  • This is Part 2 of my discussion with Liat who pumped while traveling to developing countries and conflict zones. In this part, we focus a bit more on the challenges women face when re-integrating into the workforce after having a baby. We talk about how HR departments and leaders of organizations as well as our male coworkers and peers can become advocates for helping mothers reacclimate. Remember, these women are your wives, sisters, daughters, mothers, friends, or other people you care about. I firmly believe that organizations are successful when men and women are equally represented and in all levels of the organization as they provide different strengths and opinions. We cannot just leave women behind by default, because they are by nature the child bearers and natural care takers. They bear the brunt of ensuring a future for our communities and it should not come at the cost of their own passions, dreams, careers or in some cases, the basic need to make a living and provide for their families. Listen to this episode to become an advocate or simply find out how you as a mother can approach your leaders and HR departments.

  • As if pumping and traveling was not already challenging enough, it becomes even more challenging when access to reliable electricity or clean water adds another obstacle. In this episode we talk to Liat who traveled to Developing Countries and Conflict Zones while having to pump for her son. This takes the Busy Mom Pumping to a whole other level as she speaks about her challenges of keeping the milk cold on a 10-hour flight, the difficult decision to pump and dump and ultimately how she donated milk to local hospitals. This is the first part of our interview as we focus our second part on the reintegration into the work force after having a baby.

  • Another profession where pumping is a challenge is the one where you are not on your own schedule, like a videographer/photographer who needs to work the hours of her event. Today I am talking to Merve whom I met in LA as a videographer, and we worked on a few events together. She now has her own production company and she pumps on set, behind the camera. How she does this we discuss in this episode.

  • Being a mom is hard. I think we have all established that. But what if your partner is gone for months at a time? This is what military families are faced with and today I am talking to my friend Anna about what motherhood looks like as a military family. We talk all about the support system that exists and where it lacks. How hard it is to keep a career and how to manage moving around, constantly. Add the formula shortage disaster and you have one episode filled with lots of hard hitting thruths and honest mom struggles.

  • First, I want to acknowledge that the “bounce back” culture is real. Moms are often expected to get back into pre-pregnancy weight before our kids are even 3 months old. I found it very difficult to work out my first year between the new baby, work and all the pumping – also – the decrease in milk supply.

This episode is not about “bouncing back” but about a mom who does what she loves without letting breastfeeding get in the way of that. If you are ready to get back into working out and want to get some inspiration, you should listen to this episode. Monica talks about how she ran the Austin and New York Marathon while pregnant and pumping. She goes through her flexible training schedule as well as how she mastered the challenge of a drop in her milk supply.

In this episode we also touch on tongue ties and VBAC – a vaginal birth after cesarean and how she was able to have her second child vaginally when she did have a cesarean with her first… it is possible!

I know Monica did not have a bra recommendation, but I would like to take this opportunity to once again suggest the Ollie Gray bra here!

  • Are you ready for your return to work? How was that first day? How do you prepare for it? How do you start your day? Did you have anyone helping you? What do I need to do to be ready to pump at work? All of this and more is what I talk about in this episode with my friend Andy. The return to work is not easy. Think about it; for most of us, we just had our body go through an extreme event aka birth. We are sleep deprived. We are out of practice and lack conditioning in the ability to be mentally on for an 8-hour day – let alone, look presentable and awake during that time. So I asked my friend Andy if she would do a simple episode with me while we are in the thick of it. We recorded this on a Wednesday evening, week 3 back at work, and you can tell how tired we are. If I am being 100% honest, I did have to edit out a lot of “uhms” and breaks as our brains were literally on “loading” mode – even with supportive husbands and the lucky ability to hire a nanny. I don’t know how some other families do it without all that support.

I hope you enjoy this episode and I hope it helps you feel less alone during your first day back at work when you feel like you just became more stupid and worry if you can handle being a busy mom – you can! It does get better!

The Pumps: Get help getting your pump through insurance with Aeroflow Breastpumps

Spectra S2 – My favorite. It gets the most out. To make it portable, get a battery pack.

Willow Pump – amazing for on the go pump and traveling. But it does not get as much out. Would not use as main pump

Pump In Style® with MaxFlow™ Breast Pump – I have no preference between this one and the Pump in Style. It is good but not better than the spectra. This is also the pump Andy has now and she said she liked it better.

Pump in Style Insurance Breast Pump – Square format made it fit well into pump bag or luggage when traveling. No preference between this one and the Pump in Style with MaxFlow – This is the one Andy said hurt her more when she first pumped for her daughter Laura.

