On today’s episode, we’re going over the very early days of football on the West Coast. I won’t lie, I’m feeling a little pessimistic about the future in this part of the country, at least with respect to the future of football. But if its history is any indication, it’ll work out some kind of way.

Today we’re going over the evolution of the early rules of American football, and how it came to distinguish itself completely from its immediate ancestor, early rugby. The two main things are the line of scrimmage as an innovation on the scrum, and the legalization of blocking, which is something that could not be more illegal in other forms of football around the world.
Basically, all major changes that occurred before the advent of the forward pass.
Enjoy!

Today on Dogs in Autumn, I go through a comparison of American football and soccer, talking about the evolution of tactics and strategies in each, and how the different choices made early on create the incredible difference that we see between the two today. I also talk a little about the difference in the business side of each, and how they're structured and organized. This'll be part one of a series I'll come back to in the future.

In today's episode, I do a flyover of the history of the SEC, covering the exits of early founders Sewanee, Georgia Tech, and Tulane, as well as the end of Jim Crow in college football, and the three rivalries that have come to sit at the center of the league: the Iron Bowl, The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, and The Third Saturday in October.

In today's episode, I'm taking a stroll through the early landscape of football in the Southeast. We'll touch on the lost titan Sewanee--probably most famous today as a quirk in Alabama's fight song--as well as the first meeting between the Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs in 1892. We'll also introduce football in the HBCUs, in anticipation of a more in-depth look at them later.
