It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Greg Stoker, co-host of the Colonial Outcasts podcast, to discuss the recent military operations by Israeli forces in Gaza. Then, she speaks with Hayden Clarkin, also known as the Transit Guy on Twitter, to discuss New York Governor Kathy Hochul's recent decision to delay congestion pricing. First, Emma runs through updates on reproductive care in the US, ceasefire negotiations, Israel’s continued siege on Gaza, Biden’s asylum ban, Ukraine-US relations, Oklahoma’s Supreme Court decision on reparations for the Tulsa Race Riots, Elon’s harassment allegations, and the crackdown of Argentina’s police state, also diving deeper into the Supreme Court’s recent dismissal of a challenge to Mifepristone, and when the other shoe will drop. Greg Stoker then joins, diving right into his military background, the major influence that working with “kinetic” Drone strikes under Obama (alongside the following decade of growth) had in awakening him to the indiscriminate violence of US imperialism. Shifting focus, Stoker looks to Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza, which has made the US military look nearly discriminate by contrast, walking through how Israel has eviscerated every central piece of infrastructure of Gaza society, and demonstrated a divide in the tactics of Western Imperialism and outright genocide. Expanding on this, Greg and Emma tackle the narrative around ongoing ceasefire negotiations, assessing why this conflict has largely been a success for Hamas and a failure for Israel, with no real end in sight for the occupier, also touching on Israel’s increasingly irrational violence towards other regional actors like Iran. Wrapping up the interview, Stoker touches on the US’ dwindling soft power, what that means in the context of their supposed foreign policy pivot to Asia, and what THAT means in the context of US support for Israel’s genocide. Hayden Clarkin then slowly walks Emma through the background for NY Gov. Hochul’s astounding recent decision to kill New York’s congestion pricing plan for Manhattan, with the policy already a long time coming at the time of NYC’s 2017 MTA state of emergency, when it was first put forward as a solution to issues of traffic and transit maintenance and upgrades, with its 2023 approval immediately seeing the launching of a thousand lawsuits from NY’s Jersey neighbors over its supposed cost, and ultimately leading to Hochul’s move. Expanding on this, Transit Guy assesses who this pricing plan would *actually* impact (some 1.5% of commuters into Manhattan), the myriad exemptions ironed in, and the wide array of transit-infrastructure-related projects it would fun, also touching on the statistics behind Manhattan’s ongoing traffic crisis. Wrapping up, Clarkin discusses the new lawsuit from NYC Comptroller Brad Lander over this killing of myriad major MTA projects, and the unsurprising financial influences behind this fiasco.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they listen to George Latimer struggle not to prove the point of a caller accusing him of “tokenizing” and “marginalizing” Black constituents who critique him, and unpack some car-spiracies. Robert in Manhattan on terror and the state, and Daniel in LA on housing policy. Jamaal Bowman’s upcoming primary in New York and AIPAC’s spending efforts against the Squad. First, Sam runs through updates on the UN’s ceasefire proposal, continuing carnage in Gaza, GOP primary results, the conviction of Hunter Biden, slowing inflation rates, the US' disregard for Leahy law, more Alito-family leaks, North Carolina’s mask ban, the permeation of microplastics, and Chiquita’s liability for paramilitary action in Columbia, before watching the GOP attempt to spin the Hunter Biden conviction as yet ANOTHER attack on Donald Trump. Judd Legum then joins, diving right into the story, originally broken by ProPublica a few years ago, of RealPage’s rent-pricing algorithm for landlords, and how the prevalent usage of RealPage in housing markets allows corporate landlords to eschew direct conspiracy yet reap all the benefits of collusion, from raised and fixed rents to artificial market constraints. After unpacking some of the finer elements of RealPage’s “property management” software, Legum looks to the development of multiple major lawsuits against RealPage, including class-action suits in Atlanta and DC, unpacks the evidence that has come through discovery, and tackles the FBI’s recent raid of a corporate landlord’s offices in a major development to a criminal anti-trust case against RealPage, before wrapping up with a brief assessment of landlord liability in a federal criminal case. Usamah Andrabi then joins, jumping right into the incredibly Manchin-esque campaign of conservative “Democrat” George Latimer, and how his AIPAC-funded run to unseat Jamaal Bowman has gone well beyond just unconditional support for Israel, with AIPAC’s pro-Trump funders pushing a full rejection of Bowman’s progressivism. After expanding on the astoundingly bigoted and anti-democratic campaign being run by Latimer, Andrabi and Sam tackle the need for Democrats to step up for their colleagues in the face of overwhelming amounts of right-wing money, and what to make of the recent Emerson poll showing a major gap between the two candidates, before touching on what those of us outside of New York can do to help.
