  • Repressing emotions is abuse.

Speaking with clinical psychologist Dr Nathan Baumann today we have a fascinating conversation about the psychology of emotions especially with men and boys.

He talks about how most emotions are not allowed and how that impacts society.

He also talks about what he feels about having no space for emotions like in a lot of boarding schools.

He feels it is emotional abuse.

    A fascinating conversation. Very enlightening.

    ---

Dr. Nathan Baumann is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Colorado. He has advanced specialization in integrated health care, health psychology, sleep disorders, substance abuse, and sports psychology. His research efforts have focused on health behavior changes over the lifespan and has advanced training in the interplay between physical health, mental health, and environmental factors.

    Question for Nathan:

I would love for you to share some of your journey. How did you get into the work you now do?The "boys will be boys" way of thinking about the behavior of young boys is holding them to a bar that is too low for them to grow. What needs to happen?Processing and expressing emotions. What can we do to start processing and expressing in a healthier way?
Learning how to process and express emotions is an important part of development - when we reduce boys to only a few emotions, this not only hurts their ability to get their needs met but also makes them less likely to be able to effectively participate in relationships and meet the needs of others. What if these children were told that no emotions were okay? What can we do as men to support boys?
Men are often the worst offenders when it comes to setting and maintaining low expectations for boys - traditional masculine values do not include emotional intelligence or empathy as cornerstones of manhood, so they are often seen as a bonus rather than a requirement. How do we hold men to a higher standard?
Holding men to a higher standard is not erasing masculinity - it is correcting it. It allows for a wider experience of emotions, fewer demonstrations of intimidating anger displays due to a higher tolerance for unpleasant emotions, and overall fewer instances of isolation and improved mental health. Other areas to talk about:FathersPTSD and Complex PTSDAnxietyStress managementDepressionMood disturbances.

  • In today's video I talk about how important it was for us to be liked at boarding school.

If we weren't liked, we were often sent to coventry. We were banished.

Richard Beard in his book Sad Little Men, talks about how on any given year group there was alway one 'custos' - the outcast.

If you couldn't see the 'custos' then it was you.

I talk about compliers and people pleasers.

And how dangerous it was not to be liked at boarding school.

We couldn't just go home at the end of the day. If we weren't liked it followed us everywhere.

I talk about how controlling we can become as adults, following the rules that we learned at school.

If we are in politics or the bar or the corporate this often works as these systems were modelled on the boarding school world.

But in family life this can cause chaos.

I talk about what you can do to heal this.

    Take care,

    Piers

I talk about some of my own experiences of school and how I felt that I was in fear a lot of my time.

I talk about some of the fear-based beliefs I left boarding school with:
    - Fear of making mistakes
    - Fear of getting close to others
    - Fear of being ostacized
    - Fear of failure

I share some of Bear Gryll's experiences of fear at boarding school.

  • I have felt pretty shocked listening to reports about the Blood Scandal.

I was horrified to hear what had happened at the boarding school, Treloar's where many people died.

    It is another cover up.

Grenfell Tower, Windrush, Post Office Enquiry, Hillsborough...

Repeated calls for justice and recognition were ignored for years.

In today's podcast I talk about cover ups and the psychology of where many of our leaders learned to cover up, to hide, to mask the truth.

I draw upon the briliant work of Caroline Elkins and her book Legacy of Violence, about the British Empire, Nick Duffell's Wounded Leaders and Will Hutton.

  • What is the government doing regarding mandatory sexual reporting?

After £200 million spent on IICSA, Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, what has been the outcome?

Today's conversation is with two of the leading voices campaigning against child sexual abuse.

Lawyer and partner, Dino Nocivelli and author, Alex Renton.

What does this new amendment mean?

Alex Renton is a writer and journalist whose career has ranged from arts and food writing to politics and the investigation of child abuse. His career as a war reporter and development worker took him to the Middle East, Africa, East Asia and the Balkans. He has worked for The Independent, The Times, Newsweek, and the London Evening Standard and contributed to a host of other newspapers and magazines. Questions for Alex and Dino:

What's happening with regards the mandatory reporting, IICSA and the Criminal Justice Bill?

The government came out with the latest ruling regarding mandatory reporting last week. What was changed?Alexis Jay, the head of IICSA said that she was deeply disappointment by the new bill. Do you agree. If so why?“The measures are a sham – worse than useless: this legislation will put back the cause of getting good law in place to protect children today in any institution, from schools and care homes to hospitals and sports clubs.” Voices Unbound What can we do to turn this around? Who can we contact or speak to?

  • Is it common for people who have been to boarding school to have suicidal ideation?

