  • Workplace stress, resilience, psychological safety… These are all buzzwords that have gained increasing attention in recent years. And rightly so. We spend a huge proportion of our time at the workplace, so it’s critical that we do our best to keep stress to a minimum.

But who is actually responsible for this? Our guest on the podcast this week says the burden of responsibility is shared, and proposes meditation as a solution that can have a huge impact on stress, not just from within the workplace, but also the stresses that naturally make their way into the workplace from “outside.”

Brett Jarman is a Vedic Meditation teacher, and has practised the technique every day, without exception, for more than 33 years. (We, Jan and Michelle, have also been practising the technique for the same period of time).

As a business consultant, mentor, and business mastermind group facilitator, Brett’s also well versed in the impacts of stress in the workplace.

He is also Jan’s husband 🙂, and is very active behind the scenes in our business, so is very familiar with the world of leaders and managers.

He says meditation, and Vedic Meditation in particular, is not just a personal pursuit; it’s a transformative tool that can profoundly benefit the workplace environment.

  • As a leader it can be tempting to point to team members as being responsible for team performance issues. Sometimes this is the case, but more often than not, we see a failure on the part of the leader to take different personality styles and preferences into account.

This is actually the primary job of a leader, and what sets leadership responsibilities apart from individual contributor responsibilities, so in this episode, we delve into how your personality profoundly impacts your leadership style and effectiveness.

  • The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has been our favourite personality profiling tool since we first became accredited facilitators more than 20 years ago.

Other profiling tools have come and gone as ‘flavour of the month’ over the years, many of which are simplified versions of the MBTI, but the MBTI itself is the tool we are most often asked to use, and with very good reason,

The wisdom behind it is timeless and the applications endless, and no matter how many times we deliver our MBTI workshops, they never fail to deliver life-changing insights to course participants.

But how many organisations or participants get value from their MBTI profiles on an ongoing basis? How many people or teams review their profile regularly for insights as their career or organisation progresses?

Most people give their MBTI profile consideration based on their circumstances at the time they took their test, but as circumstances change, e.g. a promotion happens, new team members arrive, the demands on the team change, etc, they might only give a fleeting thought to their MBTI profile (if at all), and how that might be relevant to the change,

In this episode, we explore ways in which you can squeeze more value out of your team’s MBTI profiles in the months and years after first having the profiles done. With very little effort, and with big rewards, the MBTI can be the ‘gift that keeps on giving’ to you and your team.

    Episode Highlights:

02:00 Exploring the Value of MBTI in Teams05:01 Utilizing MBTI for Individual and Team Development09:14 MBTI's Role in Organisational Dynamics11:50 Diving Deeper with Myers Briggs Step Two16:51 Leveraging the Myers Briggs Team Report18:29 The Universality and Practicality of Myers Briggs19:16 Encouragement to Engage with MBTI

  • In 2014 we began working with Ian Perkins, CEO of lawlab, which, at the time, was a small and growing conveyancing firm.

We’ve worked with him every year since, and have helped him expand the business to 50 staff nationwide. Ian was kind enough to jump on a call with me to discuss their growth, and the role People Leaders has had in building his team over the years.

We discussed the focus on team leadership, cultural change, and the importance of staff retention and effective leadership.

We hope it gives you some insights into what might be possible if we were to work with you and your team. Whether you have two staff, two hundred staff, or two thousand staff, the principles that we apply are universal, and we’d love the opportunity to discuss what your needs might be.

  • Our focus for this year for our content is going to be small and medium sized organisations (SMEs), specifically, how to create high-performing teams. We're also creating programs that cater for SMEs. Watch this space for details...

There is a very different dynamic for small and medium businesses than there is with larger organisations, particularly when the owner is the leader of the business. Often these owners are what we would call "accidental leaders," meaning they didn't specifically set out to become a people leader as such, but it's come about as a natural consequence of the success of their business.

They can, of course, still be outstanding leaders, but can sometimes need a bit of extra help, particularly when it comes to creating their own leadership team, and developing a culture that doesn't revolve around the owner making all the decisions.

So, as you can imagine, we'll have a lot to talk about, and have kicked it off already with our first podcast episode: Elevating Team Engagement and Performance for Small to Medium Businesses

As we delve deeper into the conversation, Jo references John Maxwell's insights into breaking destructive habits and understanding the mind-body connection. We explore the surprising effects of overwork on performance, the role of dopamine hits, and why it’s important to step off the work-reward treadmill.

You’ll be fascinated as we dig into strategies to support team wellbeing by understanding their individual profiles and body types.

  • Today’s topic of choice is one we have found people leaders really struggle with, and can really open up so many opportunities for them: delegation.

In coaching or workshops, we often hear managers say, "Yes, but I'm so busy, surely I can't push any more work down on to the people that report to me." Our answer is simply, “Ask, you might be surprised by the response”.If it's the right kind of work and is something your team is interested in or think it may help with their growth and development, they’ll likely say yes. Rarely do people say no, so managers shouldn’t use that as an excuse.

It's important not to assume, especially as a people leader, because there are so many benefits of delegating.

    Episode Highlights:

The main reason managers don’t delegate - fear and a lack of trustLeading rather than managing - delegating tasks for development opportunitiesAccountability vs responsibility - understanding the difference when delegatingThe dos and don’ts - knowing which tasks are OK to delegate to others and which tasks should be always done by youHow to decide what to delegate and who to assign the task toThe 5 questions to ask when preparing to delegate: a suitability indexUsing our delegating template
