    WPR042: Learning to Ask for Help with Kate Turza

    Episode Summary: I had such a great conversation with our guest, Kate Turza today.  Kate and I just had a very real, very honest discussion about why it’s SO damn hard to ask for help these days, even when we feel like we’re drowning.  As working parents we have a ton on our plate, and it can feel like we’re expected to do everything ourselves and do it all well.  But that’s not how we’re meant to operate.  We’re SUPPOSED to have a tribe.  We’re supposed to rely on a village to get through it all.  And I’ll let you in on a little secret… if you try to do it all alone, you’re GOING to burnout.  We need help from time to time and the better you get at asking for that support, the more manageable (and enjoyable!) your life will be.  But these days we’re not as connected to our support systems the way we were in generations past. So we chat about how she as a postpartum doula helps new moms and dads manage those early days of parenthood in a healthy way that integrates who they are with who they are becoming.  We talk a lot about those early days of parenthood but the principles we discuss will apply to parents at all stages of parenting. Kate Turza is a mom of 3 beautiful, energetic, and loving kiddos and CAPPA certified postpartum doula. After experiencing a trying postpartum period after her third child was born, she began her training to become a postpartum doula. She’s passionate about normalizing the postpartum and early motherhood period. In addition to doing in-home services in her area, she provides support online.     WPR041: How I Get Sleep Without Sleep Training My Kids

    Episode Summary: We talk about our kids’ sleep in passing, so it’s hard to get the full context of the struggles and realities of baby sleep over time.  So I’m just going to pull back the curtains and tell you everything that’s going on in our home. I’m going to share what I feel like I did wrong when it came to my boys’ sleep, and what ended up working for us as a family instead. I feel like it’s hard to get the complete story about baby sleep from other parents, so I just want to give you a full picture of my experience and what I’ve learned over the years. What worked for me may or may not fit for you, but I wanted people out there to know that there are other alternatives to sleep training if you’re struggling to get enough sleep yourself and aren’t sure if you want to sleep train your kids.  I had a different topic scheduled for today, but since Dr. Pam Douglas and I didn’t have a lot of time to talk about the practical things you could do if you’re struggling to get sleep as a parent whose child isn’t sleep trained in the last episode, I wanted to take a little extra time to share with you the things that I’ve found to be helpful after I decided not to sleep train my kids.     WPR040: What You Need to Know About Infant Sleep with Dr. Pam Douglas

    Episode Summary:  I’m really excited to welcome our guest today, Dr. Pam Douglas of the Possums Clinic in Australia.  Back in episode WPR023 which I recorded right after I had my second little boy, I talked a lot about infant sleep.  I shared that getting my older son, who’s 4 now, to sleep was one of the most stressful and difficult experiences of my life, and then I shared what I’m doing differently with our younger son, who’s four months old. Pam is an Australian General Practitioner and researcher who specializes in early life care. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Maternity Newborn and Families Research Collaboration, Griffith University. Pam is passionate about supporting new parents so that life with their baby is as enjoyable as possible. Over the past 20 years, she has developed the programs known as Neuroprotective Developmental Care, or the Possums Programs, which help with breastfeeding and feeds, sleep, baby's crying and fussing, and parental mood.     WPR037: Helping Your Kids Manage Technology with Emily Jameson

    Episode Summary:  Today we have a very special guest with us.  Today I am going to interview my sister, Emily Jameson.  She’s a few years younger than I am, but she’s always been one of my parenting role models since she had four kids by the time I had my first.  She always has such a common sense advice for me, and she and I recently had a great conversation about technology as it relates to our kids, and I wanted to share that with you guys at home. Emily is also one of those people who is rocking working parenthood.  She has four kids who range in age from 4-12.  And her husband often has to travel for work, so she’s managing all of that on her own a lot of the time.  So that alone would be enough to make me fall apart by the end of the day.  But Emily also went back to school last year to become a nurse.  And then, on top of all of that, she gets up at 4:30 every, single morning to go to a Camp Gladiator fitness class.  I’ll have her share more about all of that, but seriously – my little sister is amazing.     WPR036: How to Manage Different Stages of Conflict in Your Marriage

