  • Former pro-cyclist Jimmy Whelan reveals where he intends to run his debut marathon later this year – you’ll have to listen to find out!

Dialling in from his home in Barcelona, Jimmy talks about his transition from pro cycling to a brief stint as a triathlete and his newfound status as a professional runner sponsored by Salomon. He’s never been happier as an athlete! And we tap into what that’s all about.

We talk about his breakout 61:37 half marathon in Valencia, the disappointment of Berlin half, the chatter centred on his scorching potential, and why he’s not afraid to say big goals out loud, including his ambition to be in the marathon conversation for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Jimmy also gives us a unique window into pro cycling on the European circuit. Aside from the joys of long group rides, living in Europe and café stops, the other headlines are: stress, contract pressure and terrifying crashes, which all ultimately pushed him away from the sport and back towards his first love of running.

It’s a full-circle moment for Jimmy, and what a pleasure it was to talk through his evolution and reinvention as an athlete on the pod! Enjoy!

    --

James “Jimmy” Whelan is an Australian athlete whose career has spanned professional cycling, triathlon and now distance running. Jimmy made a real statement last year when he ran a 61-minute half marathon in Valencia, attracting the attention of the athletics community and major sponsors alike. Now signed with Salomon, and coached by Andy Henderson, Jimmy has his sights set on the marathon distance, hoping to make his debut later this year. Jimmy’s professional cycling career included affiliations with renowned teams such as Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, Anicolor/Tien21 Cycling Team and EF Pro Cycling. Jimmy is currently based in Barcelona, Spain.

  • Elise and Alice get together to debrief all things Copenhagen Marathon, including the perfect conditions, incredible vibes, some fuelling trials and tribulations, and a surprise encounter with Jakob Ingebrigtsen (his little brother Kristoffer ran 2:29 by the way)! Elise gives a play-by-play breakdown of the race and how she felt finishing her 11th marathon in a city that means so much to her (with 2:53 on the clock).

Meanwhile, AB is set to line up for her debut half marathon in Brooklyn this weekend, but is probably most looking forward to the swim post-race.

Though this episode starts with a discussion on hair washing and canned foods, we promise it goes up a notch after a couple of minutes! Enjoy!

  • Elise and Alice are finally back for a chaotic cross-continental catch-up, with Elise in Copenhagen preparing for the marathon this weekend, and Alice living her best semi-Carrie-Bradshaw life in New York.

There’s plenty discuss in their usual unhinged way, from Alice’s Boston Marathon game show debut to Elise’s commentary at the Bendigo 5k Frenzy, and Copenhagen Marathon build (including the changes she and coach Kate made compared with Ballarat last year, and some Etsy magic behind the scenes). Alice also gives the full story behind her win at the Canyons 25k trail race in California (which she did without trail shoes in a unitard through poison oak).

Also, buckle up for some side quests featuring characters like Dorothy the Dinosaur and the unsung heroes on vomit clean up duty! Enjoy.

  • Physio, runner and friend of the pod Sam Slykhuis joins Elise for a whistle-stop tour of one of the most dreaded words in distance running: stressie!

Using Elise’s own grade one tibial stress reaction from last year as a case study, Sam breaks down what bone stress actually is, why it happens, the warning signs runners should never ignore, and how to approach rehab without losing your mind.

There is plenty of practical gold in this one, including tips on lifting heavy, how plyometrics can support bone health, and why uphill running is not always the safe rehab option people think it is.

Plus: Aqua jogging survival tips, treadmill myths, why runners need deload weeks, the problem with chasing numbers on Strava, and the very real danger of skipping long run progressions and then jumping straight back in.

    A must-listen for any runner.

Sam Slykhuis is a practicing physiotherapist, runner, surfer and co-owner of Marna Physio in Armstrong Creek and Belmont Physiotherapy Centre in Geelong. With a special interest in running-related injuries, Sam works closely with athletes to help them manage niggles, recover from injury and return to full training. • Sage Canaday joins Elise for a wide-ranging chat on trail running, YouTube, speaking out on social media, and starting again after major setbacks, including a surviving life-threatening blood clots in both lungs.

If you have been running for a while, chances are you are already acquainted with Sage. In addition to his running accolades, Sage is one of the OG running YouTubers with a very successful channel called Vo2 Max Productions. We reflect on some of his earliest vids (hello Nipple Tips!) and how the scene has changed today.

