  • After an atrocious attempt at an introduction in Irish, Nicola runs Neil through a gauntlet of mundane streaks, challenging him to pick one to stick to (4:35). Will he choose Will Shortz's streak of playing table tennis everyday for 10 years? Or will he eat at least one Big Mac everyday for the rest of his life? What about collecting as many sick bags as possible? The postulations are endless and quite weird!

Then, listeners, press start as Neil postulates on the future of video game adaptations (32:00). Are we living in the renaissance age of video games made into movies and TV series? What is driving it and what can we expect to see next?

All of this and much more on this episode of LIP! Keep postulating, listeners!

  • Postulators, assemble! On this edition we postulate on the addictiveness of online games. Where are we after the thousandth Wordle? How many immaculate grids can there possibly be? And who is more likely to crack on their streaks, Neil or Nicola?

Then, since nothing gets our hosts more excited than staring at a nice map and eating a lovely meal, we decided to combine the two (7:15). Nicola presents his theory of an Eat To Live/Live To Eat meridian that splits Europe equally and they go about testing the hypothesis live on the podcast. Where will your favorite country land? Why does Germany get its own category? Do we underestimate the Balkans? And could the Baltic block pull off a historic upset?

All of this and much more on this episode of LIP! Keep postulating, listeners!

  • After extensive celebrations following the release of LIP L, Neil and Nicola are back with some tremendously mundane postulations!

First, Neil wants hilly running races to get the recognition they deserve from the various obscure organization committees (as well as to have you follow him on Strava) (1:47). Then, is skiing the most arrogant assertion of mankind's dominance over nature (9:50)?

Afterwards, it's good night listeners, as the guys postulate on strategies for bed buying, which turns out to be a much more complicated process than one might expect (20:20). Is the bed salesperson a step above or below the used car salesman? And are VTPs unfairly discriminated against when it comes to bed building?

They round things off by taking you behind the curtain of 'Parent Corner' and ruminating on whether the type of music being played makes any difference at all for the six month old listening to it (37:48).

    Keep postulating, listeners!

  • Nobody believed in them when they embarked on this crazy journey a little over a year ago, but somehow Neil and Nicola have defied the odds to make it to their 50th episode!

After a classic mundane opener about food, restaurants and the arbitrary correlations between price and quality (5:10), it's on to the mailbag (16:50).

An old unnamed friend writes in critiquing Neil's recent performance on Google reviews. Then after a brief Scientology sidebar, The Grey Ham sends in a voice note about bread and sausages. Why is it so difficult to find the right amount of hot dogs for buns in supermarkets nowadays?

As a final treat, the guys are asked to create a Mount Rushmore from the first 50 episodes of LIP (35:00)!

  • In this bonus release from our archive we travel back in time to understand how the Oscars became the campaigning and business-oriented event they are today (1:35). This leads us on a journey to the following enticing postulations: how often does the Academy actually get the winner for Best Picture right? and what would change if we were to award the Oscars with a ten year delay?

We end with our first ever head-to-head quiz showdown where we encourage all listeners to play along. Who will go down as the LIP Oscars Trivia World Champion (32:0)?

As ever, you can connect with us through our instagram account @lostinpostulation and via email [email protected]. Feedback, questions and postulations all very welcome!

Corrections & Amendments: Kathryn Bigelow did, in fact, win Best Director for The Hurt Locker in 2009. Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for Goodfellas in 1991. Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah in 2021 and not for Best Actor, as mentioned.

  • Following much uproar from postulators worldwide and an extended delay, One Star Google Reviews are back with a vengeance! First though, Neil and Nicola make a concerted efforts to listeners in Quebec before postulating about the philosophies surrounding brunch (5:25). Do we all love our eggs-bennies enough to wait in line for hours every Sunday? And is the concept of brunch a function of the time of day or the type of food?

The core segment sees the return of the Google Review Adjudication Panel (16:20). On this edition, the guys try to get to the bottom of why universally adored places are receiving low ratings. Are people being unfair to the Grand Canyon (18:10)? And who is the pants thief lurking around the premises? Then, is the Statue of Liberty a tourist hoax as many are making it out to be or are they mistakenly taking out their government frustration on Lady Liberty (33:28)?

  • On this special episode of LIP, Nicola interviews Twin Cities-based rapper DH Porter.

First though, the guys are back in the studio for some live postulations and an update on the polarizing Mount Chucksmore election (5:10). Who are the four comic actors turned dramatic that will be put up on that wall in Edinburgh? Will Jim Carrey fans get what they came for? Or will Aubrey Plaza and Adam Sandler put on a Ralph Nader-esque performance?

Then, DH Porter (@dh.porter) joins us to discuss what it feels like to be a long-suffering Minnesota sports fan (11:10), his music creation process (28:45) & mental health (42:25). Finally, he tests himself through a postulation gauntlet (48:30) for the ages!

The music sampled throughout the episode is from DH Porter. DH already has 2 albums out in 2024, hbd and Bounces. If you enjoyed the episode, you can find his music anywhere you get your tunes, including Bandcamp and Spotify. For more news on his upcoming releases follow him on Instagram (@dh.porter).

  • After their trip to South Dakota, Neil and Nicola are back with more postulations! In a rare instance of vulnerability, Neil opens up to the audience about a traumatic experience from a board game night (1:05). Then, after a brief aside on the enduring accuracy of Wikipedia (7:30), they reveal their sympathies for a certain side in the Duvet Wars (10:00). Are separate duvets always better? And what should you do when you are staying in a hotel?

