  • Today we’re joined by Jo, a Forensic Accountant turned Psychic Medium, sharing her four birth stories. Growing up in a family of eight, Jo was surrounded by babies, and hospital births were simply the norm. Her first birth experience was profoundly shaped by her mother-in-law’s illness and passing, which, unbeknownst to her at the time, would mark her initiation into the world of mediumship.

Today, Jo opens up about her hospital births, which she once saw as positive, yet were shaped by a cascade of interventions - inductions, episiotomies, NICU stays, and even an epidural injury. It was through the gift of mediumship and learning to trust her intuition that Jo realised all the wisdom she needed to guide her through her fourth pregnancy and birth was already within her. Jo's journey is a powerful reminder of the innate and sacred wisdom that we all carry within us.

  • If you need to hear a positive NICU breastfeeding story, this is it! Sarah shares her experience with premature prelabour rupture of membranes (PPROM) and the NICU journey that followed the birth of her baby at 32 weeks. She started antenatal expressing in labour and continued hand-expressing in the days after before switching to a hospital-grade pump. She had plenty of milk, triple-fed and used a nipple-shield alongside navigating an oversupply (she could pump 400ml in a single session!). She saw a variety of lactation consultants in the first few months and emphasises how important it is to find the right person for you who also has the right level of expertise for your situation.

  • This is a really lovely episode, where Agustina shares her two pregnancies and births, alongside her experiences as a Canadian living far away from her family. She opted for private obstetric care because she wanted extended follow-up care in the days after birth. She stayed really active in pregnancy, moved with the contractions and laboured relatively quickly, birthing both her babies with ease. Breastfeeding was a different story and if you’ve ever wondered exactly how profound and helpful a one-on-one session with a lactation consultant is, listen to Agustina’s experience - it speaks volumes!

Once a month she shoots maternity, newborn and family mini sessions in her cosy bedroom style studio in Brunswick East at affordable rates. Sessions are 20 minutes and they are a breeze. Hilary also offers shoots at home and around people’s neighbourhoods and she loves documenting families in their natural habitat. But if you don’t believe me, you can take a look at her work at www.hilarywalker.com.au and let her pictures speak for themselves. I have been lucky to have Hilary photographing our family all through my kids lives, but I also choose to have her photograph me for my business too. Professor Donna Geddes is the director of the Geddes Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group. Based in Perth, Australia, the group is made up of innovative and dedicated scientists and students that have a passion for developing measurements of lactation and breastfeeding and then applying them to make a difference to clinicians and breastfeeding families. The group makes a point of not only publishing their findings in scientific journals but spreading their information via free online articles and social media on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In.

Donna has a medical imaging background with an emphasis in ultrasound imaging. She has integrated this modality into many of the group’s studies providing a ‘window’ to different physiological processes during lactation. If you have listened to our previous podcast where I have spoken about the in quotes discovery of the breast anatomy - this is Donna! She showed the world the true anatomy of the lactating breast and could visualize how milk ejection occurs through her ultrasound techniques. Her findings have attracted much international attention and she is often requested to speak at both International and National Scientific Meetings. She is the Secretary for the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation.

    In this episode

    · the tools and technology we currently use and what we could be seeing in the future

    · using technology to identify if milk has come in or if there's inflammation in the breast

    · how to accurately test milk volumes

    · the controversial topic of test weighing

    · identifying lactation issues correctly- sucking and milk transfer and/or mil

In this episode Rachel and Katie dive into the fascinating topic of waterbirth (excuse the pun, but it was too good to leave out!).

I ask Rachel my burning questions and she stirs up the cauldron exploring everything from the history of waterbirth to the practicalities and the science behind it.

Listen in as we find out about:

    · When did women start birthing in water?

    · What does the research say about waterbirth improving outcomes?

    · Why are some women told they can’t get into the pool until they are 5 centimeters dilated?

    · Do water-born babies take longer to start breathing?

    · Guidelines recommend women get out of the pool to birth the placenta, but do they really need to?

    · And lastly, does waterbirth alter the baby’s microbiome?

So, place your order with the barista, pop your coat on, or press play as you get those headphones over your lugol’s, and let’s dive into the deep end of waterbirth.

Dr Nils Bergman calls himself a Public Health Physician, and currently promotes and researches skin-to- skin contact on a full time basis. He is a Research Associate at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Dr. Bergman was born in Sweden and raised in Zimbabwe, where he also later worked as a mission doctor. He received his medical degree (MB ChB) at the University of Cape Town, a Diploma in Child Health at Uppsala University, and later a Masters in Public Health at the University of the Western Cape. In this episode, Dr. Bergman delves into the critical importance of maintaining skin-to-skin contact throughout the first day of a newborn's life. He explains how this practice not only connects and wires the baby's brain but also has profound effects on the mother.

Dr. Bergman sheds light on the pivotal role of Oxytocin, often dubbed the 'love hormone,' which he eloquently describes as the hormone of resilience, vital for both mother and baby.

We further explore the crucial significance of focusing not only on the first 1000 days of a child's life but also on the first 1000 minutes. Dr. Bergman passionately explains how these early moments are foundational for long-term health and emotional resilience.

Additionally, we dive into the detailed work behind the latest version of the WHO Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) document. Dr. Bergman shares insights into the creation of this and introduces us to the concept of 'nurture-science.' He discusses how this emerg

Our guest, Kath Baquie is a mum of 3 young girls, a physiotherapist for women, and she also has an online community, FitNest Mama. Inside FitNest Mama, she helps to provide pregnant and new mothers with the exercises, support & resources they need to move from the overwhelm, the physical aches & pains of pregnancy, or the weakness felt before and after birth. And instead, she helps to replace that with the comfort & confidence they need to feel strong again inside out, so that they can get back to doing what they love, with a bubba by their side (whether or not that’s running around with the kids at the park, or running the next marathon).

In today's episode, Kath will guide us through the importance of being proactive about pelvic floor health, emphasizing prevention as being key. We'll also explore the benefits of exercise during pregnancy for a smoother postpartum recovery journey. We also dive into the benefits of perineal massage from a physio perspective.

  • In this week's podcast we are doing things a little differently and I am chatting with Lara Jezeph who openly shares her two birth stories. Hearing others birth stories is so powerful so I can't wait for you to listen to this ep!

Lara honestly shares about her two birth experiences, and more specifically her first traumatic birth through her local public hospital, and then her healing birth with her second baby with a private midwife. We chatted about the care providers she explored and then decided on for her second birth. Initially Lara was hoping for a homebirth but made the decision that a hospital birth would be best for her circumstances and set about creating a positive environment in hospital. We do discuss birth trauma, coercion and lack of consent so just a content warning that if you find these topics hard to listen to you may want to skip this episode.