And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks the sustained anti-PC delirium in comedy, aided by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ recent response to Seinfeld’s anti-woke ramblings, Brian from LA tackles the Daily Wire’s new animated show and the arrested development of right-wing humor, and Maryellen from Newark explores the sale of West Bank properties in the US. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma discuss the recent candidate forum between Rep. Jamaal Bowman & Westchester County Executive George Latimer, where Latimer made the claim that Rep. Bowman's constituencies were in Dearborn, Michigan and San Francisco, as opposed to the Bronx and Westchester. Then, they discuss the recent ceasefire resolution that passed through the United Nations (UN), and the strange, convoluted game of telephone that high ranking Biden administration officials like Secretary Blinken are playing when it comes to Hamas accepting a ceasefire deal (reports are that they've "said" they amenable to it) and Israel accepting a ceasefire deal (Netanyahu has not "said" that he's amenable to it; Blinken says it's the position of the Israeli government. They then react to some of the crime data coming from an FBI report, showing plummeting rates of violent crime, before getting into the bombshell undercover reporting by extraordinaire Lauren Windsor, who went undercover at a Supreme Court Historical Society event, speaking with Chief Justice Roberts (relatively normal), Justice Alito (more unhinged), and Justice Alito's, wife Martha Ann (the most insane conversation you'll ever hear).
And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew discuss JD Vance's coyness around his position in the Trump veepstakes, despite being asked for documents and...whether he's committed any crimes or things of that nature (and that would be disqualifying, somehow)? They then react to Georgia congressional primary candidate and Jan-6th related convict Chuck Hand being asked a simple question about agricultural policy at a debate before introducing himself, completely ignoring the question, and walking off the stage. They then check in on Tim Pool waging the war on Christmas in...June, Steven Crowder and Nigel Farage having an idiot contest, and the...interesting mentions under a tweet from the account "AFPost" regarding polling showing less U.S. Jewish voters supporting Trump in 2024 as opposed to 2020. The "AF" standing for...America First can probably give you a good idea of the tenor of the replies to this tweet. (Hint: they're insanely anti-Semitic). Plus, your calls & IM's!

