    About the Episode:
We talk about what it means to be the Thunder Bay Radio Diva and grow up behind the mic. We ask Dee if she believes in the idea that growing gracefully is possible? Do we really get more beautiful with age. Dee discusses how embracing yourself especially as we get older allows others to relate to us in a real way, and connection to others being the ultimate impact in our world. We discuss how our friends influence how we see ourselves, for better or worse. We get down and dirty about Botox, and what Dee’s experience was. How do we know a beauty procedure is right for us? Does altering our bodies get in the way of the personal journey to connect with our inner self? Learning to be ourselves can one of the most difficult things to do, but one of the greatest gifts you can offer to yourself and your community.

    About the Episode
Mindy discusses what she learned about herself, the health and beauty industry, and self-love during her long-time career in the sports and fitness model industry. Mindy confesses the moment she realized this industry that she had helped develop was not serving her community the way she had initially perceived. She recognized that looking like a superhero on the outside and asking your body to be its best physical self, does not necessarily translate to inner confidence or self-love. After a traumatic event Mindy realized it was necessary to course correct and choose an alternative way to act in the world. Mindy shares ways she has found true inner acceptance, and why it is important for the whole self. We discuss the three factors to premature aging, and how a water fast may be one way to reduce the impact on our body and skin.

    Guest Bio:
Mindy Heather Blackstien, together with her husband Jeffrey Kippel, are pioneers in the fitness and bodybuilding world having helped to spearhead these niche cultures. They created the World Natural Sports Organization (WNSO), founded The FAME Agency, produced the FAME World Tour, created Fit Connections with Robert Kennedy, and published FAME Magazine. As a result, people from all backgrounds, experience levels, age groups and ethnicities successfully transformed into bodybuilders, fitness models and athletes. Many went on to become top influencers, cover models, sponsored athletes, world champions and stars.

Despite this, and after running FAME for about a decade, Mindy came to the realization that being FIT goes beyond appearance. Just because someone looks like a superhero, doesn’t mean they feel like one. Being a solutionary, she chose to discover how to fill this void and course correct. Fueled by a vision, she immersed herself in empowerment education, mentored under leaders in their field and set the intent to discover the people, products and philosophies that could truly help others love better how they think, function and feel.

As a result, she became a whole life coach, Thai yoga massage instructor, metaphysical minister, and non-surgical surgeon along the way. Currently Mindy has a show on the Doc STAR TV network. She co-created Rethink Fitness, a masterclass and certification course for personal trainers, and is set to travel the world to deliver it. She sits on the Board of Advisors for The Social Universe (TSU). She just authored a book with her husband —The Ridiculous Adventures of Serbinand — that is both humourous and empowering. And, she is developing a gamified movement to help anyone self-love and self-heal.

    About the Episode:
Michelle and Anna discuss what it means to be aligned with self even when it may be difficult to stick to the path, how the idea of beauty shifted for Anna from being called flat chested in Grade 6, to an introduction of beauty in the music industry during the era of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, eventually coming into her own and realizing her light comes from the inside to emphasis the external physical body. We talk about how simple breath can divert not only bad behaviour but bad photos. Anna explains how she was able to begin the reconnection with self and quiet the mental chatter, when a drummer in her band asked her to come to a yoga class. Anna offers simple, accessible yoga poses and breathing techniques to bring oxygen back to the skin, detox the body, and reduce inflammation. Anna allows us into her emotional space and personal growth in a very authentic and meaningful way.

Guest: Alicia Bucknor, The Royal Artist

    About the Episode
There is beauty in adversity, and Alicia is a testament to this. Motherhood and a traumatizing car accident asked our guest to re-evaluate her priorities, how she saw herself, and her role in the community. We discuss fashion to sea moss, and the importance of just doing ‘something’ during the day for our health and fitness. Alicia shares her passion to empower not only her girls but the wider community to understand how special and royal they really are. A beauty crown is not something we fight for at a pageant, it is something we must learn to crown ourselves with, this being something only you can do for you. We discuss the importance of our children understanding early that the idea of beauty is more than just the clothes you wear, how you look, or what other’s think, it is about a resonance that can only come from the inside. When we discover this vibrational beauty in ourselves, the entire world including all the unique people we see during the day becomes a masterpiece.

