Through Harper's journey from dismissive doctors to eventual fibromyalgia diagnosis, I explore how weight stigma, medical gaslighting, and inadequate pain management create layers of trauma for patients in marginalized bodies. I break down the science of fibromyalgia in accessible terms and explain how the nervous system's "volume control" for pain gets stuck on high.

You can't control your health any more than you can control the weather. In this episode, I explore how holding individuals responsibe for their health is a relatively recent phenomenon tied to capitalism and neoliberalism, contrasting it with historical perspectives where health was viewed as a collective responsibility. I talk about the benefits of moving from body control to body trust, while addressing systemic factors affecting health and the importance of building supportive communities.

In this powerful episode, I examine the critical intersection of fatness, chronic pain, and medical bias. Drawing from both my professional expertise as a doctor and my personal experience with frozen shoulder, I expose how the medical system frequently fails fat patients seeking pain management – not through lack of treatment options, but through prejudice and assumptions.

Health isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. It’s as diverse and dynamic as the people who experience it. In this episode, I challenge the narrow, static definitions of health and asks whether health is a basic human right or a privilege. A binary concept or a specturm. A journey or a destination.

The holidays can be a lot—especially if you’re juggling too many expectations, feeling the weight of others’ emotions, or just trying to keep it all together when everything feels like it’s falling apart. In this episode, I’m diving into how the holiday season can throw extra pressure on those of us who take on more than we should—whether that’s managing everyone else’s needs, pushing ourselves to meet impossible standards, or feeling disconnected and drained despite being surrounded by people.

A whole bunch of us were raised on the premise of an Amercian Dream, and it turns out we were all sold a lie. The harder we work, the less we own. As the average life expectancy reaches new heights, so too do health disaprities. No matter who we vote for, politicians have zero interest in doing the will of the people. And there's no justice to be found in the legal justice system. So now that we've woken up (some of us have been awake for a while now), what are we going to do about it?

It's amazing what some surgeons will say to get out of performing surgery. Which is weird, because they're supposed to like performing surgery. Otherwise why become a surgeon? In this episode, Asher explores one of life's many mysteries and also does a lot of ranting. What can he say? He's autistic and he doesn't have time for lies.

4 years ago, Asher failed his final diet. More accurately, the final diet failed him. 3 years ago, he came out as transmasculine. Two years ago, he uprooted his entire life and moved to Scotland. This time last year, he realised he was neurodivergent. In may 2020, he was writing a weight loss blog. A lot has happened since then, so he figured it was high time he re-introduced himself.

The other day, Cara messaged Asher to say:
"I've been slowly pushing my doctor to forget that I'm fat and there as been some growth. At my last appointment she was scheduling me for an MRI and there is a mandatory weight question. She told me about it upfront, said she would not weigh me but that she needed a number to put in there. She asked me what I thought she should write, I gave her the answer, and that was that. It felt like a win. It felt like I had taught her something and that she valued the lesson."