We hear about Sage’s running career, spanning Cornell University, and his first pro contract as part of the Hansons-Brooks team (which also included a musical side quest), and his long-term partnership with Hoka from 2014 onwards on the roads and the trails. He has a marathon PB of 2:16:52, is a two-time US Olympic Trials qualifier, and placed in the top-20 at Boston and Chicago. On the trails, he is a three-time US National Champion (12km Mountain Running, 100km Trail Running and Trail Marathon events), as well as the 2014 World Long Distance Mountain Running Champion, among many other achievements.

In 2021, Sage suffered inconceivable adversity – he was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolism, and soon after, he and his partner Sandi Nypaver lost all their belongings in a devastating house fire in Boulder, Colorado. It has been a long road back for Sage since. But he recently finished seventh at Black Canyon 100K in a performance that he says felt like a return to form. Sage shares what still drives him, now aged 40, and where he hopes running will take him next.

Plus: Doping in trail running, the running boom, influencer culture, coaching in the AI era and a life built around adventure.

Sage will line up at Ultra-Trail Australia in a couple of weeks’ time, so make sure to give him a cheer if you’re out there!

  • Julia Paternain joins Elise to talk about the kind of year that changes everything. In 2025, Julia went from marathon debutant to World Championships bronze medallist, thanks to a stunning run in Tokyo where she surprised even herself. In doing so, Julia also became the first Uruguayan athlete to win a medal at a World Champs EVER!

In this episode, Julia takes us inside that extraordinary rise, from her debut 2:27 marathon to the chaos, disbelief and pure emotion of crossing the line for bronze in Tokyo. We hear how she handled the brutal conditions, why she focused so hard on running her own race, and what was actually going through her mind in those now-ICONIC finish line moments.

We get to know Julia’s love of naps, fizzy drink and flat roads. There’s also plenty on her fascinating international story – born in Mexico, raised in England, with Uruguayan roots and now representing Uruguay on the world stage. Julia shares why making the switch felt right, what that bronze medal meant for her family and country, and why returning to England for the London Marathon later this month feels especially full-circle.

    --

Julia Paternain is a distance runner who represents Uruguay and is sponsored by Saucony. She won a bronze medal in her second marathon ever at the World Championships Marathon in Tokyo in 2025. She holds the national record in the marathon for Uruguay (2:27:09), which she ran on debut. Julia grew up in the UK and moved to the United States in 2018 to study and run for Penn State University before transferring to University of Arkansas. She is now based in Flagstaff, Arizona with professional running group, McKirdy Trained. Julia is set to run London Marathon at the end of this month.

  • Izzi Batt-Doyle is back for a chat! And she’s been really busy since she and Elise last spoke. Between running two Australian records on the roads, competing at the Olympics, running a few marathons (all within 40 seconds of each other), getting engaged, buying a house and becoming a dog mum – Izzi certainly hasn’t been twiddling her thumbs!

We cover all those things, and go in depth on her Nagoya Marathon and Valencia Marathons, including the Australian Record pressures, Izzi’s reflections on a big year of training and racing, and the overtraining hole she was in at the end of 2025.

We then turn our attention to Boston Marathon, where Izzi will line up on 20 April, and the appeal of not racing for a fast time, but running free instead. We hear how training is going, including ramping up strength and nailing her carb intake.

Always a pleasure to catch up with IBD!

  • It’s been a season of contrasts for Australian middle distance runner Jack Anstey – from a World Cross gold medal, to the disappointment of missing a major championship team.

Dialling in from Flagstaff, Jack shares his unforgettable experience at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, including the pressure of a late call-up, and what it was like racing with Olli Hoare, Linden Hall and Jess Hull in that winning 4 x 2k relay team.

Jack also speaks candidly about missing selection for the World Indoor Championships, despite meeting the World Athletics qualifying standards and being within the quota. He articulates the impact of Australia’s selection policies on athletes, and why he chose to speak out publicly.

We also chat about growing up in Alice Springs, Jack’s late start (and rapid rise!) in the sport, and his set up in Flagstaff training with Under Armour’s pro team, Dark Sky Distance.

Plus: World Cross medal show-and-tell, overpriced coffees, bike training, book recommendations, and what’s next for Jack.

    --

Jack Anstey is an Australian middle-distance runner based in Flagstaff, Arizona where he runs with the Under Armour pro team, Dark Sky Distance. He recently won a World Athletics Cross Championships gold medal in the 4 x 2k relay in Tallahassee, Florida, as part of a star-studded team comprising Olli Hoare, Linden Hall and Jess Hull. Jack holds the 1000m short track national record (2:16.95) which he ran in Boston 2024. He also represented Australia at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade and again in the road mile in Riga in 2023 where he came 10th (3:58.30). Jack went to college at Illinois State University, and is now completing a teaching degree in Australia.