Guest: Zhana Dmitryuk, Founder, Owner and Instructor of Flexspace Studios

    About the Episode:
It is always about the lines, and in this episode Michelle and Zhana take on the saying, “no pain, no gain,’ at least when that comes to the world of beauty and the body. Is a healthy, fit body not within our reach, if for whatever reason we can no longer sweat it out with the latest hardcore fitness phenomenon!? We look at how ‘gentle’ does not just benefit your overall well being but gets the results you are looking for. Zhana explores the unrealistic view of her body through the eyes of the dance world, while also breaking down physical barriers as to what is possible. She shares how she frees herself from a limiting medical and societal narrative by listening to her body. Zhana walks us through her journey from illness, to discovery, to recovery, and now a whole-body vitality. We are excited to share Zhana’s beauty secrets and exercise tips that anyone can do from home to start their own healthy and healing fitness journey.

    Guest Bio:
Zhana is a stretching instructor and owner of FLEXSPACE STUDIOS, a fitness studio that teaches stretching as a workout. Zhana was enamoured with the dance world as a young child but was unable to participate do to a debilitating childhood illness that left her watching from the side lines. When she got out into the world as a young adult, she wanted to try everything and discovered her passion for movement in her late 20's. Nonetheless, by pushing her body from zero to full out, she found her body falling apart from a lack of balance between spending hours at her desk job and a passion for her pole fitness hobby. She was looking for foundational fitness that would help bridge the gaps in her strength and flexibility and allow her to live pain-free, as well as find freedom of movement in any activity that she chose to take on. She found this in stretching, and, 3 years later, has left her corporate job to teach and run her studio full-time. Zhana specializes in teaching adults with no prior movement background, and those who have always thought themselves to be inflexible. She takes special pride and joy in unlocking an individual's potential and proving to them that they can be stronger and more flexible than they ever thought they could be possible.

    About the Episode:
We discuss how our personal walk and challenges set us up for the best parts of ourselves, opening the door to a new way to envision what is beautiful about ourselves and others if we choose to. The journey may be demanding and difficult at times, but it allows us the opportunity to learn about our bodies and look at our way of being in the world that we would not be able to access without a little push at times. Christina discusses 5 must haves to support your inner and outward beauty regimen that we all can incorporate without purchasing the latest product from the Shopping Channel. We touch on nutrition to supplements and favourite topicals.

    Guests:

Christina Bigelow Natural Health, Reiki Healing, with a specialty in Pregnancy and Fertility

    Bio:

Christina’s journey to health was not an easy road. It was through various health complications that she finally was able to develop a relationship with her own body and the world around her that worked for her. Her journey began in a toxic work environment along with a serious wake-up call that she could no longer keep doing what she was doing with a good conscious, nor could her health continue in this way, or she would be seriously debilitated at the age of 30. She pursued every avenue she could think of at the time, even though this was a limited scope. She had little success, everything she tried seemed to help only a small amount and failed to have a long-term effect. She started reading everything she could get her hands on and changed the focus of her schooling to that of holistic nutrition, even though it was the unpopular option. She realized from doing energy work, just months prior, to honour her spirit. Her life would be forever changed. It didn’t happen all at once; it took years to regain her health. She continued to attend lectures, certification programs, keeping up on research, all to bring her clients the best service that guaranteed results. She didn’t want them to have to wait like she did and be left to figure it out on their own. She started getting the best results and quickly, when she started incorporating mind, body and spirit into the protocols and recommendations she was providing to her clients.

She now serves clients around the globe, all with great success. Even though she now specializes with fertility and pregnancy clients, she has worked with clients with various concerns, including cancer, diabetes, weight-loss, mental health, stress, arthritis, aging and so much more.

    About the Episode:
Trista explores what it was like to come to terms with a part of her appearance that is not considered the beauty standard, while actively participating in the entertainment industry. She talks about what it was like to try to hide this part of herself, and what happened when she finally took the cover off her big secret. She helps others understand the steps she took that could be applied to any ‘big secret’ that we try hiding to move from shame and fear to owning it. We discuss what it meant to truly feel beautiful, what happened inside her body, and how others responded to her. This is a powerful episode that can empower the listener to take what they may view as a shortcoming and make it their beauty superpower!

