She emphasizes the importance of flexibility in hiring and scheduling to attract and retain women in ski patrol, noting that at Brundage, 42% of patrollers are women, compared to the national average of 23%.
We discuss the qualifications needed for ski patrol, such as Outdoor Emergency Care certification or EMT training, and the physical skills required to operate rescue toboggans. Janna offers valuable safety tips for skiers and snowboarders, including the importance of pre-season fitness, knowing emergency contact numbers, and following the skier's responsibility code.

In this episode the Ski Moms host Shannon Smith, Founder of Range Fitness. Range Fitness has a variety of offerings from one-on-one coaching to a group training subscription program focused on ski season prep. We were excited to learn about Shannon’s Range Snowfit program, a 4-week ski-specific program that’s perfect for busy ski moms.We learn about Shannon’s background and love of skiing, which started at age 3 in Whistler, BC. Shannon walks us through her educational background that includes a Bachelor's in Kinesiology and certifications in Exercise Physiology and Strength & Conditioning.

Heather is from Roswell, Georgia, not a typical ski hub, but her family has made skiing a tradition. They started taking ski trips to Utah when Heather was first married, and now bring their 4 kids (ages 5-10) on ski trips every year.
Heather shares some great tips for outfitting the family on a budget, using Costco and consignment gear. To make meals easy and affordable, the family stays in condos and uses grocery delivery services. Heather's in-laws often join the trips, creating awesome multi-generational memories on the slopes. Heather encourages families to dive into ski trips, highlighting the benefits that go well beyond just skiing.
After a day on the slopes, the family enjoys cozy time together playing card games and board games like Uno, and Pass the Pig. Heather and her husband unwind with a glass of wine while the kids play.
We loved Heather's positive attitude and adaptability are key to successful family ski trips. Getting the whole family, including grandparents, invested in the ski tradition has created lasting memories. And family meals and games in the condo make for quality family time off the slopes.

In this episode the Ski Moms host Lenore Moritz, founder of momentum, a coaching and mindfulness company. Lenore works both 1:1 and with groups addressing a wide range of needs in both the professional and personal realms.We always start with our guest’s ski origin story and Lenore's started skiing as a teen was a challenging first time on snow. Now as an adult, Lenore embraces skiing on her own terms, not focusing on constant improvement or keeping up with anyone else.
We learn about Lenore’s career path and her career pivot from corporate communications to full-time coaching and mindfulness work. Lenore explains that coaching is about asking questions, challenging assumptions, and empowering clients to find their own solutions.
In her practice Lenore uses a variety of techniques that she thinks can also apply on the slopes, for example she explained how mindfulness techniques like focused breathing can help skiers manage fear and anxiety on the mountain. Additionally, visualization and breaking down challenges into smaller steps can also boost confidence on the slopes.
Perfect ski day for Lenore involves sunny weather, crowd-free slopes, and enjoying at her own pace.

In this episode Nicole and Sarah talk with Tess Miner-Farra, the head of the Winter Sports School in Park City, Utah. This is a unique public charter school that serves 9th-12th grade students focused on winter sports.We loved learning about the Winter Sports School and what makes it such an amazing place for young student-athletes. The school has a non-traditional academic calendar, running from April to November, allowing students to focus on their athletic training and competition during the winter months. For a little history, the Winter Sports School was founded in 1994 as a partnership between the Park City ski team and local educators. In 2014, it transitioned to become a public charter school.
The school's unique model allows students to train and compete at a high level while maintaining a rigorous college prep curriculum. Teachers and staff are very supportive of the student-athletes. The school serves around 150 students, with 30-40% being alpine ski racers, 30% freestyle/freeski, and the rest a variety of other winter and non-winter sports.Academics follow a traditional high school model, with students earning about 7 credits per year. As a public charter, the school must meet state graduation requirements. The application process is a lottery system for Utah residents, with a more selective process for out-of-state applicants.

In this episode Nicole talks with Alli Widman, CEO of Avant Ski. Alli recaps her eventful ski season, including trips to Alta, Heavenly, Grand Targhee, and resorts in Austria and Germany.Alli knows ski passes better than anyone, so we talked updates on major ski passes. Epic Pass did not have major updates, but did add the location of Crans, Montana (Switzerland) to their offering. Both Epic and Ikon Passes continued to increase prices for the upcoming season. The Indy Pass continues to be very popular, but sells out fast. And Alli recommends the Mountain Collective pass for occasional ski trips to big resorts.