    Episode Summary: We chat a lot about productivity and time management and boundaries and all sorts of other things that help with one of the biggest problems that working parents have: not having enough time.  And I love talking about this stuff because I know it really is one of the biggest struggles modern working families face – trying to fit everything into their busy lives.  And I have 20 years of experience in the project management field, so I’m happy to chat about this as much as I can. But I’ve spent over two decades completely immersed in studying the various elements of healthy committed relationships.  This is a topic that I’ve been obsessed with for most of my life.  I’ve read as many books as I could get my hands on.  I’ve had countless conversations with people who are genuinely happy in their relationships.  I even went to grad school to get my Master’s degree in this subject.  And it also seems to be an area that lends itself to either a lot of joy as a working parent if you and your partner are working as a team, or on the flip side, a lot of frustration and overwhelm if things aren’t going well in your relationship. I think I’ve mentioned this at some point in a past episode, but my parents got divorced when I was 5 years old, and were both remarried by the time I was 10.  While I adjusted and learned to adapt to my new life as a child, I can look back and see the long-term effects of being raised in a blended family.  For a long time, I didn’t even think I wanted to get married myself because I just couldn’t understand how I could possibly make it work.  I didn’t have all that many positive role models for a functional marriage.  Of course, I agree that there are times when it’s best for the whole family if a couple gets divorced, and I’m sure that’s true in my situation.  But it didn’t make my life any easier, and I had a lot of relationship drama throughout most of my life as a direct result of my early life experiences. But after years and years of learning about relationships, and applying what I learned to my own relationships, and then meeting my awesome husband Joey and building my own family with him, I’ve discovered that there are a lot of different things that you can do to build and maintain a healthy and happy relationship with your spouse, even when you have kids and a busy career. But what I also learned after we had kids was that even the most solid and stable relationships can be rocked when you’re dealing with the realities of being a working parent.  There are a LOT of stressors that come up when you’re trying to juggle so many important things, and we’re living in hyper-speed these days.  There’s not a lot of time to mindfully resolve the issues that come up for us with our partner. And in both situations, whether you’re happy and solid as a couple, or whether you’re struggling in your marriage, they both tend to come down to how you manage conflict. This is the one of the main reasons I started the Working Parent Resource.  Helping working parents strengthen their relationships and build a stable home environment for their kids without giving up who they are as individuals is really important to me.  The busier we get, the harder it is to make our marriage a priority.  And the longer we wait to resolve both the big issues and the little ones, the more conceivable it is that our marriage won’t stand up to the stress. I know so many of you feel exhausted and stressed out, and many people attribute that to not having enough time, which is totally valid so that’s why we talk a lot about that.  But when I talk about blending the different aspects of your lives in a sustainable way as a busy working parent, I have one goal in mind: to help you acquire the tools you need to stay happy and fulfilled in your personal life without sacrificing your professional life so the foundation of your family is less likely to crumble beneath you.  I guess in my own little way, it’s my attempt to protect other kids out there from the fear and sadness that I felt growing up as a child.  I want to help as many people as I can avoid the destruction that can happen to a family when you don’t have the tools to manage the conflict that inevitably arises in a marriage when you have young kids. So with that said, today we’re going to talk about the three stages of conflict you may find yourself experiencing in your marriage, and some practical things you can do to begin managing and resolving that conflict in a healthy way.  I don’t just want to help you avoid an unhappy marriage or divorce… I want to give you the resources you need to build a solid foundation for a connected and engaged relationship that will persist through these challenging early years.     WPR035: How to Get Your Kids on a Routine with Erin Montgomery

    Episode Summary:  I’ve always been a creature of habit, so establishing a routine for my kids was never that difficult for me.  Plus as someone who has spent decades learning about child development, I knew going into parenthood that creating a routine for my kids would be an important part of building consistency and security for them.  But I know it’s not always easy for everyone to establish a routine for their kids, so I wanted to cover this topic in case you’re having a hard time.  Today’s guest shares with us her personal experience as a mom and how she’s been able to create an effective routine for her kids.  Erin Montgomery is the mom of a 6 year-old and a 4 year-old.     WPR034: How to Set Boundaries and Say No to Protect Your Time with Monica Froese

    Episode Summary:  I’m going to start today’s episode by saying something that might make some of you angry.  But I need to share a little tough love with all of you working parents out there.  Here it is: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your over-booked schedule, if you don’t have enough time, it’s for one reason and one reason only:  because you aren’t setting boundaries around your time.  You either don’t know how, or you aren’t comfortable, saying NO to other people. There are a hundred excuses I hear from working parents who are overwhelmed: I have too much on my plate. My husband doesn’t do anything around the house. I don’t have enough help. My job (or my boss) is super-demanding. My kids are still young and they need me. I’m the person people rely on to get things done. All of this is CODE for: “I haven’t learned how to set boundaries in my life.” Do extenuating circumstances arise?  Are there times that are busier than others?  Of course.  It’s life and sometimes things are going to be busier than others.  And as working parents, you’re in a particularly complex season of life where you’re raising kids who really do need a lot of attention and support, while juggling a demanding job as well.  So don’t get me wrong… I have a lot of empathy for you if you really DO have a full plate and are just trying to keep up. But if the common theme in your life is overwhelm and burnout and you rarely have times of peace and calm, then it’s not about the various circumstances of your life.  It’s about how you’re MANAGING your life.  It is possible to have a FULL life without constantly feeling stressed out and at your wits end. So today I’m talking with Monica Froese about the steps you can take to begin setting boundaries in your life, and how you can start becoming comfortable with doing it so it doesn’t jeopardize your relationships or your reputation or everything you’ve accomplished so far in your life.  We’ll go into how you can set boundaries around your time when everyone needs something from you… because that’ll never end.  There will always be demands on your time.  So you need to become really good at saying NO and doing it gracefully so you don’t alienate the most important people in your life.  Monica and I had an awesome discussion on episode WPR009 about embracing your ambition without the guilt.  We had such a great time chatting that I invited her to come back on to talk with me about setting boundaries and saying no and protecting your precious time as a working parent.     WPR029: How to Navigate Polarizing Conversations

