  • If you want something to happen, you gotta work for it yourself!

In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking my guest is native Italian, Fab Giovanetti.

Fab is an award-winning author, entrepreneur and marketing consultant helping busy professionals reclaim their time. She’s also the CEO and head teacher at Alt Marketing School, supporting people making a positive impact through their marketing. She aims to help people grow their online audience, monetise their content and unleash their potential as creatives.

Fab is a speaker and podcast host too. I first met her at this year’s You Are The Media Creator Day where she bounced onto stage and delivered her message with such energy and enthusiasm that I wish she’d been my head teacher!

Her school, Alt Marketing School, teaches positive impact marketing to professionals who want to do marketing differently. Her students learn how to market to hearts, not brains with unique, live cohorts featuring flexible curriculums.

She’s on a mission to help 100,000 professionals from all walks of life market to hearts, not brains, to connect with fellow marketers and business owners tired of the 'old way of marketing'. The movers. The shakers.

From Picking Pears to working in Nando's this Italian gal from a small country town, learned the value of patience, acceptance, and attention to detail. More importantly, if you want something to happen, you gotta work for it yourself.

We had a fascinating and lively chat about Speaking, teaching, modern marketing, humility, practice and progress!

This was the last Speaking About Speaking in this format. Stay tuned to find out what happens next!

  • In this previously live solo episode of Speaking About Speaking, I talk about my acting training and experience of being an actor. I explain how I use them to get clients comfortable with their content, confident in themselves and excited to be in front of their audience.

I discuss the importance of a physical warm-up for your body and face, and how to breathe for performance. Why playing games builds trust and positivity and why fully owning your ‘back story’ helps you to speak confidently.

I’ll also touch on Master Voice Teacher and author, Patsy Rodenberg’s concept of 2nd Circle energy and how you can use it to ‘reclaim your presence’. Fascinating stuff!

  • "The accident stripped my confidence."

Alix is a freelance journalist, copywriter and certified cheese addict.

She has a love for academics, having studied both journalism and law and having managed to combine the two – with one of her varied positions a media reporter for a criminal barrister on the island of Bermuda!

Alix started out as a feature writer for lads’ mags in the early 2000s and learned early in her career that she had a knack for writing for very different audiences. From humorous articles one day, to in-depth white papers the next, she loves a writing challenge.

Alix and I have met several times at You Are The Media events; I even gave her a very speedy hug at Creator Day this year as she attempted to break the most hugs in a minute world record (she came very close!)

With her varied career and personal challenges, Alix has an incredible story that she wants (and should) share with the world. To that end, she has enrolled in my Speak Like a Speaker Club and very bravely put herself forward for Matt Denyer’s Failed Nights event next year, where she’ll speak for 15 minutes on her ‘failures’! Despite the title, it’s an uplifting and humorous event full of love and learning. (I spoke this year and had a riotous time!)

This was a lively 30 minutes. Alix’s story despite the life-changing accident that nearly killed her is uplifting, humorous and inspiring.

  • "To be community-led is to have community at the centre of our decisions."

Rosie Sherry is the founder and CEO of the Ministry of Testing, the leading community of practice for software testing professionals. She’s an expert at community building and writes and researches around the subject via Rosie.land.

She advocates for community building, indie-pendence for life choices, neurodivergence and home education.

I saw Rosie on stage recently where she spoke about the importance of community and the role it plays in uniting people and shaping business.

We discussed her obsession with community for connection rather than for ROI and how her community of software testers are asked to speak, sometimes for the first time to fellow members at the annual conference.

Rosie lives in Brighton where she and her husband ‘unschool’ their 5 children and run their business and several successful communities! I’m exhausted just thinking about it! A fabulous conversation.

  • Rebecca Leppard is an Indonesian entrepreneur who transitioned from a high-powered corner office at a 5-star hotel to the fast-paced and dynamic world of tech and consulting in the UK.