In this episode, the Ski Moms are joined by Kelly Pawlak, CEO of the National Ski Area Association (NSAA). Kelly walks us through lots of interesting ski industry trends and data. The NSAA gathers data and insights from U.S. ski areas on visits, demographics, and spending. Last season there were 60.5 million skier visits, the 5th best on record, though down 7.5% from the previous year. The Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest performed strongest while the Midwest had a tough season.The survey highlights an aging skier population and as a result, resorts are focusing efforts on attracting more youth and families. As we often discuss, cost and accessibility can be barriers to getting a family on snow. It was great to learn that ski resorts are spending at record levels, mostly focused on lifts, housing, and infrastructure like snowmaking.
From an industry standpoint, Kelly told us that resorts collaborate well, sharing best practices especially around safety initiatives. The NSAA has annual awards for sustainability, safety, marketing, and converting newcomers to lifelong skiers. The ski population remains majority white, affluent, and intermediate/expert skiers. Sadly, female participation is slightly declining, a trend we hope to see reversed as more and more resorts are led by women.

In this episode we meet Maureen Poshman founder of Promo Communications, a PR agency based in Aspen, Colorado that specializes in luxury travel and hospitality. Maureen and her family have lived in Aspen for many years and she shares her extensive knowledge of the area.Maureen’s agency works with Portillo, a fantastic ski resort in Chile, located a 2 hour drive from Santiago airport. Maureen tells us all about Portillo, which really does sound like a perfect family ski destination. Portillo is the oldest ski resort in South America, celebrating its 75th anniversary this season. Portillo offers an all-inclusive ski week package with lodging, meals, and lift tickets at the iconic yellow hotel surrounded by 15,000 ft peaks.
We talked about planning a family ski trip to Portillo, which would be during our North American summer.. The ski season runs from June/July through late September. Families will love the kids ski free weeks, childcare, hotel activities, and ski-in/ski-out convenience. Rates are around $4,000 per person for a week, that includes hotel, meals and lift tickets.

The survey reached out to 1,000 women to understand the challenges and barriers they face in the skiing community.Our goal is to identify issues and advocate for changes that make skiing more inclusive and enjoyable for families.Key Findings:
Affordable Lessons: A staggering 94% of respondents indicated they would ski or snowboard more often if affordable group lessons were available for their children.Breastfeeding Facilities: About 59% of moms reported difficulties finding a clean, quiet place to breastfeed at ski areas.On-Mountain Childcare: An overwhelming 87% of participants expressed that access to on-mountain childcare would encourage them to ski more.Industry Insights:
The survey revealed a significant gap in how the ski industry supports families:Only 44% of moms feel the industry cares about supporting families.A concerning 55% disagree that the industry is doing everything it can to support families.Call to Action:

As an organization, we decided that standing on the sidelines waiting for change simply wasn't an option. The Ski Moms are trying to remove the friction points that keep more families from the slopes. We've built a huge, supportive online community of women helping women to get out and play. Now we're providing the ski industry with the data they need to be agents of change.
In this week’s podcast, we talk to three more moms from our group about what’s working in the industry and what’s not. We’re grateful to Anne Lemon, Ashley Nevlings and Katherine Sanpere for sharing their stories.

In this episode we meet Peggy Shinn, a freelance writer and author with extensive experience covering ski racing, Olympic athletes, and winter sports. Peggy started skiing at a young age and ski raced through college. Peggy transitioned from technical writing to sports journalism, covering ski events for local papers and national publications. Peggy began working with the U.S. Olympic Committee in 2008, covering all Olympic sports on their website. We loved learning about the many Olympic Games Peggy has covered including Shaun White's gold medal performances.Peggy tells us about her book, World Class which dives into the teamwork culture behind the successful U.S. women's cross-country ski team. In this episode we meet Maria Baker, the founder of Nobody’s Princess, a size and shape inclusive brand of ski and snowboard pants for women. Maria started snowboarding with friends about 9 years ago (at age 30) and instantly fell in love with being on the snow.Right away, Maria struggled to find snow pants that fit her properly. She kept ripping them, squeezing into pants that did not fit well and felt uncomfortable. When covid impacted Maria’s job in travel, she saw it was the right time to launch Nobody’s Princess. After some researching and networking Maria used indigogo and kickstarter to launch her snow pants. Nobody’s Princess snow pants have sizing that includes different lengths (short, regular, tall) in sizes 2-20. The snow pants come in a variety of fun colors like aqua, violet and raspberry.
We loved learning about how Maria sourced real life women from her local Facebook group to model her pants.
Maria also tells us about the ski resorts in Australia, including Buller and Thredbo and her favorite apres ski snacks.