Duo Double Electric Breast Pump – this one is a cheap portable option. I got this solely for that reason so I could review a cheaper portable pump. It Is not as powerful as the spectra but comparable to the Pump in Style. So this is a great option for the on the go pumps.

  • Are you new here and wondering what this podcast is about? Want to know what inspired me to make this podcast? Then this is a great quick listen and introduction.
Show Notes and Transcript: Welcome to the Busy Mom Pumping Podcast. My name is Lene and Let me start off by saying that if you are squeamish about anything including boobs, this podcast is not for you, because we will be talking a lot about them.

Before I start, let me ask you some questions: Are you a mom or about to be a mom, that has the wish to continue breastfeeding after the maternity leave is over but you don’t just quite know how because your google search only gave you a blanket approaches, that would be hard to tailor to your day to day?

Have you communicated to your boss yet that you will need to pump when you return to work? Oh he is male, this might be a bit awkward? Is the only available room a storage closet and your pumping breaks will be frequented by the school genitor who will fall over in shame when he finds you attached to that farming equipment, I mean pumps.

Oh you are saying that you already pumped with your first baby, and the spilled milk at TSA, the embarrassing encounters with the janitor who was not the janitor but a colleague sleeping in the pump room has left you to just forget about it.

Are you just hear to have a good laugh, to hear from your peers and get some inspiration. If you are saying a, b, c or all of the above then this is Podcast is for you!

As I have said, my name is Lene – and I was a Busy Mom Pumping with my daughter Lotti,

Who, at the beginning of my journey, was more like a soulless gremlin from another galaxy.

I did this craziness for a year and, yay me, I am about to get to do it all over again.

For me, my pumping journey was one that was very lonely

(cause really, …… who wants to have an audience)

It was a journey filled with a bunch of questions….., challenges and amazingly,…. a community of friends helping me along the way.

    Now, Let me quickly back up here;

I grew up in the southern parts of Germany in a very rural area and our school fields trips included visits to local farms

There we learned all about how chickens laid eggs and milk was … lets say.. “harvested”.

(no there was no sweet famers wife gently massaging milk out of a cows udder)

… You know where I am going with this…

Let’s just say….. the first time I attached those pumps…… I was immediately catapulted back to those field trips – sharing a deep compassion and companionship with these peacefully mooing, ….. grass chewing mama cows. And still no gentle massaging hands in sight.

    But Companionship.

That is what I was really missing.

And it was quite depressing that the only… beings I felt connected to in that moment were a bunch of mammals chewing away on their grass stems in some stall back in Germany.

So when someone suggested I join a Moms group for a hefty $350 for 6 weeks I was more than happy to hand over my wallet and join these wonderful strangers.

You know…. discuss things like broken vaginas, hurting c-sections, cracked nipples, or anything that would have been depicted in the Frida Mom’s Super bowl commercial that was rejected from the big line up. And you know what, the talking helped!

But when it came to the return to work and how to fit pumping into our busy lives, we were still a bit helpless. The internet did not give us much either because a lot of the suggestions were blanket approaches and did not address the vast variety of schedules/challenges that different professions bring with them.

This lack of information is what led me to start this podcast. I wanted to find different Moms in different versions of Busy sharing their stories, challenges and words of wisdom. And I hope that they become an inspiration to you. That their stories give you some comfort either while you are planning your return to your busy life or actively in it, pumping in some tucked away location.

Also, this is a judgement free zone:

This podcast is not here to say that breastfeeding is the best and only way to feed your child. That literally is everyone’s own prerogative. As a mom, your only job is to feed your baby, if that is breastmilk, formula or you skip straight to that hot coco with marshmallows, that is your choice.

Through my talks with different moms, I have learned that the choice to breastfeed is not that simple, there are so many different factors that play into this journey and often the biggest challenge is the return to work. I therefore want to acknowledge that we will not have all the answers, but I hope that we at least have some.

    Lastly, my disclaimer:

As the title says, this podcast is produced by Busy Moms, and editing a podcast takes a lot of time (geez who would have thought) So while we try our best that the content is valuable, I cannot promise that the quality is on a 5 Star Winning level (I am not looking to win the Oscar of Podcast)

With that I also want to point out that my own personal schedule would not allow for me to post a new episode each week. I therefore decided to treat this like a Netflix Show where I will record 5 – 7 interviews at a time and post them all at once. This allows for more flexibility in my and my guests’ schedule. Hey, a tip for you too. Did you know you can listen to your pod cast spead up? I know you are also busy and if you want to cut down on the length o the episode, feel free to spead us up 😊

As a reference for you to follow up on each episode, please check out my show notes at busymompumping.com

So I hope you laugh with us and cry with us. That you find your own way through this journey with our tips and tricks and that you do not loose your beautiful self in this pumping journey that often seemed to me like my sole purpose was to produce milk so my child could thrive and survive.