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss the recent events from the weekend in Israel, Palestine, & foreign policy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Macron’s call for snap elections in France, Israel’s mass slaughter of Palestinians in the freeing of four hostages, UC’s academic worker strike, Biden’s newest Executive Order on immigration, Trump-Biden polling, social media, and Bob Menendez legal troubles, before diving into Marjorie Taylor Greene’s parallel between two people definitely criminally convicted by federal governments, Donald Trump and Jesus Christ. Matt Duss then joins, diving right into Biden’s recent decision to overshadow Trump’s conviction with an announcement of supposed ongoing ceasefire negotiations of Israel’s design, and how these talks inevitably fell into the same pattern of Netanyahu taking drastic action to prove bad faith to push Palestinian actors to kill the deal, unpacking why Biden is so scared of actually holding Israel to account, and touching on the major impact the continuation of this conflict is having on the already-precarious standing of US legitimacy in the Middle East. Returning to the ceasefire document, Duss walks through the important step toward peace this proposal represents, with contents that would actually require Biden (and others) to confront the Israeli government’s illegal occupation and the future of Palestinian statehood, before shifting to a brief conversation on domestic politics in Israel, from public opinion on the war to the power of Netanyahu’s far-right coalition, and touch on the recent Nuseirat Massacre and its further undermining of the humanitarian effort in Gaza. After reflecting on the Biden Administration’s failures with the Iran Nuclear Deal, Matt, Sam, and Emma wrap up with a brief assessment of the rising threat of fascism in Europe, and the slight containment of fascism in India.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the (minimal) coverage of Israel’s internment camp and the horrors faced by Palestinian detainees, Sean from Spain explores various organizing efforts, and Kenny from Berkeley expands on the UC school system’s attempt to use California’s conservative courts to break the backs of its academic workers. Seb Gorka and guest discuss how very relatable they (and Donald Trump) are to the working class and Don from New Jersey on escalating dissent against US support for genocide in Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s attack on a school shelter in Gaza, Israel’s obstruction to a ceasefire, Netanyahu’s turn to Hezbollah, Biden’s polling bump, Fani Willis’ major mishaps, Mondaire Jones’ conservative turn, abuse in Wisconsin prisons, NYC’s congestion pricing plan, and climate change, also parsing through Byron Donald’s attempt to “contextualize” his claim that Black families were stronger under Jim Crow. Professor Aviña then steps back, walking Emma through the major reforms AMLO achieved during his 6-year term, including major judicial, economic, and labor changes materially (and visually) improving the lives of a vast majority of working-class Mexicans, before tackling some of the major leftist critiques of his Administration, including its “reformist” take on neoliberalism, continued support for the war on drugs, militant border maintenance for the US, and a non-transparent infrastructure project on the Yucatan peninsula. Aviña also expands on the central role ALMO’s ability to be a strong negotiator in US-Mexico relations played in his success, before wrapping up with the major role Sheinbaum’s Administration can play in cementing the progress (and righting some wrongs) of Mexico’s major progress over the last 6 years. Dr. Dan Wilson then jumps right into some of the major problems with public discourse around vaccines, such as their majorly misunderstood purpose and risks, and how the poor public health communication and severe misinformation during COVID severely inflamed these issues. Dr. Wilson then walks Emma through some of the major players in the anti-vax crusade of the last few decades, including third-party presidential candidate and HIV-AIDS denier RFK, before wrapping up with a conversation on long-COVID and vaccinations.

Happy Monday! Sam & Emma speak with author and historian William Hogeland, proprietor of the “Hogeland’s Bad History” newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent book The Hamilton Scheme: An Epic Tale of Money and Power in the American Founding. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on México’s election of Claudia Sheinbaum, Israel’s rejection of what was supposedly their own peace proposal as they blast through Biden’s Rafah red line, Hunter Biden’s legal woes, Bibi’s joint congressional address, reactions to Trump’s conviction, Fauci’s testimony, the Affordable Connectivity Program, climate change, the IRS’ free tax-filing service, and Dinesh D’Souza’s publisher issues an apology for publishing Dinesh D’Souza, before diving into Biden’s absurd claim that Israel was the one pushing the ongoing peace negotiations with Hamas, and how Israel’s offensive is likely to continue as Biden’s “red lines” shift ever backward. William Hogeland then joins, first reflecting on the introduction of Alexander Hamilton into popular culture with the recent musical phenomena, and how that provides the opportunity to present a more three-dimensional view of Hamilton’s political philosophy and impact. Now, Hogeland steps back to the inception of the US, and the central role Hamilton played in establishing a financial system that centered on the use of national debt to leverage the economic ambitions of the capitalist class in favor of a nationalist project by allowing them massive ownership stakes, while additionally reinforcing the elitist and anti-democratic makeup of the political class that Hamilton desired. After expanding on Hamilton’s relationship