And how many people have actually attempted suicide or taken their own life while at boarding school?

Today I share stories from Richard Branson's autobiography Losing My Virginity, Sir Ranulph Fiennes' Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know and Roald Dahl' biography.

I also share some quotes from Alex Renton and his book, Stiff Upper Lip and Pete Walker's book, Complex PTSD.

If you are feeling suicidal then please do contact Samaritans in the UK: https://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help/contact-samaritan/

  • PLEASE NOTE: We talk about sexual abuse in this episode which some viewers may find triggering.

Today's episode is with author Charles Spencer.

As I was preparing for the interview a line in his book really jumped out: "many of us left Maidwell with demons sewn into the seams of our souls."

What a heart-breaking and powerful turn of phrase.

One that I can really resonate with.

Today he talks about his childhood sexual abuse at boarding school, bullying, his sister, Diana, going off to boarding school and the impact of boarding school on children.

And what about the path of healing - what are the therapies and exercises that he has used to start healing? A very touching and powerful testimony to the legacy of boarding schools.

What does he think of under 13 boarding schools?

    ---

Charles Spencer is an author, a broadcaster, a podcaster, a British peer and the younger brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. He has recently published a memoir about his time at boarding school called, A Very Private School.

    Questions for Charles:
    1. I would love for you to share what drew you to write your memoir? Why now?
    2. When did you first start to realise the impact that your boarding school experiences had had on you?
    3. When you think of Maidwell, what's the one word that comes to mind?
    4. In your interview with Laura Kuenssberg you mentioned how your sister, Diana, said to your father when she was left at boarding school, “If you loved me, you wouldn't leave me here” How did your sister leaving for boarding school impact you?
    5. “What we suffered was not just a separation from all that we knew and loved, but an
amputation. ...it lacked the most important quality of a home: it was without love.”(P.9)
How did it impact you, to be without love?
    6. The physical violence. What went on at Maidwell regarding physical violence and
    discipline? (P.68) (P.87)
    7. “To keep his abusive system intact, Jack relied on concealment, collusion and cunning.” (P101) Could you please explain?
    8. Bullying. Could you please talk us through some of the bullying you experienced and
    witnessed? (P.189-199)
    9. Sexual abuse. If you feel comfortable to share, what happened when you were 11? (P.206-216)
    10. The political ramifications. How might the decision making of leaders who have been to these schools be affected?
    11. “Fascinating aberration” (P.6) What do you feel about boarding now? Do we need to open a debate into this practice? Do we need to abolish early boarding? What are your thoughts?
    12. Other topics to talk about:
    1. Showing emotions or “blubbing” (P.62)
    2. Abandonment (P.64)
    3. “I had been sent away because I had somehow fallen short as a son.” (P.107)
    4. Making yourself sick in order to get an adult to show me warmth and sympathy (P.108

  • Today I wanted to offer a review of Charles Spencer's new book, A Very Private School.

I spoke to Charles on Monday on my podcast which will be going live here on Friday: https://youtu.be/NJBGrRdgKm8

It was a really great conversation where Charles was very open about his boarding school experiences talking about sexual abuse, bullying, corporal punishment, his sister, Diana Princess of Wales and the ending of early boarding school.

Here I talk about some of the quotes and segments of the book that really stood out for me.

For last week's podcast with a paediatrician who I went to boarding school with please find it here: https://youtu.be/Aa8eicN-G0A

  • PLEASE NOTE: We talk about suicide and sexual abuse in this episode which some viewers may find triggering.

What was it like at Piers' boarding school? Today we talk to a man who lived in the same boarding house as Piers, the host of this podcast, for 7 years.

Today Dr William Verling, who is a consultant paediatrician, talks about what boarding school was like for him.

He also looks at it from his medical background – was there pastoral care, and safeguarding at this school?

    ---

Dr William Verling is a consultant paediatrician who has worked as a doctor for over 20 years. He is the creator of a new app to improve patient experience, the founder of ParentMed, a training resource for new parents and the lead for Chill, Dorset, a not-for-profit organisation that uses cold water therapy to help people with anxiety and depression.

    Some questions for Will:

I would love for you to share a little about what got you into the work you now do?You work as the safeguarding lead for your hospital. With the information you now know what is your honest opinion about our boarding school? If you were to sum up your boarding school experience in one word what would it be?Could you please talk about your experiences of boarding school. What was the food, and environment like?Could you please talk about the imposter syndrome. How does that relate to boarding school? How has boarding school impacted you as an adult?Others areas to talk about:Voldemort and the horcruxesSackler and the empire of painCH – death and griefCH – how emotions were receivedCH – bullyingDuplicityCH – Rick's death.