I will therefore leave you with a fun fact an that is that, cows pump around 8 gallons of milk a day, this comparison is just simply not fair to us and hence, not even worth to be entertained.

  • Did you feel anxiety, irritation, sadness, or depression when you pumped/breastfed? Is this maybe even the reason you stopped? If so, you might have had D-MER – something I have firsthand experience with. Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) is a condition affecting lactating women that is characterized by an abrupt dysphoria, or negative emotions, that occur just before milk release.

In this episode I talk to Alia who is the lactation consultant that first identified D-MER in 2007. She, herself, was a sufferer of D-MER while breastfeeding her third child and first described it as “a post-partum depression that comes and goes”. When she could not find anything on the topic, she started her own research and is now an international speaker and published writer on the topic.

I am willing to bet that most of you have not heard about D-MER, yet I am sure quite a few of us suffer from it. That is why it was very important to me to make an episode and I am very thankful to Alia for agreeing to talk to me. It was the first time I EVER talked to anyone about this and after we recorded the episode I was able to cope much better with my own D-MER symptoms.

  • The biggest help in both of my post-partum journeys were my doulas. When I tell any new mom this, often I get the response: “What is a doula?”. I found out about doulas because my friend in LA had one for the nights, allowing her to catch up on sleep after she came home from the hospital. But doulas are so much more than that and that is why I sat down with my own doula and created this episode. We recorded this episode 2 months after my son was born and we are literally passing him back and forth during this interview so you might hear him in the background.

In this episode we talk about Kendra’s own pumping story for her two kids but also about the Doula profession itself.

What is a doula? What is the difference between a Post-Partum Doula and a Birth Doula? What do they do and how can they help you in your birthing and post-partum journey?

How do you find a doula? What should you look for in a doula? How can a doula help you with breastfeeding? All of these are questions we discuss in this episode.

  • This episode is a quick look back at all the episodes that have aired so far as I reflect on what I have personally learned from my guests. It is a nice review, especially if you are just now joining us. You can listen to this episode and pick and choose which ones you feel might be worth listening to. Personally, these conversations have taught me a lot as I am embarking on my second round of breastfeeding but even beyond just breastfeeding, my guests have offered their advice on motherhood, parenting and career planning.

I want to thank all my amazing friends and guests for taking the time to talk to us and for being so open and honest when providing answers to my questions.

  • Sam is a Client Success Manager for a Data Company and she breastfed both of her son. Sam had to travel while pumping so she talks about how she pumped on the road, in the car and in a bathroom at a conference. She also mentioned that her second son had a tongue tie and how that affected her breastfeeding journey initially. If you have not heard about a tongue tie yet, this might be worth listening to 😊 Her advise was around making sure you get what you need to make the pumping journey easier and more successful. Some of her favorite products were:

    The Sepctra S1 cordless pump

    The Elvie

    Any kind of Handsfree Bra

    Kindred Bravely

    Milkmakers Lactation Cookies

    MoveMamaApparel

  • This interview took a direction I did not expect when I prepared my questions as my guest Lindsay answered the question of “who did you do it for?” with “ME!” This perspective is one that we had not really looked at yet and so I loved our conversation about doing this for yourself and treating it as a challenge. That comes with the need for an “Accountability Coach” and Mom Tribe. What a nice follow up to the discussion we had with Brandi. What we learned in this episode is that if you plan to breastfeed or pump that is up to you but if you do it, have help and someone cheering you on from the sidelines. If you do not, that is more than ok. There are so many other mommy skills to be good at and that we know you will rock!

We also talked about some feelings and how it is ok to not be ok and to ask for help when you need it!

    Products Mentioned:

    Milk Stork

    Freemie Cups

  • Brandi is one of the moms that I met in my Mom’s group at the Pump Station in Santa Monica, California. I refer to this group in my first Episode “The Cow” and how helpful finding my mom tribe was for me. Brandi and the other moms gave me so much advise and emotional support and we touch on the importance of finding your (honest) mom friends early on. Brandi also shares some funny insight on how she breastfed her son for 10 months while traveling to conferences and conventions and my favorite story involves a silk blouse and forgotten back up bra.