  • Bendere Oboya joins Elise to talk about her transition from Olympic 400m runner to 800m athlete, and why she is now building something even bigger than her own career.

Bendere reflects on representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, the rapid rise of her early career, and the courage it took to step away from the 400m and back herself in a new event. She tells us about changing coaches, briefly retiring from the sport, and finding new purpose in athletics.

We also dive into Bendere’s upbringing after moving to Australia from Ethiopia as a young child, the sacrifices her family made, and how those experiences have shaped her drive to create more opportunities for others.

At the heart of this episode is the Oboya Foundation, Bendere’s new initiative aimed at removing financial barriers to sport and creating safe, inclusive spaces for young people to belong, move and dream bigger. She shares why representation matters so deeply, how the foundation is already taking shape, and why this work has given her own running a whole new meaning.

Plus: Returning to the 400m for the domestic season, life in Melbourne, fashion off the track, embracing her voice, and running with joy in 2026.

    --

Bendere Oboya is an Australian 400m and 800m runner. She has represented Australia in the 400m at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, and holds a national record in the 600m. • Phil Sesemann joins Elise to break down a big couple of years of marathoning – two 2:07 performances (Amsterdam and Valencia), Olympic reflections, and the steady, linear progression that’s taken him from 2:12 to the fifth fastest Brit of all time.

For Phil and his coach Andrew Henderson, marathon progress is built block by block (never biting off too much), with incremental gains shaping Phil’s professional career. He talks about “hedging his bets” by racing marathons close together to maximise the chance of perfect weather, and the factors that separated a smooth Amsterdam from a tougher Valencia.

We get into 140-mile weeks (that’s 225km!), “easy runs with purpose”, and his go-to fuelling ritual for healthy bones – a pint of chocolate Nesquik after every run. Phil shares how training with athletes like Emile Cairess has improved his own self-belief and lifted his ceiling.

Plus: life as a new dad (fewer training camps and more disrupted sleep), the legendary Mileage Mutts (his dogs Eliud Kipchoge and Haile Gebrselassie), moving away from a career in medicine, his commitment to an Olympic tattoo, and what a “best ever performance” at the forthcoming London Marathon really means.

    --

Phil Sesemann is a professional runner sponsored by ASICS and based in Leeds, UK. He ran 2:07:11 at Valencia in 2025, which is the 5th fastest time ever by a British athlete. He represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

  • Do you know how to twizzle?! Neither do we! Alice and Elise settle in for another chat, with AB sporting a numb lip, and Elise coming off a filthy cold and a truly rude crook neck. Neither have been doing anything dangerous on the snow or ice, but there’s a heap of Winter Olympics chat – the injuries, the drama, the sizzle, the Aussie pride. It’s a very surface-level summary focusing on memes, ill-placed declarations of love, violent crashes and why on earth someone created a sport that involves skis AND guns.

AB and EB compare the injuries on the slopes to the injuries we face on the roads/trails/track. There is a lot of chat about the advent of bone stress injuries and the online commentary surrounding them. Rest, sleep, nutrition and load management are all your best friends here, and the social media comparison trap is NOT IT. There’s also hype building as we come into marathon season, with loads of Australians lining up at Osaka, Tokyo, Boston and London! Truly love this time of year!

Make sure you come along to our free International Women’s Day event with Love the Run next Sunday 1 March at Collingwood Athletics Track from 3:30pm. There’ll be a run, some pilates and a panel discussion with Australian race walker and Olympic medallist Jemima Montag, four-time World Championships marathoner, Sarah Klein, and the one and only Alice Baquie, with Elise Beacom on the mic. • Alice and Elise are back for a very 2026 catch-up, starting with Elise’s birthday done properly: Torquay Run Club, some casual golfing, and a beer mile relay (with Marty’s sculling skills doing the heavy lifting). There’s also zucchini cake (thank you, Jess Stenson) and a rogue veggie-patch “zucchini vandal.”

Alice talks about getting the “running ick” post-Valencia, what it feels like when motivation drops off, and why a blood test can be a game-changer. She takes us inside training camp life at Falls Creek and how it helped her re-find her mojo.

Elise is building back into a marathon block (which one?!). Alice reveals her 2026 goals (water… and being early), and they announce an upcoming International Women’s Day event on Sunday 1 March at Collingwood Athletics Track - run + pilates + panel (guest speakers to be revealed). Save the date! Peace, love, and light.

