My player spotlight guest played her freshmen basketball at Wichita Heights and is currently playing summer AAU ball for MoKan Elite she will be a sophomore stands about 5'8" with a lot of upside to her game. Destiny Maze is a student of the game who credits her 19 year old brother for being an influence on her basketball career a sport she's been playing since she was 3 years old. Had the honor of having two coaches corner segments firstr with Jon Warren Assistrant Coach at Langston University and HC of AAU team Bleessed OK. Jon joined LU and HC Chris Wright's staff in June 2022. Warren served as team captain for three years as he played for Coach Wright at Central Baptist College for on season and then two seasons at Talladega college. She was first team Kansas Class 5A 1st team and Player of the year and played a key role in Maize South ending a dominating run knocking off 7X Class 5A defending champs St. Thomas Aquinas in Class 5A Semi-Finals. Also the passing of O.J. Simpson at the age of 76 in his battle with cancer. In this episode we talked about his journey that led him to Derby, and what the Derby experience has been like. We talked about some amazing performances in state tournament and the seniors that paved the way for Derby and left it's mark on the program. Maize South Lady Mavs a #2 seed faced a #7 seed and 7 time defending state champion in St. Thomas Aquinas and entered as an underdog. The game went into overtime as Maize South pulled out the win led by Skylar Seals 24 points on 6-8 FG's and 5-7 3pt FG's as Ashley Singhateh chipped in with 19. Andover also won it's quarter final game knocking off Blue Valley SW as they were led in scoring by another freshman phenom in Bella Bouddhara's 19 points followed by Brook Walker with 16 and Aliyah Green with 12. The Sub-States have been settled, teams have punched there tickets to the big dance known as the State tournament in classes 6A-1A-ll. I want to say let the Madness begin but, it already has as evidenced by the Blue Aces of Wichita East High having pulled of the upset to get to the dance.