to the US Constitution, including unpacking the relatively subdued role that the Federalist Papers played in the actual ratification, Hogeland walks Sam and Emma through the backlashed faced by the US Federal government due to Hamilton’s wildly anti-democratic financial scheme, looking to both Shays’ Rebellion in 1786 and the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791 as clear cut examples of a coherent dissent and attack on Hamilton’s system of debt and regressive taxation, demanding follow through on the demand of “no taxation without representation” that Americans had fought for, also briefly touching on the greater makeup of this pro-democracy labor movement led by folks with Herman Husband and Thomas Payne. Next, Hogeland looks back to the enemies Hamilton had inside of the US political structures, from State Sovereigntists during the framing of the Constitution, to the Jeffersonian attempts to undermine and overturn his financial system throughout the start of the 19th Century, before wrapping up with the redemption of Hamilton’s legacy over the last few decades, and the particular role his thought played in the US’ response to the 2008 Financial crisis.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch an American nurse reflect on the harrowing experience of treating burn victims in Rafah, and discuss the myriad resignations-in-protests by Biden State Department officials, with the most recent accusing the agency of actively lying about Israel’s role in blocking aid to Gaza. Kate Wagner then walks Emma through this ongoing problem of the corporate “Disney-fication” of our cities, with an increasing trend of corporations buying up entire neighborhoods for glorified (and extremely exclusive) publicity stunts. Tackling the examples of Bilbao’s Guggenheim and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Wager explores how these monstrosities exploit loopholes to essentially get the public to pay for the enclosure of their commons, before she and Emma wrap up with the central role that Private Equity and commercial real estate have played in promoting this process.

First, Emma runs through updates on Nikki Haley’s endorsement of Donald Trump, Israel’s continued victimization in the face of committing genocide, US support for Israel, Senate politics, Justice Alito, Anti-trust action, UK elections, and more, before parsing through Fox News’ coverage of the FBI’s capacity to USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST DONALD TRUMP, per typical procedure. Professor Daniel Galvin then joins, first contextualizing what these “alternative labor” organizations are, with networks like worker centers, community organizations, and regional alliances providing particularly vulnerable workers in the vast, unionized sectors of the US economy an avenue for workplace and labor justice, be it wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, or labor conditions, though generally focusing on rectifying wrongs that have already occurred. Expanding on this, Professor Galvin explores how these organizations have begun shifting to a more proactive approach, advocating for state and local employment and labor policy to chip away at the severe power imbalance in the US economy, finding success in bluer districts and states, while meeting much more institutional (and financial) opposition elsewhere. After walking through the slow and steady undermining of FDR’s New Deal system of labor protections after the Second World War, and the shift away from collective bargaining to minimal employment protections, Galvin wraps up by assessing the devastating impact employer exploitation like wage theft actually has on the US economy, resulting in billions taken from the lowest-wage workers. Richard Beck and Emma then reflect on Biden’s Foreign Policy platform on the campaign trail, centering a “foreign policy for the middle class” and a narrative of “Democracies versus Autocracies,” which particularly worked with his early policies of support for Ukraine and withdrawal from Afghanistan, respectively, and look to the main individuals – Anthony Blinken and Jake Sullivan – responsible for shaping this platform. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Sarah Jaffe, fellow at the Type Media Center based in New Orleans, to discuss her recent piece for In These Times entitled “In Tough Loss, the High-Profile UAW Campaign at Mercedes-Benz in Alabama Falls Short.” Then, Sam checks in on some news stories he’s been interested in! First, he runs through updates on the trickling of recognition for a Palestinian state from European nations, Biden’s all-out assault on the International Rules-Based Order as he and the GOP begin work on sanctioning The Hague, yesterday’s major primaries, the US economy, abortion politics, student loans, the occupation of Haiti, and unionization, before parsing through Trump’s continuing double-talk about abortion regulation, and Biden’s horrid choice to go after the ICC. Sarah Jaffe then walks Sam through the numbers coming out of the failed unionization vote at Mercedes’ Alabama plant, before painting a picture of Mercedes’ standard union-busting effort, and the role of the South’s anti-union culture in keeping the organizers just a few hundred votes short. Expanding on this, Jaffe touches on the ongoing national union renaissance, and how it has (however minimally) impacted the South, before stepping back to assess where the organizing effort failed – namely in failing to inoculate the workforce to the myths union-busters rely on – and the plant-specific factors that prohibited a greater organizing effort. After they wrap up the interview by looking at the major lessons to take from this loss, Sam dives deep into the sentencing of Charles Littlejohn, and how the state’s protection of the wealth of the Uber-elite has defined the US’ economic failure coming out of the Great Compression.