Brandi was also the one who taught me about Milk Stork – a milk shipping service for when you are traveling and wanting to ship milk home from your hotel.

I hope you get a good laugh and enjoy our conversation. Most importantly, I hope it inspires you to find your own Mom tribe.

Also, if you have not watched “The Letdown” please do so – this was my ultimate inspiration to joining a moms group and it almost exactly reflected what I found in these women. Weird humor and everything!

  • Today’s episode is one where I get to merge my passion, audio books, with this podcast by suggesting trigger free books to you as new moms or at least warn you of some of the triggers that might exist in the book so you can decide for yourself if you want to read it. Post-Partum Anxiety and Depression is a real thing, and I hope that these books allow you to escape a bit into a story without having to fear the story turns dark and worrisome. Books I review in this episode are the following:

9 perfect strangers by Liane Moriarty (only as an example of a book that DID trigger me)

Where the Crawdats Sing by Delia Owens

The Hypnothists love story by Liane Moriarty

What Alice forgot by Liane Moriarty (only as a suggestion if infertility and miscarriage does not trigger you)

The Whiper Network by Chandler Baker

The last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

A fine Imitation by Amber Brock

A gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

  • Angela is a lawyer who breastfed both of her children and while she exclusively pumped for her first son, she almost exclusively breastfed her second. This meant scheduling pump sessions around meetings and depositions so she could go pump or meet her nanny to breastfeed her son.

In this episode we talk about jaundice, fixing clogged ducks in hot tubs, tracking your production with helpful apps. We even discuss how to still pursue your career while wanting to be an involved hands-on mom. I bring up my favorite book and author “Lean In” from Sheryl Sandberg and the advice she gave me once on how to level out the playing field.

    Favorite Products and Resources:

finger feeding and boob feeding tubes

Clarisonic face brush to help with clogs, but I think anything with that sonic vibration will do (e.g., electric toothbrush).

While we are at it, let’s just add that Hot tub in here

App: https://www.babyconnect.com/ (Angela also used this to track nursing times for her second son)

Turning nursing camisole to hold flanges hack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwqdT_931Tc

  • Lauren is an actress, writer and producer who has written and sold multiple original screenplays throughout her short but impressive professional career. Most recently, she created, wrote, produced, and starred in A California Christmas, one of a small handful of feature films to start and complete production during the pandemic. You can find this movie as well as her movie Roped on Netflix.

What is of importance to us today is that Lauren is a breastfeeding mom, and she talks to us about the challenges women in the movie industry are faced with when wanting to breastfeed when returning on set. Lauren was lucky in her journey as she produced the movie she starred in and it allowed her to add “mommy time”, aka pumping time, into the schedule. Throughout the interview she makes it a point to remind us that this is not common and that the industry is not set up to allow most females in different roles on set to do the same.

This interview showed me even more how there are still many industries that are not set up to support breastfeeding mothers and I am so thankful to Lauren for being on our show, sharing her experience and spreading the awareness.

  • I recently posted about hair loss on the Busy Mom Pumping Instagram account and my friend who is the host of the “Girls with Guts” podcast suggested I talk to Dr. Abby as she is an expert on this topic, and she is a breastfeeding mom herself. Win Win!

Dr. Abby is a dermatologist in Massachusetts as well as an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School and she will be talking to us about Telogen Effluvium – temporary hair loss that happens after some sort of stress… like birthing another human being.

Even if you are not breastfeeding this is a great topic of discussion and just skip straight to minute 15 in this episode. Dr. Abby talks about what causes hair loss and how we can prepare for it. As a dermatologist, she also gives us some advice on skin care and points out that self-care is an important part of it.

BUT I would suggest listening to the episode in its entirety as she talks about how she fit breastfeeding her two children into her work schedule and how she chose her career path to ensure she could still have an active private life.

    Hair Loss - Telogen Effluvium:

    Vitamin D and Iron Supplements

Keep taking your prenatal vitamins especially if they are not in the gummy form

Self-care – destress (if at all possible)

    Avoid Rogaine

    Skincare Advise

    Melasma: Azelaic acid + SunScreen (SPF30) + Vitamin C and E Serum + Retinoid

    Hyperpigmentation: hydroquinone

Circles under your eye: a good night crème. Dr. Abby often just uses Vaseline or aquaphor (I already have this for diaper rashes)
