The Port au Prince was a privateer built in 1790 in France. Seized by the British off the coast of Haiti and renamed the Port Au Prince, it was originally involved in the transporting of slaves between Africa and the New World. In 1805, it was bought by a shipping magnate named Robert Bent and recommissioned as a whaling ship, but it also engaged in maritime warfare with Spain. The Port au Prince raided Spanish ships and colonies along the South American coast from Chile up to Central Mexico. So how did it end up all the way in the South Pacific in Tonga? And why is it sitting today on the bottom of sea in Ha'apai, Tonga? How is it connected to William Mariner?