I first met Rebecca at a YATM Lunch Club and again when we were asked to speak at a Federation for Small Business event. Most recently Rebecca was on stage for the YATM Creator Day where she spoke about her journey from 5* Indonesian high-flyer to pandemic refugee, having to work her way back up from nothing when the world was in lockdown.

    It’s a fascinating story.

She founded Upgrading Women, a media company and marketing agency helping feminists in business go to market. The agency is a 15-women operation, each with her speciality from LinkedIn to podcasts to newsletters. From the agency's success, Rebecca launched Girl Brand Content Club, an affordable way for coaches and service providers to ‘steal’ her content marketing best practices.

Alongside talking to Rebecca about how she ended up a refugee in lockdown with no Visa and no job, we discuss how speaking and entrepreneurial culture differs between Southeast Asia and the UK and how she’s rebranded and built a successful personal brand from nothing.

  • Positive persuasion takes sincerity, honesty, and respect. You need to communicate effectively and build rapport with your audience, whoever they are. In this Speaking About Speaking episode, I discuss how you can speak confidently and persuasively.

As my friend and fellow speaker, Andrew Thorp says, we are all in the persuasion business.

Whenever we speak, we hope to influence, build trust, and create emotional bonds, whether for business, a relationship or as a parent but how do we do that without crossing over to the dark side of manipulation and arrogance?

I start the episode by sharing my 5 top tips on speaking with confidence...

    1. Believe what you are saying.

    2. Breathe

    3. Be prepared

    4. Vocal variety

    5. Tell a story

And then I talk about the devices and techniques we can use to influence and persuade, in a good way. 😊

Here are links to techniques I mentioned in the video:

  • My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking is coaching offer expert, Sales & Marketing Strategist and B2B Speaker, Janine Coombes.

Janine’s speciality is in positioning services and helping coach- shaped clients create sizzling hot offers. For me though it’s her love of performing (she used to have a covers band!) and comedy which shines through her always colourful, sometimes irreverent and often hysterical posts on social media that makes her so watchable.

With over 15 years of industry experience including working with big brands like Orange, EE and Europcar, Janine has also delivered many engaging talks both on and offline including Atomicon, You Are The Media, Elevate and MarketEd.Live.

We obviously discuss her madcap videos, dressing up as characters and her love of improv but she also shares her best speaking advice, how she found self love through LinkedIn video and how you don't have to be a performer to sell your offers - but it helps!

  • At the end of last year Brand Strategist, Podcast Host, and Founder of Brand Compass, Shelley Röstlund asked me to help her prepare for a talk she’d been asked to give on stage to an audience of 200 peers for You Are the Media Creator Day in Poole, Dorset in April.

She’d been on stage before but found it uncomfortable, so much so she couldn’t even remember the experience. She explained during a conversation we had for this podcast in February how she was terrified of the ‘bobbing’ heads beyond the lights!

Well, she did it! I was there and can report, that in fact - she smashed it!

Even better than that, she remembers the whole experience and she had some amazing feedback (she got mobbed in the ladies after!)

This conversation was our first chance to have a full debrief about the day, the talk and the aftermath.

We discuss the process I took her through. From ‘pulling out’ the stories that were relevant and would resonate with the audience to getting her past ‘uncanny valley’.

Shelley underlines the importance of storytelling for your personal brand. It was also something that she took away from our work together. The quality of conversations she had after the event surprised her. In our conversation she tells me she’s learnt not to edit those stories because you don’t know what will ultimately resonate with the audience.

She says, ‘tell your story, in your voice and in a way that’s comfortable for you’.

I couldn’t has said it better myself.

If you're about to give a talk or presentation and want to speak with confidence.

Or if speaking to your audience is something you want to do more of, but fear is holding you back, then my conversation with Shelley is a must!

  • For this previously live episode of Speaking about Speaking I spoke with Michelle Haslam, a TikTok-preneur known as the TikTok Lady.

The mid 40’s mother of two uses her own experience with the platform to show small business owners how to use it to grow their business (without having to dance!)