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. But first, they speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss some of the recent developments at the Supreme Court. First, they run through updates on Biden’s criticism of the ICC’s Israeli arrest warrants (as well as the important ICC support coming out of Europe), the aid that still hasn’t gotten to Gaza, Israel’s regime of repression, today’s US primaries, California’s special election, Nevada’s abortion referendum, Truth Social, and the FBI’s Eric Adams investigation, before parsing through the initial reporting on the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas officials. Mark Joseph Stern then joins, diving right into the impending milestone of the Biden Administration’s 200th successful federal judicial nomination, and the importance of moving away from the corporate judges of the Obama Administration, towards candidates that will have greater longevity in the system. Next, Mark, Sam, and Emma shift to the ongoing legal attack on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as the US Right followed the initial Supreme Court undercutting of it in 2020 with an audacious plan to make the entire Bureau (and many other major federal agencies) unconstitutional due to their funding coming from the Federal Reserve, walking through why the Right can funnel even the most absurd legal cases through the court of appeals due to the insane biases of the 5th Circuit and single-judge divisions killing random assignment, even if (as in this case) it has no chance at the Supreme Court. Expanding on this, Stern parses through how the 5th Circuit serves as an “audition” spot for future conservative Supreme Court justices, before looking to Louisiana’s conservative judges’ active attempt to undercut the restructuring of Louisiana’s congressional districts, and why the Supreme Court is holding firm on not allowing major changes (like this reversion) in the months before an election. Wrapping up, Mark, Sam, and Emma tackle the continuing revelations around the Court’s major corruption – from judicial support of January 6th to shady financial ties – and what Congress can do to push back
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the few Israelis standing up to the IDF and Israeli thugs attacking aid due for Gaza, Byron Donalds calls for drug testing Biden, and Holland from Phoenix dives into border fear-mongering. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Tracie McMillan, editor at Capitol & Main covering worker organizing, to discuss her recent book The White Bonus: Five Families and the Cash Value of Racism in America. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Benny Gantz’s split with Netanyahu over Israel’s war strategy, the death of multiple Iranian officials, Julian Assange’s right to appeal extradition, Michael Cohen’s testimony, Justice Alito’s partisanship, gun control in the US, Giuliani’s legal woes, and Disneyland unionization, before parsing through the ICC’s recent issuing of warrants for various Israeli and Hamas leaders and officials, such as Bibi Netanyahu and Yahya Sinwar. Tracie McMillan then joins, as she dives right into this idea of a “White bonus,” and how centuries of institutionalized White Supremacy in the US – even if largely reformed today – created lasting biases that privilege White folks without explicit (or socially-recognized) benefits based on race. After stepping back to explore how her personal experience exposed her to these concepts, seeing the benefit of the doubt she, as a White woman, was consistently given in an employment context, McMillan, Sam, and Emma explore where these “submerged” benefits lie, such as the tax breaks and employment opportunities offered to middle and upper-class families that have privileged from generations of White Supremacy, and how they shone through even in McMillan’s non-elite upbringing. Next, McMillan walks us through the examples she uses in her work, tackling how the ingrained “white bonus” of society helped bolster the upbringing of various middle-class Mississippi white kids, providing them pathways to social mobility and rescuing them from the trappings of the carceral state in ways Black kids would not be privy to, before wrapping up by reflecting on the need to emphasize widespread solidarity in the battle for material rectification, particularly in the US where racism continues to be a central inhibitor to social programs.
