‘Generous, patient and tenacious’ are the three words Des Flanagan says sum him up and always have. Des is a boy from Beechworth in regional Victoria, who found himself performing in the Moulin Rouge kicking a leg, singing some of the greatest love songs ever written and having the time of his life. In his first lead role in a mainstage show, Des spent two years and 10 months playing the lead male protagonist Christian 657 times. His love for the stage began with little concerts with his siblings curated for their parents, until Des realised that family fun was to become his destiny. What followed was years of study at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts, beginning his career in musical theatre. While Des has starred in Neighbours and a few short films, he’s definitely ruled IN doing some great Australian film work in the future.

  • When Peggy O’Neal AO emigrated from the United States to Australia in 1991, she had no idea she was about to fall in love with a community and a game that would shape her new life. Perhaps it was fate that she moved to Richmond in Melbourne’s east, donned the local team’s footy jumper, and learnt about footy tipping – all moments that would eventually lead her to become the first woman in AFL history to serve as a club president at the Richmond Tigers. Peggy, who is a superannuation and financial lawyer, broke that glass ceiling but admits there is much more to do and says being deliberate in striving for gender equality in leadership is always front of mind. While sport is one of her passions, education is another – values instilled in her by her parents when she was a child – and she now gives back as Chancellor of RMIT University, and you heard it here first, Peggy is writing a children’s book!

  • Richard Baker is one of Australia’s most creative, engaging and groundbreaking investigative journalists with five Walkley Awards and 15 Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards to his name. And when it comes to creating compelling and unique audio, Richard is world class with the likes of Phoebe’s Fall, Wrong Skin and The Last Voyage of The Pong Su in his podcast back catalogue. Investigative journalism requires patience and perseverance, which Richard has in spades, but his key to developing solid story ideas comes from the art of observation. He never leaves home without his notebook but does leave judgement at the door in pursuit of his craft and seeking out the truth. Following a successful career at The Age newspaper Richard took the leap and launched a premium storytelling company with the ambition to be the southern hemisphere’s best independent creator of podcasts, documentaries and limited series.

  • He’s a charismatic publican, musician and martial arts referee. And there isn’t anything Greg ‘Clanger’ Kleynjans puts his mind to that he doesn’t do with 100% passion and a good sense of humour. He’s the kind of guy who knows everyone and has done A LOT, but you wouldn’t know it because words like humble and genuine sum up this one in a million human. Clanger is a true storyteller, with a back catalogue of material to work with. He’s not just a former fighter himself but has officiated hundreds of Mixed Martial Arts fights across Australia, the US, China, Japan and beyond. He also played a key role creating one of the AFL’s greatest dynasties of the modern era (the Richmond Tigers). Oh and if you haven’t heard of the band the Shandy Butchers, then listen in, because that yarn is frankly a clanger!

  • Changing his name from Andrew to Osher (meaning happiness in Hebrew) may have been an ‘aggressive rebrand’ but for Osher Günsberg it helped put a space between the “him who was drinking and using and the him that got to live the rest of his life not being that guy anymore.” Years on, Osher is raw and real when he speaks about mental illness, addiction, sobriety and death. In recounting his journey from hosting the hit TV shows Australian Idol and The Bachelor, to his breakthrough radio days, and now as a best-selling author, successful podcaster and passionate Dad, photographer and cyclist, Osher doesn’t leave anything unsaid and works to inspire others as we all navigate the ups and downs of life.

If you loved Part 1 of Osher’s raw and real story, don’t miss Part 2. In this episode, Osher dives even deeper into his journey through mental illness, addiction, sobriety, and confronting death. He leaves nothing unsaid, sharing his experiences to inspire others as we all navigate the ups and downs of life.

  • Episode 8: Tansel Ali

Tansel Ali used to have a terrible memory. He’d forget people’s names, conversations he’d just had, numbers, and even had difficulties remembering what he just read. It was when he started learning ‘memory techniques’ that he realised his memory wasn’t bad, it was just untrained. Tansel was in his early 20s when he discovered memory training, at the same time he learned he needed serious stomach surgery, having been diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. So while he recovered in hospital he put his mind to work. Since then, Tansel has been crowned four-time Australian Memory Sports Champion, memorised two Yellow Pages phone books, authored two books, created educational initiatives for schools and helped people with dyslexia, ADHD, as well as high performance athletes, keynote speakers and corporate leaders.

**We would like to say an extra special thank you to Tansel for recording this episode with us just a few days after his Dad had passed away, we so appreciated his willingness to sit down and chat and be so open. Our condolences to Tansel and his family**

  • Episode 7: Penelope Jordan

A bike rave, Korean BBQ, bouldering and pole dancing are just a handful of new things the First Timers Club has tried, since kicking off in January 2024. And Penelope Jordan couldn’t be more thrilled that her idea for a club for curious grown-ups looking to connect with others, has taken off. The genesis for FTC came after she returned from a stint overseas and following Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns, when she and her friend Rosie held their first activity when it was just the two of them. But the popularity has grown, where complete strangers come together to do a thing, realising the ‘first time’ isn’t necessarily about the activity, but rather getting past the fear and anxiety of showing up in the first place.