Having started her own small business in affiliate marketing in May 2021 alongside a part-time 9-5, she moved to TikTok to promote it. She admits being shockingly bad at first but stuck with it and after researching, learning and honing her videos to suit the platform’s algorithm started making some traction.

She is now making consistent sales and has over 95k followers on one of her accounts.

Her mid-life TikTok ‘influencer’ status means that she is now invited to speak on stages about her experience.

She tells me how with my help she is now comfortable and excited to get in front of an audience (also, how I got her sweeping my kitchen floor with her finger tips!!)

We also discuss how she how she monetises her TikTok feed, copes with the inevitable Trolls and how she managed to be featured in the Irish Sun Newspaper for rubbing banana peel into her face!

  • My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking is Corporate LinkedIn trainer, employee advocacy expert and Keynote Speaker, Sarah Clay.

In the past Sarah has trained as a lawyer, produced TV and music videos, and ran marketing and PR departments.

Sarah loves LinkedIn and now runs her own social media business training people how to use the platform and speaks to audiences on the subject too.

She grew up as the only girl with six loud and confident brothers which meant she had to quickly learn the art of making herself heard. Being raised in a male-dominated environment, she’s a woman with a burning desire to change the world. Which she is doing by regularly stepping on stages and hosting her own podcast from her luscious Live Lounge.

Sarah and I have met several times at You Are the Media and Digital Women events. And we’ve played pool and danced a couple of times too (I like to think if we’d we met at school, we’d have been BFF’s! 😊)

She tells me how she went from lawyer to Producer to Marketer and then Speaker (and soon to be author 🤫)! We also, discuss employee advocacy i.e., getting employees to act as their companies brand ambassador by posting work related content on social media. A win win, as in doing so not only do they boost the company brand but their own personal brand too. Such a fabulous conversation.

  • Don't Worry About Worrying!

It doesn't matter who we are or what situation we are in we all worry! We ALL get anxious.

So should we worry about it? Does it mean there is something wrong with us?

For this previously live episode of the Speaking about Speaking podcast I'll be sharing my thoughts on the subject and the advice I give not just to clients, but to family and friends when they are facing a situation that causes them discomfort.

I talk about getting comfortable outside of your comfort zone, using status exercises so you don't have to 'fake it until you make it' and how to we ALL get nervous when we have to do anything for the first time.

Plus I share other peoples thoughts on how to deal with walking in to a room full of strangers and feeling comfortable with small talk.

What worries you? A social situation? A business network? Talking to work colleagues? Presenting to an audience?

  • Stay humble, stay challenged.

In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Director, Financial Strategist, and former CFO of Gymshark, Philip Daw.

Chartered accountant, Phil spent 28 years as senior partner in general practice, before in 2019, he was tempted by fast-growing gym wear brand, Gymshark to join them as chief financial officer (CFO).

A brave move considering founder, Ben Francis, was only 27 and the average age of Gymshark employees was 28, but Phil embraced the challenge.

During his time with them they became what’s known as a ‘Unicorn’ business, that is they achieved a billion-dollar valuation!

Now, as Director and financial lead at We Are Whanau, alongside former Gymshark president, Steve Hewitt, Phil helps other companies find their ‘North Star’ and progress to Unicorn status.

Of course, this is fascinating stuff but - I hear you ask - what has this got to do with Speaking About Speaking?

    Let me explain...

I knew very little about Gymshark, the business or its ethos before Phil asked me in September 2021 to go to Gymshark HQ in Solihull and work with him and the team to help improve their public speaking skills. They were presenting to an important and formidable audience and Phil in particular needed a confidence boost.

As I always do, before heading off I did a little research and found that founder, Ben Francis, being an introvert, realised his lack of speaking confidence was making his audience feel uncomfortable, so decided it was his duty to learn the art of public.

I also found that the company motto is ‘Stay Humble.’ Which I love!

For me, humility is an underestimated but crucial quality that creates curious and compassionate speakers.

I was honoured and excited to have Philip join me for this conversation.

We discussed all of the above.

    Plus, the power of ...

Building a culture that empowers people.Influencer marketing.A simple business model. The sliding doors moment.