    Episode Summary: The world has been a little crazy lately, hasn’t it?  I don’t typically talk about politics on this show because that’s not the main focus of what we do here.  I don’t want it to distract from the purpose on the podcast, which is to help career-oriented moms and dads integrate all aspects of their lives without having to sacrifice one area over another.  So we’re not going to discuss politics here today.  But as someone who does pay attention to what’s happening in the world, I thought it was important to acknowledge the discourse and divisiveness that’s we’ve seen on the news and on social media recently.  Things have gotten SO heated on a global level, and I think it’s time we starting thinking a little more about how we address people who disagree with us on fundamental issues. I see a lot of parallels between what’s been happening around the world, and what we deal with as parents on a daily basis.  There are a lot of polarizing topics coming to a head on the world stage, but I see the same sort of discourse in how we discuss parenting issues as well.  There are some hot button issues we deal with as parents, such as vaccinations, breastfeeding, sleep training, and many others.  I’ve seen more than a few discussions about these topics become hateful very quickly. For many of these topics, there’s no one right answer.  There is plenty of research to support all sorts of opinions about how to do things.  But as a society I think we’ve gotten into this habit of thinking in binary terms where if I’m convinced of something, you’re wrong unless you completely agree with me.  We’ve lost the ability to appreciate and explore nuance as we discuss a wide range of topics.  So today I want to dive a little deeper into HOW we talk about polarizing topics.  How do we TALK to each other in a more respectful and productive way?  How can we let go of our need to be right, and start LISTENING to each other in a way that will move these conversations forward? Whether we’re talking about politics, or human rights issues, or race, or immigration, or whether we’re talking about any number of decisions that you’ll make as a parent, I think these guidelines for a healthier conversation will still apply.  These are just some thoughts that I wanted to share with you.  This obviously isn't a conclusive list.  And I also don't want it to sound like I do all of these things all the time.  I have my moments where I'm not as constructive as I could be.  But I did want to take a moment to think about how we could all be dealing with some of these difficult conversations a little better.  Show Notes:  http://workingparentresource.com/29 Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode: [FREE MASTERCLASS] What’s Behind Your Burnout?     WPR028: Five Steps to Finding Your Confidence as a Parent with Dr. Marie Renaud

    Episode Summary:  Today we’re talking about building your confidence as a parent.  If you’ve read my blog post entitled “The Hardest Thing About Being a Parent,” you’ll know that I had a very hard time adjusting to all of the new things you have to learn when you become a parent.  As an overachiever in my life before kids, I was used to learning new skills and mastering them.  To put it bluntly, I was used to being GOOD at things in my life.   And one of the hardest things I had to do as a parent was realize that I was never going to be perfect at it.  Our kids change all the time and it was really disorienting to have to adapt and adjust to every new developmental stage that my child went through, especially in those early days when he was changing so FAST.  Our guest today offers some wonderful insights and 5 practical tips to build confidence, even when these little ones change the rules of the game on us.  Dr. Marie Renaud is a doctor in Clinical Psychology with 30 years of experience working in the public service in Scotland. She has particular expertise in the areas of relationships between parents and children and in fostering close relationships with babies. The focus of her work has been to collaborate with families and support them to develop and maintain the best relationships with their children.     Episode Summary:  Today’s episode is close to my heart, because I went through my own experience with Adrenal Fatigue and it was ruining my life.  I just thought I was tired and burned out, so I kept trying to come up with more ways to be productive, to get more done in less time.  But it turns out that was just perpetuating my symptoms.  I was exhausted.  I was cranky.  I kept landing in urgent care with what I thought was strep throat, and was about to have surgery even though my doctors didn’t have a real diagnosis for what I was experiencing.  I also had trouble getting pregnant for nearly a year, which I also think was related to my own Adrenal Fatigue.  I had no idea that’s what I was dealing with, and once I identified Adrenal Fatigue as the cause of my health issues, I was able to treat it and finally start feeling like myself again within a month. Jennifer Blossom is the millennial expert of holistic living for mothers and children. She is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapist, Certified Infant Massage Instructor and Holistic Lifestyle Entrepreneur.     WPR026: Four Fundamental Shifts I Made that Changed My Life
