Symphonic Trumpet Student, KPFA Radio Engineer, and Grateful Dead Bass Player, Phil Lesh has died at age 84. Among the Bass Guitar innovators of the 1960's, Phil provided a Brass Section approach to playing Bass. He changed the way Bass fits into a band and launched an avalanche of low end boom and melody that beautifully connected to the guitar playing of Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia. Chris and Jim share their reflections on Phil's life and music and tell the story behind his signature tune, Box of Rain. Join us for Episode 49 of Six String Hayride Podcast and remember one of the great Bass Players in music. Phil Lesh was a huge supporter of Organ Donation. If this is something that lines up with your beliefs, please consider it and tell your family what your wishes are, you could save a life. Thanks, Peace, and Music, Chris and Jim

Six String Hayride Podcast Episode 48. Women of the West, Patsy, Rose, and Wanda. Patsy Montana (October 30, 1908 – May 3, 1996), Rose Maddox,(August 15, 1925 – April 15, 1998), Wanda Jackson (born October 20, 1937) three pioneering singers, songwriters, fiddle, and guitar players who broke down barriers for women musicians while creating some truly great music. Patsy is the first female country artist to sell one million copies of a record, I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart (1935). Rose pioneers a human firecracker style for a singer fronting a band before Mick Jagger or Tina Turner and creates the Western Style of stage outfits that would inspire Buck Owens and Gram Parsons. Wanda Jackson writes some hit songs and becomes the first female star of Rockabilly and Rock and Roll while making fine country records and graduating High School all at the same time. Impressive women musicians and entertainers who would influence the likes of Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, and Joan Jett. Jim and Chris offer up a hot Buffalo Chicken Pasta Recipe and the usual Hayride Shenanigans. Join us for Episode 48, wherever you get podcasts, we are there.

Six String Hayride Podcast Episode 47. The Other Ones: Helen, Anita, Carlene Carter, and Rosanne Cash. The Hayride has spent a lot of time on Johnny, June, and Mother Maybelle. Time for the Other Sisters and Daughters to get an episode. June Carter is middle Sister to Helen and Anita, two powerhouse musicians and singers who often get overlooked in the Carter / Cash Legacy. Helen was considered the best all around musician in the group and often handled all the vocal and harmony arrangements for her mom and sisters. Anita was often considered to be the best pure singer of the three sisters and had hit duets with Hank Snow and Waylon Jennings. Carlene Carter, June's daughter, had a great run through the 80's and 90's with her own records and a fine duet with Dave Edmunds. Rosanne Cash has had a four decades long career that puts her among the finest songwriters and singers of her generation. The extended Carter / Cash family just might be the finest gene pool in music over the last hundred years. All the usual Hayride Fun and The Rosanne Cash Potato Salad Recipe just in time for football season. All this and more on The Six String Hayride Podcast.

Six String Hayride Podcast Episode 45. The 1990's Episode. In the 1990s, The divide between commercial country music (Garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Alan Jackson) and more artistic music (Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, John Prine and Johnny Cash) gets bigger and bigger. Money and chart position seems to guide the music business more than art and soul. George and Alan, two mainstream millionaires who work for one of the biggest record companies around, don't see the irony when they complain about the death of tradition in classic country. "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", as a film and a record, reminds us of the deep history and soul in classic country, folk, and gospel. We take a look at some of the hit records, bad records, and fun records from the 1990s. Johnny Cash begins a renaissance with his American Recordings Series. Trisha Yearwood has a fun cooking show that makes a great grilled cheese sandwich. We pay our respects to Gene Autry, Jerry Garcia, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Patsy Montana, Minnie Pearl, and Roger Miller. The June Carter cookbook gives us a delicious dessert, Chris makes another cocktail from the John Wayne drinking guide, and all the usual fun on Six String Hayride Classic Country Podcast.