  • What is homophily and does it make the boat go faster?

In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I speak with Trainer, Coach and Speaker, Adam Armstrong, a former Head Boy of and teacher at the famous Italia Conti Performing Arts School.

His acting credits include The Bill, Grange Hill, and The Minder. And his students have included Russell Brand, Danny Mays, Martine McCutcheon, and Claire goose.

I met Adam a year ago when, alongside fellow acting coach, Peter Ferris, we designed an acting course for stunt trainees which we now run for the British Stunt Register.

Adam also founded his own training company, Herald, in 2009, which offers bespoke presentation training and coaching around personal effectiveness, communication skills, creative thinking and change management.

Also, he’s studied Psychology and NLP, and he's ex-champion runner, completing a mile in very close to 4 minutes!

Before I met Adam, I’d never heard the word homophily or the expression ‘Does it make the boat go faster?’ Now I use both regularly!

  • In this previously live solo Speaking About Speaking episode, I talk you through T.R.I.P.P., my acronym for increased confidence, creativity... and fun in your life.

You may know me as a speaker and acting coach. It’s my business, it’s how I help people speak to their audience and I love it...

But my reason for being is to use my training as an actor and artist to build connection, confidence, and resilience, through improvisation, play, and positivity.

Follow TRIPP to help develop your creativity and your joy.

So, what does T.R.I.P.P. stand for?

T - Truth but can also represent TRUST. 'Confidence is a trust in oneself.' Cicero

R - Resilience. The joy within. Finding and owning your story.

I - Improvising but can also represent INNOVATION (creativity) "You Can't Use Up Creativity, the More You Use the More You Have" Maya Angelou

P - Play. The difference between child-ish and child-like. 'Playful people are creative people.' Tom Morris

P - Positivity. Passion and enthusiasm for life and work.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas on the subject so leave a comment below.

  • "Podcasting changed my life!" so says podcast Junkie, Harry Duran.

In this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking my guest, Podcast Strategist, Keynote Speaker, Author and Podcast Junkie, Harry and I discuss the merits of an actors training and how it can help you show and share your vulnerable side.

Harry spent 20 years working in the Marketing departments of JPMorganChase and E-Trade before switching to the world of podcasting.

He’s hosted his own show since 2014 and has published over 300+ interviews across his 3 shows.

Originally, with an interest in electronic music, he intended to podcast interview DJs but soon pivoted when he realised that tracking down and interviewing superstar DJs wasn’t so easy! And so, Podcast Junkies was born, an interview-based show focused on, he says, the true superstars of podcasting, the hosts themselves.

He’s since founded FullCast, a full-service, done-for-you podcast agency and has made it his personal mission to help one thousand business owners launch their podcast and become the leading authority in their market.

And if that wasn’t enough, he founded and hosts the Vertical Farming Podcast. He explains what that is and why finding a niche, especially if it's on a topic that 'lights you up' can lead to success for you and your audience.

This is a fascinating conversation about speaking, podcasting, acting, and farming!

  • "The real biggest growth I got was when I started posting my vlogs [...] My content means something to them."

My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking is Content Creator, Business Leader & Speaker, Matt King.

I first met Matt on a Zoom screen in 2020 during the first lockdown. At that time, he was running his sales coaching business, Sales Change and hosting a podcast of the same name.

  • Even though you know speaking in public is going to feel uncomfortable you have to grab those speaking opportunities to grow your business!

My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking is one half of husband-and-wife duo, Yellow Tuxedo. The wife half that is, lovely Emily Braithwaite.

Emily and husband, Alan have run a business together for over 10 years, firstly in the wedding and events arena and now in the Digital Marketing world.

With their company, Yellow Tuxedo, they show small business owners how to increase their online presence. They also, launched a podcast last year called Digital Circus LIFE | The Small Business Podcast.

Although Emily is an adventurous soul, receiving a medal from Queen Camilla for her services to scouting and recently heading a group of women on a trip to Malawi, she is just as happy at home with Alan, their 3 kids and the chickens.

