirsten found out she was pregnant. Their son was 11 and more than ready to have a baby brother or sister.
Kirsten's pregnancy went according to plan, but the delivery was another story. Peter was delivered via emergency c-section as he was losing blood and oxygen during labor. After a harrowing first week they left the hospital feeling like they dodged a bullet and Peter was not going to suffer any long terms effects from his traumatic birth.
At a certain point Kirsten noticed that Peter was not developing at the same rate as her first born, so they began a quest to determine if the development delays were normal or something more serious.

You may remember Kaitlin Slepian's name from Episode 22 when her mother, Laurie, shared her daughter's story of receiving a one in a million diagnosis. It was our most listened to episode and I know Kailtlin's story captured the hearts of so many people through her mother's beautiful depiction of a 17 year old girl, who was dealt a blow but refused to give up on her dreams of a future.
Today, we are so fortunate to have Kaitlin share the same story, but from her perspective. From a scared high school senior who just wanted to be normal to a now 24 year old who is embarking on her adult life and wouldn't change a thing about the route she had to take to get there.
Thank you for listening.

My lifelong best friend, Betsy Raber, was young, carefree and had just begun a career with Blue Cross Blue Shield. One Friday evening she stopped in at her boyfriends restaurant and was offered to go on a quick motorcyle spin on a motorcycle with an acquaintance. Since it was such a beautiful night and she had never taken a ride on a motorcycle, she agreed.
Less than a mile into their ride, they were hit by a drunk driver. Betsy shares her story of how one moment changed the course of her life and the aftermath is still very present 30 years later.

Heather Boney and her husband, Shon, met briefly in high school and reconnected a few years later when they fell in love and got married. Shon's occupation was "businessman", but he had a passion for flying and often piloted his family on several adventurous over the years. By all accounts they were a happy, loving, normal family with three beautiful daughters living the American dream until their lives took an unexpected twist.
In 2019, Heather started to notice subtle signs that Shon was not acting like himself and in the following months those signs became more prominent until he was finally diagnosed with a Glioblastoma.
Heather shares their journey through a Glioblastoma diagnosis with so much grace, love and poise. We broke this episode into two parts because there are so many important aspects to share.
I hope everyone who listens to this episode will share with everyone you know because Glioblastoma's are unlike most cancers in that there are not a lot of early warning signs, but I know Heather wants to share her experience and what she learned to help anyone else out there may be going through the same things.
As always, please like, follow and share the To Be Continued podcast to spread the word so we can continue talking about those things that no one talks about at the dinner table, but in doing so, we know we are reaching other people who feel alone in the same situation -

Brian Howie, host of the Great Love Debate, makes a living talking to people about relationships and human connection, but it took a serious car accident for him to realize that he had no real, significant relationships himself. As he sat in a hospital bed with 20 broken bones and fluid building up in his lungs, his biggest fear was not his injuries but how long it would take for someone to notice or care if he didn't make it?
Brian and I talk about vulnerability and why it is the key component to meaningful relationships. You can listen to The Great Love Debate on all streaming platforms or www.greatlovedebate.com. Please like, follow and share. IG @tobecontinued.podcast

My friend, Michelle Moore, is back to talk about one of our scariest experiences ever; returning to the world of dating after long term marriages and cancer. Although our approaches were very different, we had each other to relearn how to date in an online world and shared many giggles over bad dates and strange experiences.
Dating again is really scaring for most people after they have been off the market for several decades and then you add in a health history that comes with physical scars and fear of recurrence. We talk about how we each handled that difficult topic and how we almost just decided that staying single forever was going to be the easiest route to take.