  • Episode 6: Ben Northey

Music was in Benjamin Northey’s blood from a young age, and he credits his teachers at Ballarat Clarendon College for encouraging his path into music where he studied flute, clarinet and saxophone. But it was the belief and mentorship of John Hopkins who encouraged Ben, at age 29, to be the first candidate for his new Master of Music in Conducting degree at the Victorian College of the Arts and Music that he will never forget. Now as Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor, Artistic Advisor Learning and Engagement of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ben says he’s one of the luckiest people he knows because he loves what he does. From conducting orchestras the world over, to collaborating with big names including Tim Minchin, James Morrison, Sting and Hilltop Hoods, Ben is living his dream and is ever grateful for those who helped him get there.

  • Episode 5: Megan Waters

“Life is short. Live it fully and healthily.” It’s an important mantra for Megan Waters, borne from a very hard life lesson. Losing her Dad and best friend not only broke her for a time, but it also gave her the strength to refocus her life, redefine what health and wellness means to her, and find a new path forward. Megan is now the presenter of NITV’s Yokayi Footy, a Nike Trainer, ambassador and host, breathwork facilitator, and as a proud Warumungu/Yawuru woman, raised on Larrakia Country in Darwin, her connection to culture and country is a strong and a significant passion. While she has made Melbourne home, there’s nothing she loves more than returning to Darwin, taking her shoes off, and sinking into the earth there, that grounds her. • Episode 4: James Van Cuylenburg

Ask Dr James Van Cuylenburg if he’d rather be a rock star or clinical psychologist and he simply can’t choose between his two loves. James spends his days helping others navigate life, and by night moonlighting on the stage as the great Billy Joel, among other music legends, performing across Victoria. While James primarily works with adults, couples and families in his day job, his fascination with how we are shaped as children remains a big focus, especially tapping into the child self and embracing the joy of childhood and the importance of imagination, play and fun. But he’s candid about what he sees as the biggest challenge for humans today, and that’s the growing need for self-acceptance and self-compassion, and his wish and goal to teach as many people as possible to give a generous read of themselves as they do for others.

  • Episode 3: Callum Linnane

Callum Linnane’s love affair with dance began at the age of seven at his primary school in Ballarat. And his determination, perfectionist tendencies and unbreakable work ethic underpinned his rise through the ranks of The Australian Ballet to be named Principal Artist in 2022 – a role he relished from a young age. Despite this incredible achievement, Callum is a humble human, described in Harper’s Bazaar as “the boy-next-door with a tinge of rock star he doesn’t know he possesses. His presence walks into a room before his body does.” Callum may have climbed this mountain, but he isn’t done yet, and his biggest wish is to build a better world where people are free to try new things and not ridiculed for their choices.

  • Episode 2: Ed Barlow

It was never on Ed Barlow’s radar to become a psychologist. But his time as an AFL player dealing with injuries, feedback, non-selection and more, led him down the path to better understand himself, and in turn sparked a love in helping others do the same. From professional athletes and sporting organisations to juveniles in detention Ed is passionate to see everyone mentally manage the best they can through the ups and the downs of life. And his life hasn’t been without its challenges, growing up on the south coast of New South Wales, his family home was lost in a fire, taking with it many memories and mementos. Now at peace with what happened then, Ed embraces life, family, sport and his very special furry best friend, who barely leaves his side.

  • Episode 1: Holly Ransom

“Honey, if you walk past it, you tell the world it’s okay.” It was these words from her grandmother as a five-year-old that set Holly Ransom on her path. That quote is etched in her mind and something she checks in with regularly, as a yard stick for where she and we as a society are now and where we’re headed. From that moment on, she embraced leadership, as the youngest person internationally to have been a Rotary Club President, a Port Adelaide Football Club Board member, the CEO of Emergent, author of The Leading Edge, Chair of the Pride Cup, one of the AFR's '100 Most Influential Australian Women', internationally acclaimed speaker and leadership trailblazer. Day in day out, Holly inspires leaders across the globe to turn knowledge into action for real-world change. But most of all, she’s a down to earth human who loves having a laugh.

  • Episode 8: Dom Price

Atlassian work futurist, keynote speaker, travel fanatic, and a loving husband and father, are just some of the ways to describe Dom Price. Others include unique, focused, open, raw and enabler. Dom’s superpower is his ability to inspire people to transform their working lives, and with it, their futures. He’s also about disrupting his own; he doesn’t have a daily routine, he doesn’t plan, and is open to the opportunities that come his way. But his life hasn’t been without challenges, as he openly reveals in his TEDx Talk in 2020 which catapulted him into a new dimension (see link below to watch). His focus on ‘others’ extends beyond the boardroom, with his generous support of non-profit organisation ‘Room to Read’ which focuses on literacy and gender equality in education.

  • Episode 7: Emily Mannix

Emily Mannix is a kid from country Victoria who loves her family and having a laugh as much as she loves sport. She was initially taken by individual sports like cross-country, swimming and surf lifesaving, but it was netball and being part of a team that stole her heart from age six. As a Melbourne Vixen and Australian Diamonds player, she has experienced winning championships at the highest levels, to being dropped from the national team, and everything in between. Through it all Emily has discovered her inner strength, developed resilience and learned to speak up in the face of challenges. As a senior player, she loves nothing more than helping to support and grow her younger teammates and is finding a new voice off the court as a co-host on the BackStoppers Podcast presented by Deakin University.