The main postulatory segment sees the return of the many Mount Rushmores. First, perplexing poll results are revealed from last week that reveal a surprising (and, perhaps, dissapointing) level of conventionality and conformity from the LIP community (17:12). Then it is on to Mount Chucksmore, where Neil and Nicola attempt to reach a consensus to determine the four greatest comedians that have succesfully transitioned to serious dramatic roles (25:30). Spoiler: they fail and will need your help in another run-off vote!

  • Neil and Nicola come to you from the Black Hills of South Dakota for a round of momentous postulations!

After some puzzling talk about generational divides, Neil evaluates David Sedaris' posutlation abiltiies (9:30). How should you go about eating a car tire? And is consuming a door still a preferable (and marginally healthier) endeavor?

Then, they introduce a new postulatory device: The Mundane Mount Rushmore (17:00). What are the four greatest sauces of all-time (19:25)? Is ketchup the George Washington? Do dips count as sauces? And where will this great monument be located?

Then, they dip into the pop culture realm as Mount Board Game also needs to be adjudicated (38:10). Nicola rolls the dice in search of a unified theory and Neil chimes in with his expert knowledge. Will there be space for a Chinese classic? And who will be crowned the Teddy Roosevelt of board games?

Finally, there is space for Movie Corner (57:25), where Nicola seems to have missed something from Barbie and Philip Seymour Hoffman is honored.

  • Neil and Nicola are joined by a very special guest on this episode: Eric Mittenthal, President of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (3:53)! After spending the better part of a year investigating and talking to sandwich experts, LIP finally gets to hear the other side of the story. Is a hot dog a sandwich? What is the mission of the NHDSC? Would they be willing to sit down for a peace mediation with the BSA? All of this and much, much more on this episode of LIP!

  • Neil & Nicola kick the new year off in the only way they know how: by postulating about what 2024 will bring (7:21)!

Will we expand our diets to include hairy eight-legged critters with a surprisingly high level of protein? Who will win the so-called streaming wars? Will 2024 be a year about treating yourself or will we bow to the corporate machine? All of this and much, much more on this episode of LIP!

  • On this special bumper-episode, Neil and Nicola's postulations take a dark turn. First though, there is talk about Spotify Wrapped's new innovation and what else the concept could be applied to (7:35). And, for some reason, Neil keeps mentioning his Garmin watch.

Then, Neil presents his case for a postulation about cults (20:45). What is a cult? What is the history behind some of the most famous (or infamous) one? And can the guys manage to postulate their way through creating one of their own (44:00)? Why does Olivia Coleman get a shoutout? And will the Gulf welcome us with open arms?

What if I told you there was a club that trumped any notion you might have of cult status? What if I told you there was a club whose own fans rebuilt their stadium? A club whose corner flags have been designed by one of their own? Whose owner is a fan? A club with deep roots in an old geopolitical divide that has now galvanized global audiences?

On this episode author Kit Holden joins us from Berlin as we discuss his book 'Scheisse! We're Going Up!: The Unexpected Rise of Berlin's Rebel Football Club' (2:03). We cover a lot of ground including what makes Union's fanbase unique, what their history as a club from the former East Germany means and what is going on at the club this season (31:20).

  • The season of postulation is upon us! Neil and Nicola don't hold back on this episode as they delve into a mundane philosophical rumination on wishes (6:10). Is 1 wish now better than 3 wishes 5 years from now? What is the actual cost of delayed gratification? And, Marty, who's the president in 1984?

Then, the Sandwich-Hot Dog Wars continue as they reach out to the National Hot Dog (and sausage!) Council for clarity (19:00). Will LIP be the mediator of the upcoming peace negotiations between the warring parties or does nobody actually desire a lasting peace? What does Matt Damon have to say about it? And is Kobayashi the GOAT of the hot dog eating contest?

Nicola rounds things off by placing a call to a notorious petrol station on the outskirts of Cardiff (47:28). Should providing the wrong phone number on your google page result in an automatic 1 star rating?

This week, Nicola was joined by football historian Chris Lee from Outside Write to discuss the intersection of football and politics. Our interview centers around his most recent book Defiant: A History Of Football Against Fascism.

Chris takes us on a journey from Italy under Mussolini (8:10) to debunking myths about the politics behind El Clasico in Spain (25:30). We then hear the remarkable story of how a team that now sits in the third division of the Portuguese pyramid helped to bring down the Salazar dictatorship (38:30). There is also talk about South America (44:47) and an infamous Death Match in Ukraine (47:55).

  • On this episode, the guys welcome a very special guest as part of their ongoing investigation into sandwiches.

First though, Neil provides an update on spending his Thanksgiving in Turkey of all places, including a general vibe check and a sandy take on their coffee (1:00). Along the way, they manage to uncover a potential ongoing conspiracy at Big Orange Juice (5:40). Is there such a thing as orange juice with natural pulp or have we been trolled all along?

Then, for the meat between the two loaves of bread of the episode, Nicola interviews Jim Winship, the CEO of the British Sandwich Association (17:54). Jim and Nicola postulate on the size of the UK sandwich industry, its origins and future before diving into what all the listeners want to know: is a hotdog a sandwich? What about a burger? And will LIP be the podcast of choice for next year's Sandwich awards (SAMMIES)? Tune in to find out!

They round things off by calling a recent winner of the SAMMIES to continue building their network in the industry (50:30).
