  • Dr. Roch King recently got an opportunity to talk with Jeremy Kipp, the Head Swimming & Diving Coach at Boise State University. Shortly after we spoke Coach Kipp was Named the Mountain West Conference Swimming Coach of the Year for second consecutive season. Coach Kipp held assistant coaching positions at UC Satna Barbara and the University of Southern California, prior to be being named the Head Coach for the Boise State Broncos. Jeremy and I reflect back a little to the time when I was the coach and he was team captain at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, but we spend most of the conversation discussing the transition from being an assistant coach to leading a program. Coach Kipp shares some insightful stories ranging from being a young coach working with world class athletes to what you can learn from lunchtime basketball with coaches from other sports.

  • This past weekend, the 2017 Men’s NCAA Division 1 Championships were hosted at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis. The consistently outstanding, and sometimes mind-boggling, performances made it an historic meet. We will be revisiting, both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA meets in future episodes of the Torch & Stars Podcast.  Last weekend was also the first weekend in the past 2 months that did not feature an Indiana Swimming Championship meet of some form. Torch & Stars Tuesday will be back to its regular format next week when we recap the Speedo Sectional Meet and wrap up the Winter Segment of the ISI calendar.

For this special Episode, I got the chance to chat with the Founder and CEO of Fitter & Faster Swim Tours, David Arluck, along with one of FFT's most in-demand Clinicians, 2 time Olympian and World Championship Medalist, Cammile Adams.

We talked about the mission and vision of Fitter & Faster Clinics and how they got their start. Cammile shared her story about how she got into the sport of swimming and when she first thought she could compete at an elite level.

Fitter and Faster and Indiana Swimming have joined forces to create the Green Flag Clinic Series for competitive swimmers that are newer to the sport. Cammile discusses how athletes can get the most out of their clinic experience. We all talk about the upcoming Green Flag Clinics coming to Bloomington, IN on April 22nd and Elkhart, IN on April 29th. Cammile will be joined by Olympian Klete Keller in Bloomington. Klete will lead the Elkhart Clinics along with Christine Magnuson. Direct links to register for the clinics can be found by clicking on the Green Flag Clinic Series link at the bottom of the show notes. We hope you enjoy this lively discussion.

  • From time to time, the Torch & Stars Swimming Podcast will produce and publish content that doesn’t naturally fit into the typical weekly format of News and Events on Tuesdays and longer conversations about coach and club development on Sundays. This is one of those episodes. I am Dr. Roch King. I am the Sport Development Director for Indiana Swimming. Recently I got the opportunity to talk with Arlene McDonald. Arlene has been a pillar of the Indiana Swimming community for decades including formerly serving as the General Chair for the LSC. She now has the role of Event Coordinator, but her impact is much larger than the title suggests. Arlene leads the organizing committees for all of the high profile competitions that are hosted by Indiana Swimming, including the MidStates All-Star Meet, arena Pro Series, Speedo Sectionals and she also help coordinate the inaugural College Challenge this past November where the USA National Team faced off against the Big Ten Conference All-Stars. Arlene and I discussed Indianapolis hosting both the Women’s and Men’s NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships along with the rapidly approaching Speedo Sectional Championship. As this podcast goes to air, the Men’s NCAA meet will be kicking off tonight, Wednesday evening March 22nd. entries for the Speedo Sectional Meet at Indianapolis have closed.

We also looked ahead to a big summer of events at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI including the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials and the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships. An important underlying element of our conversation is the critical importance of the entire Indiana Swimming Community to the successful execution of these high profile meets. Our LSC is blessed by the culture of hospitality exhibited by our swim clubs and their volunteers. It is only through the continued support of our Indiana Swimming family, that we can continue to provide these unique opportunities for athletes here in Indiana and across the globe.  There are opportunities to be part of these regional, national, and international level competitions. Links for more information on volunteering can be found (here). I hope you find the conversation informative and inspiring.