  • Morgan McDonald (aka “Chicken Boy”) joins Elise to talk through a change in coaching, his return to racing at the World Cross Country Championships, and how he’s approaching training and competition in 2026.

Morgan unpacks representing Australia in Tallahassee, the chaos of a feature-filled cross-country course (yes, including the alligator logs!), and what it meant to wear the green and gold again. He also opens up about the tough decision to step away from the On Athletics Club to take a more individualised approach to his training. Now reunited with college coach Mick Byrne, he shares why trust, patience and a more collaborative training model are central to this new phase, guided by the mantra “start early, progress slow.”

We also dive into NCAA glory days in Wisconsin, injury setbacks, why he’s gone a little anti-Strava in 2026, as well as and some big goals ahead, including the Commonwealth Games and the road to the LA Olympics in 2028.

Plus: coffee orders, book club scheduling sagas, adventures with partner Sinta, double threshold chat, and an elite lunch recommendation. A fun-filled chat to kick off the year!

  • Alice and Elise are back on Sole Sisters with a very important update: Alice Baquie is now a sub-3 marathoner! AB ran 2:58:33 at Valencia Marathon last Sunday, and it was tough going but she gritted it out all the way to the blue carpet.

A potted history of race week includes hours spent perusing Aldi (apologies for harping on about this throughout the pod), stolen race shoes and elite-level commitment to carbohydrates both before and during AB’s stellar run. • Newly crowned Australian marathon record holder Jess Stenson joins Elise to unpack her stunning 2:21:24 run for fifth place in Valencia. Jess takes us through her lead-up and race week in Spain, the mental tools she relied on out on the course, and all the feels from that iconic blue-carpet finish. It’s also a story about self-belief – and the people who helped her find it, including husband Dylan and coach Adam Didyk.--Jessica Stenson has represented Australia in the marathon at three Olympic Games and is a multiple Commonwealth Games medallist, including gold in Birmingham in 2022. • Alice checks in from Valencia in the final stages of her prep for the marathon this weekend. She’s full of steam (colourless carbs) and mixing with some of Australia’s best marathoners over there. Meanwhile, Elise continues to move through the world in a state of brain fog. The pair are upbeat and full of optimism for Alice’s sub-3 marathon attempt, and predict the stage is set for some big elite performances too, despite some warmer than ideal conditions! --Subscribe to Run With It wherever you get your podcasts, so you don’t miss a thing!--Follow us on Instagram:@runwithit.pod@alicebaquie@elisebeacom--Intro/outro music by Dan BeacomGraphic design by Kate Scheer

  • Caitlin Adams is living a full Hannah Montana double life – high school teacher by day, emerging marathon star by… also day. In this episode, Caitlin joins Elise to unpack a year she almost fell out of love with the sport, how she found her groove again on the roads, and her latest achievement: winning her debut marathon at Melbourne.

She takes us inside the juggle of teaching and why she had to completely rework her training week to protect her energy, mental health and her love for running. From three progressively faster half marathons (Melbourne, Launceston, Gold Coast) to a marathon block built around long-run pick-ups and 3:30/km “cruise” reps, Caitlin explains how she and long-time coach Adam Didyk (plus fiancé and coach-in-waiting Lachy) set up a first crack at 42.2 km.

Caitlin also lifts the curtain on race day in Melbourne: the nerves that had her vomiting the night before, being chaperoned by a killer pacing crew, the moment at 30 km when she finally let herself believe she could win, and what it actually feels like to run into the MCG knowing the tape, the flames and the roar are all for you.

    --

Caitlin Adams is a two-time Australian representative at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, and came 12th in the 5k at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga in 2023. She placed second in the Australian Half Marathon Championships on the Gold Coast earlier this year (1:10:26), and just won her debut marathon in Melbourne (2:30:26).

  • Sinead Diver speaks about her Olympic heartbreak in Paris 2024 after she was forced to pull out of the marathon 1.2km into the race. In this candid conversation with Elise Beacom, Sinead shares her experience of the stressful Australian marathon team selection ahead of the Games and how that turmoil impacted her.

Sinead takes us through the days before the Olympic marathon, when she was managing plantar fasciitis, all the way up to marathon day itself, and the moment she knew something else was majorly wrong. We talk about the subsequent negative commentary and unfair assumptions made in the media and online, and Sinead’s long process of healing ever since.

We also discuss Sinead’s current comeback after many injury setbacks over the past year, and cover some incredible highs of her career, including her Australian record-breaking performance at Valencia Marathon in 2022 and her 10th place in the Tokyo Olympic Marathon.