Although used to speaking to a virtual audience producing videos and webinars for Yellow Tuxedo’s YouTube channel and its Digital Circus membership, Emily is now expected to speak on larger stages to live audiences which she admits to finding it uncomfortable.

We discuss how she deals with the nerves and whether being part of a dynamic duo helps (or hinders! 😊) her. We also discuss personal brand, personality led content and the importance of speaking for your digital visibility.

Plus, who is Mrs B and what part will she play in Emily’s future?

  • Brand Strategist, Podcast Host, and Founder of Brand Compass, Shelley Röstlund has been invited to speak to an auditorium of peers in April for the You Are the Media Creator Day in Poole, Dorset and she's asked me to help her speak with confidence and get performance ready!

This includes helping her shape an engaging, entertaining, and insightful 20-minute talk.

Shelley has been on stage before but found the experience uncomfortable.

We discuss why she thought it necessary to work with a coach, how she's feeling with the event on the horizon and about the process I’m taking her through.

She also tells me about her fear of the ‘bobbing’ heads beyond the lights, the fear of not being funny and her past 'blank trauma'.

I offer her some solutions and listen as she shares the story behind her talk and the video that prompted event organiser, Mark Masters to ask her to speak.

If you're about to give a talk or presentation and want to speak with confidence.

Or if speaking to your audience is something you want to do more of, but fear is holding you back, then my conversation with Shelley will answer some of your questions.

  • Get out of your comfort zone and learn to speak with confidence. It's important for your business says Relentlessly helpful® LinkedIn® nerd, trainer & consultant, John Espirian.

John was my guest for this this previously LIVE episode of Speaking about Speaking LIVE.

John helps small businesses & solopreneurs build an effective presence on LinkedIn® and the web without using pointless ads, cringey outreach or craptacular sales.

Relentlessly helpful® is his trademarked phrase, and I having known John for a while I know it’s not just a trademark but his life’s purpose!

He's not only a LinkedIn nerd (his word not mine) but a speaker and now a conference organiser, too. Did you know that LinkedIn doesn’t run its own conference? I think they’re missing a trick, but luckily for us John has stepped up and with the help of Jeremy Freeman and Gus Bhandal has organised the LinkedIn focused Uplift Live event in Birmingham next month.

So, I took the opportunity to ask John not just about speaking, video and showing up on LinkedIn but also how he went about choosing and booking speakers and what he thought it took to be a good speaker. He also gives some great advice on how to get picked to speak at an event.

There are some fabulous questions from the audience and some wise and insightful take aways from John. I particularly liked his advice to make the biggest promise you can keep and use the smallest set of words to describe yourself.

This episode is bursting with nuggets of speaking, personal brand and LinkedIn gold!

  • As you may know...

I help individuals create talks that are entertaining, engaging, and educational and give them tools to help them excited about speaking to their audience.

I, also, help corporate teams make their presentations impactful.

    I've been hosting a podcast since 2020.

I'm a speaker who speaks about speaking, confidence, resilience and finding the joy within you.

What you may not know is...

    I was a Fashion designer.

    I trained as an actor.

I worked backstage at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and others.

    I've dressed Judi Dench.

I survived and thrived after a breast cancer diagnosis at age 28.

I began an English Literature and Creative writing degree at age.

    My father is a stuntman.

I teach stunt trainees how to act.

I have one beautiful and gifted daughter who's a singer songwriter.

I've had a varied career and an 'interesting' life, full of ups, downs and complete turn arounds so, I thought what I've learnt on my 50+ years on the planet my help others on their own adventure.

In this previously LIVE episode of Speaking About Speaking I invited questions from the audience.

Here's a couple of the questions I was asked...

What can you do to calm nerves in the 5 minutes before you step in front of an audience?

What's the difference between a speaker and presenter?

What's your best performing experience and why?

    Crisps or Chips?

This was such a fun 30 mins (for me at least :)) Have a listen and if you're inspired to ask a question write it in the comments and I'll get back to you.