    Guest Bio:
Trista is a Canadian singer songwriter and film artist. She is currently promoting her new debut single called SMILE. Her music video is coming soon with an EP this year. She has been singing for as long as she can remember and performing ever since her mom forced her to enter a singing contest at the Santa Claus parade when she was nine. Long story short...she won! Trista discusses losing all the hair on her body when she was 10 years old due to an autoimmune disorder called alopecia. This led to her writing, directing and starring in a film called FOXY. It is a documentation of her experience with alopecia and through the filmmaking process learning to celebrate what I thought was her biggest flaw. It was later broadcasted on national TV. Though in a constant battle with my ADD, she is currently pursuing music.

    About the Episode:

We discuss how water is our number one beauty must-have.We explore how as individuals we are our own experts when we learn to listen to our living, breathing environment. Our bodies will tell us what we are lacking and what we need, if only we give it the space to speak to us. Emily discusses her journey from dis-ease to health with water and how changing her relationship with water impacted her whole body including the aesthetic of her physical self and skin. She delves into how she began to feel that the water she was consuming was a living force and was learning how to care for herself through simple mindful consumption of this resource. She confesses she hid for years behind a mask of makeup, and how it finally felt to show her face to her husband who in all the years of marriage had never seen her without makeup on.
We touch on the topic of water on its own as the fundamental fountain of youth, and how imperative it is to care and protect this environmental resource. Our health is inextricably tied up in the health of our water that has circulated around this planet since time immemorial, holding important information to nourish all of our cells from inside out and outside in.

  • TRU Beauty Confessions is a part of the EcoParent Podcast Network: https://www.ecoparent.ca/podcasts

    About the Episode:

In launching this dig into the beauty narrative, we felt it would be necessary as a starting place to get clarity of who we may be speaking to in our wider community. We sat with women from varying backgrounds, ages and lifestyles. We will be unpacking the truths involving our relationship with beauty and the way this impacts how we treat ourselves and others, the way we see ourselves, and feel in our bodies.

We realized there can be no Green Beauty movement without understanding that true beauty is much more than skin deep. This is not a cliché but an intellectual understanding that beauty is a vibration or a frequency, it is something that we are able to ‘feel.’ This feeling of ‘beautiful’ is what unlocks our individual magic and prowess in our everyday lives.

We will explore the four pillars of beauty, encompassing our physical, mental, emotional, and energetic selves. Our physical beauty pillar includes the ways by which we support our bodies with exercise, food, water and products, along with our physical appearance. Our mental beauty pillar includes the knowledge we have about our bodies and why they appear as they do at various stages in life and/or circumstances. Our emotional beauty pillar explores the way we feel about ourselves based on psychological, cognitive, societal, and/or hormonal influences. The energetic beauty pillar focuses on our vibration or frequency that we are emitting through reflection, self-love, self-care, spiritual practice, meditation, or anything that brings us into a closer relationship with our energetic body.

When these beauty pillars are not in balance, then how we feel about ourselves has little to do with how we look. Although we can be bombarded with images of what is beautiful, the conditioned shame and guilt that accompanies this fed narrative only works to confuse and silence us on this topic, keeping a divide between who we are told to be and who we really are.

    Guests:

Celeste Morrisseau is a 21-year indigenous young woman living downtown Toronto working as a telecommunications agent trying to figure out how to move through what can be a complex and difficult dating scene. She is honest about anxiety, depression and how she is coming to terms with beauty standards as a more full figure in today’s world and whether men really accept the ‘thick’ girl, while what it means to see beauty in another.

Kate is 45, a mother of three, and attempting to embrace many new life changes including a change of career and lifestyle, along with a heightened awareness of what it means to acknowledge and love the evolving female body. Kate has recently retired from the position of a Special Education Teacher and is embarking on an environmental green dream of manufacturing unique and super classy tiny homes with her partner Andrew Miller.
